Re: Weekly Questions 2/26 - 3/4

  • @nimmle if you feel like splurging on the. best. smelling. bump cream, the Mamma Mio Tummy Rub Butter feels sooooo amazing.  I don't think the extra $$ makes it any better at preventing stretch marks but it's just so luxurious.

  • @moguippy I also have no choice in hospital but I toured it with DD1 late 2nd trimester. Unfortunately it was also flu season so we couldn't visit the actual maternity floor--could only talk about it. My hospital is very strict with flu season and visitors. Like, I have to choose only 2 people max who are allowed to visit the entire time, no trading, and kids under a certain age aren't allowed. When it isn't flu season, then they are more lenient on visitors and young children.

  • @Kenya715 my first was a boy and I carried him low. I'm having a girl this time and carrying identical to how I carried my son I'm just smaller than I was at the same weeks with him. I will say at my anatomy scan at 21 weeks she preferred to stay incredibly low in the womb and that's where I feel her movements, she tends to always prefer to lay in my back compared to my son who was always right out front which may also be why my bump is smaller on comparison. I also have a very long torso which could play a big role in why my babies look low.

  • @kissableviv Thank you for that link! One of the hospitals does slightly better in lower rate of c-sections and episiotomies but slightly worse in high-risk... but as of now I'm not high risk.  I will definitely keep this in consideration.

@zande2016 I should have done that. DH even asked if I wanted to switch OBs in the beginning, but I've been going to mine for like 8 years so I was too lazy to find a new one even though I don't love her. The two hospitals she has rights at are great hospitals, they just aren't that close. I live in NJ so there are like at least 7 good hospitals within 45 minutes so I could have had my choice, but I don't want to switch at 20 weeks.  Meh, it will work out. I just have to find time to do the tours
  • @kissableviv the two hospitals in my area both declined to participate!

My OB currently only delivers at 1, but I think the other hospital is actually better now. Similar enough that it doesn't really matter though. My OB practice was actually being bought by the other hospital but it's currently on hold for monopoly reseans (the competing hospital doesn't employ OBs currently). I'm just basing my decision on where my Dr has rights come July.

  • nimmle- I’m 19 weeks (FTM) and already have white lines on my boobs and just popped my first purple stretch mark on my side.  :( My mom got them really bad so I’ve been oil-ing and lotion-ing twice a day since 12 weeks because I’m super paranoid.

I second asking your mom- its mainly inherited.  I was doing research and there are things you can do to minimize your chances of getting them (staying hydrated, taking warm- not hot showers, exfoliating 3x a week and staying lubed up!)

moguippy I’ve known since I got pregnant because my OB is affiliated with the hospital.  My OB still wants me to take a tour but not until 30 weeks.  But I think that’s because I already know I’m delivering there.

Maybe call both and ask when they recommend taking a tour/deciding?

  • @MrsMiller8588 I had the dry nipple flakiness, but it went away. I could literally peel skin off my nips!

@nimmle, with my first my stretch marks held out til the very end-I was so proud! lol. The sunburst of silver stretch marks around my belly button showed up around a month ago I think, but it did fade somewhat quickly after birth last time.
  • @Kenya715 my first was a boy and I carried him low. I'm having a girl this time and carrying identical to how I carried my son I'm just smaller than I was at the same weeks with him. This is me exactly almost exactly.  First was a boy and I carried him low.  This is a girl and she is also super low. My bump is smaller than this far along with my son. I'm tall and have a long torso as well.
  • So I have my glucose screening in 4 weeks at my next appointment, and my doctor gives the option of either drinking the sugary drink or declining and testing your blood sugar over several days by doing a finger prick & eating normally. Does anyone have experience with doing the finger prick and/or any thoughts around this? I feel like this question has been asked a few times - but maybe now that we're getting closer to the test people might have more opinions!
  • Not a question- but super excited the November 2018 board opened up!  We are all one month closer, woohoooo!!!!
  • @babygagnon2018 let the lurking begin!
  • @ckmb_knottie there is a part of me that is like, "Ugh I don't wanna put that sugar in me" and would love the option of taking my blood sugar multiple times over the course of a few days. Then there is the part of me that is like, I eat cupcakes for breakfast sometimes, so you know, who cares. And its over in a couple hours vs. having to remember to prick your finger all the time. So if I think about it honestly, I would still choose the drink over the finger pricks for the ease.
  • @SmashJam I'm the same way . At first I was going to monitor but I also don't want to wait too long to get results.
  • @ckmb_knottie - I didn't have the option last time - I did the drink but I'm a "just do the fast thing and get it over with" kind of gal.  I know one member, can't remember who, was talking about doing the multi-check finger prick because of known other medical things that a sugar spike like that would be really bad - like past gastric bipas, certain gastro stuff, etc.  For me, I'd do the drink again because I'd rather sit in the office for an hour answering work email on my phone than making sure i remember to do the daily checks for longer.

