Ok, because people were talking about changing pads I wanted to bring mine up because I love it. It's plastic, so I never have anything to wash anything, I litterally just wipe it down with some cleaning stuff and im good to go. While it seems expensive, after you end up buying the covers and accessories for a cheaper one I think it evens out.

I have been looking at this one! Two questions: is it cold on the baby's butt and does it get stained over time from acidic poop? Or do you lay a washcloth or anything down on it?

  • @legallykate We haven't had any staining issues and mine is tan, but I have heard of other people having this issue. I think maybe it helps that we clean it up right away.

It's always about room temp so if the room is cold, it will be too. Other than that you should be fine.
  • FTM question. Has anyone ever made a registry for a store that they have no intention of actually using or letting people know about just to get a discount on one or two items? There is a crib blanket and sheet set on Land of Nod that I really really want and it is kinda pricey. Could I register and just wait and get a discount? Or is that a total cheapass thing to do?
  • I feel like a weirdo because DS2 was rarely ever changed on anything other than a couch or the floor. We had a little caddy that had the changing pad, wipes, diapers, rash cream, aquaphor, and pacifiers that we kept on each level and just threw the pad down and changed him wherever we were. It was so much easier than going to a designated location each time. Poor second kid.

  • @Brezzy1928 I made my amazon and target registries so I could use the completion discounts. I’m not having a shower or sprinkle or anything for this baby, but I still have a few larger items to replace. If I don’t find good sales before July, I’ll order the stuff using the discounts.

We always flush the poop. With cloth that’s the norm, but we plop it out of disposables, too. Way easier.

  • Here’s my bare-bones registry list for minimalists. These are the things I got and actually used when DS was born and the first 6 months or so. We lived in a small city apartment at the time. For reference I breastfed and went back to work at 12 weeks.

pack’n’play with built-in changing table, bassinet, and newborn napper
    sheets for pack’n’play
    infant bucket car seat
stroller with adapter for car seat
    infant bathtub
    Soft structured carrier
    bouncer
    play mat
    Burp cloths
    muslin swaddles
    changing pad liners
    Boppy pillow
    mothers love nipple cream
    nursing pads
pumping supplies and milk storage bags
    audio only monitor
    diaper pail
    high chair/booster seat combo
Skip hop portable diaper changing kit
    aquaphor, triple paste, baby wash/shampoo

things I didn’t buy a lot of until I knew what my needs/DS’s preferences would be:
    diapers and wipes
    bottles
    pacifiers
    clothes
    nursing bras and clothes

things I got and never/rarely used:
    Ring sling and K’tan carrier
rock n play (was redundant with newborn napper and DS didn’t like the rocking function)
    swaddles w/ Velcro, zips, etc.
    nursing cover
    baby washcloths and towel
thicker quilted or knitted blankets (one or two are good, but enough)
    baby shoes
    nose Frida

  • I haven't read most of this thread because I'm tired, but this is a list I compiled for friends who have been pregnant since DS, of my absolute favorite baby products.

    - Aden & Anais burpy bibs - can be used as a burp cloth or a bib, and they're THE BEST!! Just get them. A bunch of them. You won't be sorry.

    - Muslin swaddle blankets - can be used for everything (swaddle, burp cloth, blanket on the floor, stroller blanket...) in all weather

    - Tula baby carrier and infant insert (or grow with me Tula)- seriously just get them. So good.

    - Nosefrida snot sucker - sounds disgusting but works like a charm!

    - Oogiebear booger picker - works perfectly for the crusty boogers that the nosefrida doesn't get.

    - Boon grass drying rack - cute and very handy for everything - pacifiers, bottles, teethers, etc.

    - Kiinde breastmilk bags and bottle warmer - if you need to pump at all, this system is awesome. Make sure to check that the bottle warmer (if you don't get this one) is made specifically for heating breastmilk!

    - Lily Jade diaper bag - I think I bought 8 different diaper bags in DS's first 2 years. Finally I bought the Lily Jade, which is what I originally wanted. Just do it. It's worth the price!!

    - Silicone teething necklaces - there are some great ones on Amazon that are cute as well as great for teething babies

    - Halo sleep sacks - loose blankets aren't safe in cribs, so we swear by these. Available in both fleece and cotton, and I suggest one of each so you can adjust based on the temperature and what material pjs the baby is wearing.

    - Halo bassinest - such a convenient bassinet that swivels so it's easy for you to pick up baby without getting out of bed. Especially convenient if you're a c-section mom.

