@ohmotherofboys my ILs are like that too! All DHs cousins (much younger) have nicknames. Olivia (Libby), Ella (Ellie bellie) etc. When our oldest was born we named him Declan. They literally all asked if we were plannning in calling him “Decky”. Um, no. We call him Declan. Because that’s his name.
mrsgrifbach loooove Nora. Its classy and sophisticated and it is definitely making a come back. My DD is Eleanor and goes by Elle or Ellie but when choosing it I liked the option for Nora as a nickname.
@kiwi2628 Henry is a good choice and one of my front runners! Love the pairing of Arthur for a middle name.

DHs family all have nn's that have NOTHING to do with their names.. Leslie is Sissy, Brian is Nunie (pronounced new-nee) Tyler is Eddy, Christopher is Moepickle, and Samantha is Lulu... and our niece Kaydence is Bean lol I like those kind of nicknames way more because they usually have a story to them I don't like shortening names for nicknames that's so common lol
@mrsgrifbach Nora was our #1 also if it's a girl. it's pretty underused where we live (South Florida), idk how yours is. My family has already been making jokes about it (my sister keeps referring to the baby as Norma) but it hasn't deterred us lol. I say go for it, it's beautiful.
I'm so bad about shortening names. My siblings and I all have 3 syllable names. We all go by shortend names. Marianne (Mari or Mar) Rebecca (Becky or Becs) Alexander (Alex or Al)
in the past 2 years my friends have named their various kids Ella, Ellie, Eloise & Elliot. I seriously can't keep track anymore haha I get them all mixed up!! I am going to do my very best to stay clear of any names that begin with 'EL'
Speaking of Ella and Ellies...any thoughts on the name Ellery for a girl? Historically it's a boy's name, but hey, Hillary used to be a guy's name, too. I'm really starting to dig it but not sure if I'll get a ton of weird looks. It means 'joy' and there apparently is a pirate legend about a girl named Ellery somewhere, too. And if my daughter can be a pirate, she should TOTALLY be a pirate (but in the daydream imagination kind of way...)
@chopchop25 I really like Ellery. I've never heard it before, its different but not too crazy out there. We are currently really liking Bellamy for a girl, which is also more commonly known as a boy's name. Especially now with the show 'The 100' where a male Bellamy is the main character.
I was so surprised the first time I heard Ellery as a boy's name... it sounds so feminine to me. I love it, I say go for it! I don't think you'll get many strange looks for it at all.
Just for fun, today I pulled up the Social Security popular names list and a random number generator. We had been striking out on name ideas and it was a fun little activity to lighten things up a bit. I let the random number generator pick a year, and then a ranking on the list. Some were really hilarious (to us).
A fun story update on Ellery. H actually CALLED the mini-golf course where we first learned of Ellery (a place my family has gone every year since I can remember for super competitive games) to check the spelling and story (which is printed on the 18th hole.) From them: Ellery is spelled just like that, and she was the youngest of the family of the first clan of pirates from Cape Cod, and she was known to have dinner w/ Blackbeard.
Basically, Ellery is a bada**. I really wonder if she would absolutely hate it if she knew we named her after that...
I don’t mind shortened names at all but the unnecessary ee sound at the end bothers me with certain names!
My mom does this and it drives me nuts. My cousin Josh she called Joshie and my cousin Bill she called Billy (when that’s not what they or their parents preferred), for my friends growing up she automatically added the ee sound to the end of their name. But my brother’s name is David and we call him Dave and she would flip a shit on anyone who called him davey. That woman is a trip hahaha
Me: 33 DH: 31 Location: Castle Rock, CO DD: 10.13.18 baby #2 due: 7.14.20
I seem drawn to names that start with E and our last name starts with a D. Not having our kid with erectile disfunction as their initials so those are ALL out.
@sarahzett Hearing Josh-ee would definitely drive me crazy!! I sometimes wonder if SO’s family struggle with the fact that they can’t baby-fy our kids names lol.
My given name ends in a “e” sound, and it totally doesn’t bother me.
What bothers me is people don’t outgrow their childhood nicknames. Dude- you are 40yo, and you still go by “Danny”, or “Tommy”, or “Mikey”?
Ummm... also, my opinion in this is primarily against male names in this respect. Which is something I should probably think about. Why doesn’t “Tammy” bother me the same way?
I think most names are fine with a Y that you hear a lot like a Tammy jimmy, Johnny, but it’s the ones that sound babyish like brookie.. are people going to call “Brooke/Brooklyn” brookie when she’s in her 40’s? Lol
If your given name typically has the EE sound or is commonly nicknamed with an EE it's different for sure. My sister is Becky. Totally different than "Davey" or something.
DD's name is Hazel and I call her Hazy all the time because it drives my family crazy.

@krzyriver my son's middle name is Echo! We decided to give him a more "normal" name as a first name, but wanted it in there so we could still call him by it, or he can go by it if he chooses. Everyone assumes I am the one that came up with it (because real talk, I'm definitely a hippie child ) but it was actually my husband that came up with it. He got I from a movie (it goes beyond just his middle. DH was amused, and it's fitting). We are still trying for another L name, and failing as far as boys names. Everyone I like, he hates. Lol So I give up on names until we find out if it's a boy or girl.
@jomama1618 AH I feel like allll the boy names I liked originally start with L. Our last name starts with L though so H was immediately dead set against all of them
@DunkinDecaf that sucks! Our Last name is an O, so Ds is literally L.O. (DH doesn't spend enough time online in forums or anything to know why that's funny to me.). He is set on having a sibset, so another L first name. I told him he better pray hard it's a girl (we both love and agree on a handful of L.girl names), because if it's a boy he's not going to have a freakin name! Ds's name was legitimately the only boy's name we could agree on. And that was around 20 weeks.
My H doesn't like discussing names until we find out the sex, so I'm dying over here! I'm living vicariously through all of you who are narrowing down your lists right now.
@SawyerRichardson Same here! We have a very long list that we can't discuss until we know the sex, which won't be until the 16 week or 20 week ultrasound!