  • Wait so when is this GD test again? I can’t remember but i thought it was around 28 wks (closer to third tri). I’m due for my OB again in 3 wks (24 wks) and i wasn’t told anything yet. With my last OB i was given the nasty drink to take at home so i don’t waste time at the doctor.
  • I haven't gotten my drink for the GD test yet. Maybe at my next appointment? I'm not looking forward to it anyway. I failed the 1-hour test in my first pregnancy because I ate a PB & J for lunch (I couldn't wait) before doing the test and my blood sugar was juuuust over the threshold. I passed the 3-hour test just fine a couple weeks later. For #2 I passed the 1-hour test because I was more careful about what I ate that day, and I'm hoping I do the same this time around.

  • Just wondering what the significance is of the November boards opening. What does it all mean?

Does anyone else feel WAY behind? We haven't picked out a car seat yet, or a pediatrician (though we might just go with a local one and see how that works), or a day care, and I haven't even spoken to my boss yet about my ideas for a schedule after I am done with my leave. The nursery will eventually be taken care of, but I have no idea what she'll sleep in the first 4-6 months. I'm sure it'll all get done before she comes, and I know it'll all be fine. But does anyone else feel this way sometimes?

  • @supersara2 I'm in the same boat. My SIL is giving us a car seat so we have that covered, but I haven't even thought of a pediatrician. I have been looking at daycares, but that is because in my area you need to do it 9 months in advance or you are on a waiting list (and I have to go back to work so I can't be in that boat). I've toured 3 and looked online at a few more, but we still haven't found one we like. I have so far only told my boss I'll be out approx July to October, I really need to ask about coming back (I'm hoping working from home 1 day a week will be an option). The nursery hasn't even gotten thought about other than what room it will be. It still needs a floor and paint at the minimum. The list gets longer every time I think about what needs to get done lol
  • @wildtot I don't remember either but it was towards the late 20s I think?

@supersara2 No major significance just another month that came and went. I believe the new boards go up 8 months in advance at the start of each month, so today, March 1 the November BMB went up. Also I joined this BMB months ago when it was brand new and we were all in the super early stages. It's cool to see our BMB chugging along as we get closer and closer.

I'm behind in nursery stuff because that stuff isn't urgent. Work wise I wanted to let everyone know asap and I wanted to have my leave locked down. Also, good  day cares in my area fill up like a year in advance so I wouldn't risk not being able to get in to one I really wanted.

  • I feel pretty organized. My house is a mess of stuff but I'll get through it. My mom will be here a week before my due date so that will be great help with the last loads of laundry and things like that. We have all the classes booked, doula hired, and we'll be looking at a pediatrician next (we have a referral). I'm going to put down my name at two daycares but I'm not too worried because I think we are going the nanny route. My MIL can also move here for a few weeks to hold us over in case we need to wait for daycare or I can work from their home in Texas if it's just a matter of 2-3 weeks until we get the spot we want.

I am super busy though with finishing my prenatal yoga cert and , lol and behold, applying for citizenship! I am just grateful to be full of energy. Taking advantage of it while it lasts...
  • Add me to the list of "drink the drink and just get it over with".  I hate the idea of finger pricking and struggle to even remember to take my blood pressure daily at home.  Speaking of which, gotta go do that....
  • @wildtot I was told today that i'll take the glucose test at my next appointment, i'll be 25 weeks at that point.

  • I think I'd rather just do the drink. Although, It's very hard for me to force something down if I don't like it, so fingers crossed it isn't that bad. I hate needles of any kind, so I don't think I could electively prick myself a couple days in a row... and I would most likely forget!