    - Earth mama angel baby nipple butter - this stuff is the freaking best. Doesn't stain your bras, not a weird texture, it actually works, doesn't taste bad, and I've used it as lip balm because it's just that good

  • Lots of great must haves mentioned already I will add a few of mine most used

*My Breast Friend BF Pillow- I wore this thing so much it become like an extra appendage
*Tommee Tippee microwave bottle sanitizer- used multiple times a day held up great
*JJ Cole changing clutch- seriously love this thing (still use it today)
*Wipes Warmer (still use it) I noticed immediately the screaming during changes improved significantly
*Hospital grade breast pump- Rented mine from BRU and loved it. Much quieter and more efficient then the smaller models. Downside- not very portable its a beast.
    * Gripe Water
*The baby Shusher soother- worth every penny. Learned of this one from LO's newborn photographer. Also the Homedics heart beat sound machine- LIFE SAVER!
*Dr. Browns formula mixing pitcher- no more air bubbles or shaking/ swirling bottles.
    * Aveeno Baby Eczema lotion is the best stuff on the planet for my LO. Keeps her breakouts in checks

    Things I learned

*Wish the glider I bought was something I could actually sleep in if absolutely necessary, would definitely buy a different one now looking back. Maybe more of a laZy boy style. Not as cute but much more functional
*Wish I would have used a backpack diaper bag right from the get go.
    * Halo sleep EARLY WALKER- style- Can't live without, use it nightly. Wish I had one sooner.
    * Temporal thermometer- What a joke. Returned for  a rectal one and honestly its not as scary as it sounds and is much more accurate.

  • We’ll be doing a registry again just for the completion codes and for grandparents etc if they ask—I won’t volunteer the info. It’ll be Amazon and Target which we used last time, although I’m not opposed to opening ones at other places just for myself if I find things I need/want so I can get a discount. No shame.

We never wanted to take DS back upstairs to change him so we just had a changing pad for the kitchen table and living room floor. Took up the least amount of space.
  • I can’t remember if we have a deals thread already? Lightning deal on Amazon: forehead thermometer down from 69.99 to 16.99

  • This is so helpful guys! I want to get a list going and show my friends for advice before I put a registry together. Thank you from a FTM!
  • This is such a tough one! Everyone is so different in their preferences and needs.

I highly recommend registries for the reasons others have listed. Additionally, Babies R Us has a 1 year return policy on any items purchased off the registry. It’s fantastic if you buy something that you realize that you won’t use after LO arrives.

    My top picks-
PNP- DS stayed in my bedroom until he was a few weeks old and slept/diaper & outfit changed in it.

sleep sacks- DS hated being swaddled with his arms in and this was an option with the sleep sacks and gave us peace of mind that he couldn’t break out of them like the swaddle blankets

Extra pumping parts (4-5 sets total) and pumping bras- DS was unable to successfully latch, so I EPed for nearly 12 months. Numerous extra parts meant fewer washes per day and maintained my sanity. Some ladies swear by refrigerating parts instead to save on washes, but I hated feeling cold plastic and milk residue on my breasts while pumping

Changing pad- I LOVED the changing pad!!!! It kept DS comfy during changes and I didn’t have to worry about pee or poo getting everywhere. I didn’t have a changing table though- just held on to it on top of the dresser

good stroller- I wouldn’t go super fancy, but if your stroller can’t handle a little rough terrain (like grass or turf to get to the playground) it might get a bit frustrating

ninja or other high quality food processer- we made all our own purees and a high quality processer was essential. I still use it frequently to make smoothies/protein shakes/ puree ingredients down for recipies/etc.

    Things I didn’t use
boppie- it didn’t do anything for me
Bumbo- Ped recommended it to help DS build core muscels to sit up. He hated it and learned to sit on his own without it
burp cloths/bibs- DS didn’t projectile burp and the bibs didn’t do much to keep clothes from getting dirty so they seemed pointless
Baby carriers- we went our our local babywearers group for help in finding one for DS but he cried incessantly in all of them. Clearly not his cup of tea.

  • This seems like the best place to ask, while shopping at Walgreens today the cashier told me I need to spend like 50k of my points I've accumulated before the end of the month before they expire. Instead of splurging on things I don't really need I was hoping to stock up on baby things I will need.

I was hoping to try out cloth diapering, because the sheer amount of waste with disposables really bothers me, we recycle virtually everything we can already. I'm sure I'll use disposable for some things, so I could get a few different sizes. But other than stocking up on disposable diapers and wipes, is there anything else useful that I'll need tons of that wouldn't expire before my due date? Otherwise I was thinking of getting formula and donating it to my doctor's office who gives it to new mom's in need.
  • @neeraja_k you will definitely need some kind of desitin, Vaseline, aquaphor. I recommend buying multiples of each of those. I don’t cloth diaper so I’m not sure what your plans are for wipes, but you could get some wipes too. And I also recommend booger wipes, if they sell those there. (Not sure, I got mine on amazon.)You could pick up some baby shampoo and lotion too. Not sure how quickly it expires, but I’d look at the gripe water and Tylenol too.
  • Saline nasal spray is a good thing to have, too.

  • I have a question about the Amazon registry: I signed up for everything I can think of that I want, but it says I am only 27% done. Is there a minimum value requirement for the welcome box? I don't want to register for a bunch of random stuff I don't need.

