The Hospital Bag

Re: The Hospital Bag

  • Also, I’m totally that crazy lady that packed a long power strip since outlet space is minimal (and often in an inconvenient place) and I know DH and I will each have our phone and iPad at a minimum lol

    Me: 33 DH: 31
    Location: Castle Rock, CO
    DD: 10.13.18
    baby #2 due: 7.14.20

  • I did mine and baby's last weekend. I have a list on top of the last few things I'll need.
  •  With you @pumpkinpancake! Hoping to pack this weekend!
  • I was gonna put this off another couple of weeks, but maybe I should get on that? Will be 34w on Monday... :#
  • So... I bought a new duffel and last night threw a robe in there. Gotta get on it, but I’m only 33 weeks. I’ll feel more urgency at 35 I think...
  • I mostly finished mine but I have a few extra things to add. Kept it pretty minimal and simple- just a small backpack. We live a 10 minute walk from the hospital so H can get anything we left out if necessary.
  •  :D i am 35 wks tomorrow and have a list (on the computer at work) but that's about it.
  • @hannaht8516 I don't think the hospital will let you take your own meds, but maybe that's something @jennybean80can answer (not sure if it would be different in the US vs Canada either).  I think I remember reading somewhere that they have to give you everything you take.  I figured out after the fact that they were giving my colace haha.
  • @hannaht8516 I brought my SIL Colace (she gave birth three weeks before me last time) and I don't think anyone said anything, but she only stayed one night.  @KFrob may be right, but your duration of stay probably will determine if you get caught.  I snuck in snacks last time too...
  • @meltonjl i am all about snacks. never thought about sneaking them in though...my aunt is a provider in one of the clinics attached to our hospital and with every one of ours she has brought up piles of great food when she comes to visit. maybe they just pretend that dh is the only one eating it. or maybe it is because she always brings treats for the nurses, too.  ;)
  • @KFrob @meltonjl Oh, that's a good point. Didn't think about that. Oh well, they're in there if I need them. If not, I'll just keep them in the bag.
  • Mostly finished with mine since I pack pretty light. I still need a charger to put in there. I'll just buy another one because my kids keep breaking the chargers around here so I don't want to find out at the last minute none of the ones we have work well. I want to buy a blanket for baby that'll be warm enough for likely cold weather, and I still need a good nursing bra.
  • @HoosOnFirst I thought the same thing last time. "Surely by 35-36 weeks I'll be motivated." Ya, I packed while in labor literally right before we left for the hospital. :joy: I knew in my head what I wanted to pack before hand, so it was ok. I haven't done much more than think about what to put in my bag, and pick out baby girl's outfits (they do pictures in hospital). But I keep thinking maybe this time I should. Lol
  • Planning to do some shopping for my bag this weekend... I’m not in that big of a hurry but my husband is begging me to do it (I think someone’s a bit nervous lol)
  • Probably not the right thread, but a bagillion years ago I remember reading about Dermoplast and packing it in your hospital bag...is it the red cap or the blue cap one that is best?
  • @nikimelon I don’t know which one is best red vs blue, but I’d say you can skip that in the hospital bag, as the hospital gave it to me last time... not sure if all hospitals do, but I'm not taking anything with me that they will provide me with instead!
  • @meltonjl - Oh No!   Fingers crossed it is a false alarm.  If not, good luck!

Last night I asked my friend if there was anything she’d suggest that wouldn’t be on the million Pinterest lists I’ve found and she said bring an empty duffel bag and each day fill it up with all the free goodies... might as well stock up! I laughed but she’s probably right!
I did this last time and will do this time too! They make small duffels that collapse/fold into teeny tiny. I already threw one in my bag.
  • I'm not even planning to touch the bag until October. I don't want it sitting out because I guarantee the cat will claim it, or my DD will unload it  :D

  • @eireyes Can't you pack it and put it in the closet or something? Tell H to head it alone?
  • @nikimelon Blue cap! That's what the hospital gave and I had to to buy 2 more bottles after coming home because of all the stitches/tearing. Also you can call/tour the floor and ask what they supply. I know it was supplied for us

@HoosOnFirst That's funny. I went at 39 and 6 (according to their dates/his size). The bad thing is I had been in labor for 5 days, had been getting NSTs every other day for a couple weeks, AND went in that morning to be checked (they said come in if contractions got closer than they had been for the last 4/5 days. Silly me went in with out a bag! Lol) Thankfully they sent me home to labor more comfortably and I was able to quickly pack after my water broke a couple hours later. I remember rationally thinking I should have it packed in case I was admitted from an appointment or NST, but I just didn't do it. Lol
  • Yikes! I have my 34 week appt today and wondering if I should have brought my bag! Although it’s not packed so not even useful.

This might belong in the mental health thread but I’m having a ton of anxiety about going into labor early. Like asking my ob about whether I’m leaving amniotic fluid today. I don’t have a reason to suspect it’s anything but discharge but I’m just a mess this week. My poor Dh, I’m just crying all the time right now and my three year old saw it last night and was worried about her mama.

@Mylitta I could, but I'm barely 33w at this point, and I just don't need more crap on the floor. I've never been more than 4 hours early, and nothing in my house is sacred or safe from the tiny terrors (furry or otherwise) :D Even if I don't have it packed when I go into labor (assuming that I do start labor on my own like usual), it's not like I'll have to drop everything and rush to hospital or else, so I'll have time. Worst case it will give me something to focus on in the early stages.

Took my breastfeeding class Tuesday night and repacked my bag after they gave me some info haha. My friend who delivered at a different hospital recommended a bunch of stuff that my hospital apparently provides! So I took out nipple cream, dermaplast spray and witch hazel pads.

I also found a robe at Motherhood Maternity that's light (and warm but not too warm lol) in black, so I grabbed that up and added it to my bag.

The bag is now in my car, and have a list sitting on my nightstand of a few last-minute items for my husband to grab (easy stuff he can find like my ipad and glasses/case, which I left right next to the list haha).

I do want to make gifts for the nurses. How do people do that with regards to timing? I don't want to make cookies and then have them sit around for a week getting hard until I actually go into labor lol.

  • @HoosOnFirst You're not alone. I'm 34+6, on Tuesday my trip to L&D was because I thought i might be in premature labor (4 hours of braxton hicks that got to about 4-5 min apart). I know it's wearing on my poor husband too.
  • @sarahzett make the cookies and freeze them! :)
  • @sweetsweettooth good idea!