  • supersara2 no significance... just means we are one month closer to delivery.  I joined super early in my pregnancy so each new board opening up just gets me more excited at our pregnancies moving along and getting to meet our little babes!!
  • I feel less alone now! I haven't even checked to see how far in advance I need to get on the day care's list. I should probably get on that soon. I'll try to book all the classes this weekend so I feel like I have that done. I'm usually organized and put-together, but I think part of me is thinking all of this will get done when it needs to.
  • @wildtot I'll be 25 weeks at my next appt, I think the test is normally btw 25-28 weeks so I'd be past the normal window if I waited until 29 wks.

@SmashJam @kissableviv I totally agree it would be way easier to just drink it, but I guess my only concern is what @flockofmoosen3 was saying - I don't want to get a bad result and he flagged "high risk" or something (I don't know if this happens) either because of a random thing I ate earlier or because I don't normally eat much sugar and the drink may be like a total sugar rush for me. @flockofmoosen3 did you only do the 2nd test because you failed the first? After you passed that one, was your Dr satisfied that there was no risk?
  • Curious if anyone has experience with a velamentous cord? Just found out I have one. The doc isn't concerned but is sending me to a specialist JIC. It doesn't appear to be going over my cervix at all.
  • @Lelo2006 I may or may not have a marginal cord insertion. During the anatomy scan they thought it was borderline between normal and marginal so I have another ultrasound in 2 weeks to check growth. According to the internet, velamentous seems to be a bit more concerning, but even then it just means more monitoring I think.
  • @wildtot my doctor also said next appt at 25w will be the glucose test.

@supersara2 I’m in the same club! We have literally not purchased anything, haven’t decided if we will sell our house and move (so who knows RE nursery!), don’t know my company maternity policy and haven’t even asked my mom if she might stay with us post birth to help out...do you feel better?
  • Stupid me forgot the doctor gave me folder with all the appointment info. Looks like i should get the drink at my 24 wk appointment and tested at 28 wks. Glad i won’t have to wait at the doctors office.
  • anyone else use breathe right strips? I normally use the target brand but they were out so I got the name brand and holy crap it feels like they are going to rip the skin off my nose every morning!! on the plus side these have lavendae in them so they smell amazing!

  • @lindsayleigh1989 do you use them for nasal congestion? I feel like my nose is always a little congested. I like the lavender touch!
  • @lindsayleigh1989 I just bought some! The store brand version. Haven’t used them yet but some nights I’m so congested even though there’s nothing to blow.

  • @kissableviv yes! my ob suggested them to help open the nasal passages at night. I didn't realize pregnancy can cause swelling in th nasal cavaties making it feel like congested. they help a ton and the lavendar is great !

  • @rachelsogo yay pregnancy rhinitis! it's inflamed vascular passages keeping you down more than mucus :(
@lindsayleigh1989 - my OB and primary told me to take Zyrtec at night. I get bad post nasal on top of the pregnancy nose and had 2 sinus infections the first month and a half of pregnancy.  It's helped, still have a major nose blow first thing in the morning though.

  • @lindsayleigh1989 I use to use the name brand when I was a teenager. I felt the same way! It seemed like my skin was going to peel off too, it was SO sticky... but it was almost like a weird guilty pleasure. It didn't really hurt, but it was hard to pull off. (totally weird I know) I'm not normal. lol

  • What do Braxton Hicks contractions feel like? I'm 21 weeks, 5 days, and I've been getting these weird sensations that sort of seem like round ligament pain, but they don't go away right away (if I shift position or drink water, that does help).

Also, is anyone dealing with restless leg syndrome at night? I just started getting this over the last few days. What helps most night is using a foam roller on my quads, hamstrings, and calves, but it doesn't always work. Anyone have any tips? It's driving me crazy, and I was sleeping so well this pregnancy up until this point....
  • @pretzellover Thank you for empathizing! I have no idea if my mom plans on staying. We're in this together! I know it'll all be fine.

  • @sm05-2 Part of your abdomen gets tight for a few seconds. For me the location tends to shift, but it’s never the full belly. I feel a bit winded as well (having to breath or concentrate through them).
  • @lindsayleigh1989 definitely trying them! @sm05-2 I get restless leg syndrome but it's not as bad. I just try to ignore it. It's not keeping me up thankfully, these days it's a miracle if I make it through 10pm lol