@derbysquirrel IIRC, I had to add something to every category, and then purchase something off of there of $10 or more I think it was, I got some wipes because I use them myself, and then I could get the Welcome Box (after they were back in stock).

ETA: I made my registry private so no one else could ever hope to see it, and I think you can change/remove things if down the road you decide you want to go a different direction.
  • @derbysquirrel I was told that you just had to check off all the categories on the checklist but didn't actually have to select items in every category. And then of course spend at least $10. Not sure how accurate that is, but that was my plan.
  • @derbysquirrel just go to the list and check it off as done.  It doesn't actually have to be added.

@neeraja_k infant Tylenol may have a long enough shelf life to last through the first six months.  Baby shampoo/lotion? I cloth diaper and wipe but still use plenty of disposable wipes.  Saline nasal spray, a nasal aspirator, rectal thermometer.  I bet all that stuff is at the pharmacy.  Toddler tooth brush.

I have a nose freida, another one similar, and then a neilmed curved bulb aspirator.  Definitely check out the neilmed one, I love that thing and choose it over the freida.

Also, I promise promise promise, pigeon nail scissors are AMAZING.  The blade is so small, I never ever worry about cutting skin when cutting nails.  Even on a squirmy toddler.  The blades are less than half an inch long.  Available on Amazon.
  • These.  I see no reason to buy the ones that say 3 months and up.  Really, I would say this is my number one recommendation that none of my friends have.  Then when I show them or let them try them they love them!

    mobile bumper, sorry :)
  • I just use manicure scissors I bought at the dollar store. Idk why anyone uses nail clippers on a baby/toddler. The scissors are so much easier!

@derbysquirrel I had to add something from every category to be eligible for the welcome box. Then I made a $10 purchase (kid shampoo for DS) and ordered the welcome box. Then deleted all the stuff I didn’t want or already had.

I have to say, I’d heard awesome things about the Amazon Welcome box, and mine wasn’t that great. A few diaper samples, a few wipes samples, and that was pretty much it. I got a completely free welcome box from Babylist, which I use to keep track of my cloth diaper websites, and it was much nicer - I got a Kiinde starter kit, diaper & wipes samples, several travel sized baby Cetaphil samples, a tube of lansinoh, a Pampers welcome kit.
  • My Amazon welcome box wasn’t bad, pic in spoiler. I heard good things about the Target one but now I’m off to baby list lol! Thanks @melprop !

  • On the nail clipper topic, I couldn’t find a pair I was comfortable with. I did have manicure cuticle clippers already though so I gave them a try and they’re incredible and sooo precise. We still use those and not real nail clippers.
  • @lolog531 I had to add 3 things from their store and 3 things from other websites. That’s it!
  • My Amazon was similar minus the pack of diapers.  Damn! I would have loved the diapers! Oh wait, it gave us a full size pack of  Huggies wipes instead.  Idon't need any more muslin swaddles so I was kind of bummed that that was the biggest swag.  I like the Target bag because it always has the pacis we use, and mustela products which I love and keep for our trips.  I'm going to check out babylist! I'd love a kiinde starter set! Where I'm going to get my pump from apparently sends great swag, to include full kiinde sets!
  • My Amazon box was pretty similar to @mrsbubbles-2, but I didn't get a full pack of diapers either. I got a lot of 7th Generation and Honest Company samples though iirc. I re-boxed and re-taped it for now and set it aside. heh
  • I would really suggest trying to borrow as many baby items as possible, instead of registering for them (swing, rock-n-play, bassinet, etc)!  They take up so much space and you really only use them for a short time!  It's pretty awesome to be able to give them back once you're done- less clutter!

Also, don't register for clothes!  You'll get looooots of clothes anyway, so keep the registry for necessities!

  • Ditto on everything @Funnygirl34 said. Also check local buy/sell/trade FB groups for baby gear. I’ve been able to buy nice toddler & little kid stuff, then resell it for what I paid when DS was done using it. I always see baby gear - swings, strollers, large toys, etc for sale in my BST. Also check independent consignment shops and secondhand baby stores. I haven’t checked out the one in the next town over, but their FB page suggests they sell excellent condition used baby gear & clothes for 50-75% off retail prices.
  • @mrsbubbles-2 you got a Muslim swaddle in your Amazon box?!?! Damn, score!!! Mine was not anything close to that... a bunch of small samples about 3/4 of which I threw away. The only decent item I recall was an Avent bottle, but DS rejected that type anyway (it was helpful to find out from a freebie though!)

  • I was hoping at least for a bottle or pacifier in the Amazon box since I threw away DS’s bottles years ago. But my box was just a bunch of samples and Amazon-only coupon codes. Literally everything in it fit into the little Pampers zippered sample bag. I know I shouldn’t be disappointed since it was technically free, but I paid more for DS’s shampoo on Amazon in order to get the baby box because I’d heard such good things about it. Total letdown.
