I guess our name is half decided.  Since we found out he’s a boy DH calls him Jaxson all the time instead of “the baby” and it feels weirdly right. But we can’t find a middle name we like. We had Wayne (DHs grandpa) picked out but it’s also his dads middle name. His dad is NOT someone you’d name a kid after. I suggested Curtis (after DH) but then there’s 50 cent...Curtis Jackson. Nah...I don’t think so.
ETA: My sis is due in 3 wks and is naming her little girl Onna Maria. Marie/Maria are family names on her bfs side and my middle name is Marie. She’ll be named after both of our grandmas too. Helen Marie and Anna Marie. I think it’s adorable! (Though I did tell her to stay away from Elsa if she ever has another girl :D )

  • @chyvie My H suggested Auden the other day! He didn’t know how to spell it tho and I was confused. Lol

We have zero name options for this baby.  It's a boy and I don't like anything.

My husband has suggested Thor so many times that it is almost starting to grow on me.

    We are doomed.

My dog is named Loki. DH suggested Odin or Thor for baby boy. I told him he has to wait till we have another dog.
  • @chyvie Aw, I love that one too. I don't think H will go for it, but I'm adding it to the list I'm texting him anyway. Lol

  • I was having a discussion Sunday with 2 people about family names. They commented about not wanting to offend anyone if they used a name from one family or another. This baby's middle name will be John-Michael. John was my grandpa's name, and he passed away in 2011. He was basically my dad. I know that everyone will understand why I chose that. It was a non-negotiable for me. Michael is DH's first name and SS's middle name. His family has a male tradition of the middle name being the father's first, so we really honored both families. And SS likes that he and brother share a middle name.
  • @chyvie  I love Auden... so unique and trendy.  For a girl, Dakota.... love love love that name!  As for pop culture and being a fan, DH loves the name Jaxon or Jackson, mostly because of Sons of Anarchy.  When that show started, I noticed a huge increase in the use of the name Jackson, Jax, or Jack.... 4 people I went to school with alone named their boys some variation of that so I have vetoed it altogether (even though I do love the name)....
  • @linssears4 Oh man, yes I know so many people who named their kid Jax because of that show. My H is obsessed with it, I can't stand it. Luckily he had zero desire to name our boy that. Lol

  • @chyvie @sammierose464 We haven't got as far as middle names, but thinking that's the next step once we find out the gender and can at least focus on that (less than 2 weeks! surreal!) and I'm hoping we can find something that we love that will also balance out the family thing.

Really enjoying the Thor names though, so if we run out of time we can always just go that route  ;)
  • @chyvie I think it's a great name, just wanted to make sure you knew of the similarities.

@hannaht8516 yes, exactly why I brought it up, you never know.
  • Does anyone worry about nicknames when picking baby names? I apparently have a tendency to pick names that don't easily nickname. Hazel has no obvious nickname, and Florence only has one, Flo, which I do not like lol

@mytrueloves I tend to like names that don't short form either. Makes it harder for people to change their name!

@mytrueloves My boys don't have names that have easy nicknames: Ethan and Enzo. We call them E and Z. All the boy names we're coming up with for #3 are the same way.

  • @chyvie Good point! I guess it kind of forces people to either call them by their names or pick a nickname based on personality. Although I admit that I call DD "Hazy" cause it drives my family crazy.
I also just realized that neither of our top boy picks nn well either. We're on a roll over here haha

  • SS is Otto... No easy nicknames there. I call him O sometimes, but he's also my munchkin.

We actually decided not to use Killian because we couldn't stop thinking about him being called "Kill". At least Griffin easily nicknames!
  • slizteesliztee member
Otto is such a cool name, @sammierose464

  • Based on the number of stupid nicknames/baby names I have for my dogs.... no matter what names we end up with our kids will a have a number of ridiculous pet names... totally my bad.  Haha.  Its endearing, right?
  • @linssears4 oh man, same.
  • @mytrueloves My family calls DD “Hazy” or “Hazel Basil” and it makes me want to stab them. I correct them each time, thankfully we started her nn before we delivered so lots of people call her Bean. I think even when a name has no obvious nn, people will still try to shorten it somehow.
  • My name has about 1 million nicknames for it, and anyone who knows me, knows they can only get away with perhaps 2-3 of them, and only my closest friends can call me those. Any other version of my name and you're liable to get bitch-slapped. The guys I use to work with offshore figured out that I hated one particular nn, and kept calling me that. So I've learned, never show your weakness!

My parents actually were pretty anti-nickname, and always wanted my brother and I to be called by our full names (he only has 1 nickname (again, don't ever call him that), so not a big deal for him).

the tldr is it's just fine if the name doesn't have a nn, or if you don't want your baby to be called a nn :)

(still in stranger danger mode, so sorry guys, you don't get to know my real name yet )
  • cjx95cjx95 member
The girl name we chose doesn't have a nn and thinking about the boy names we have I don't think they really do either... but no one in DHs family have nn's based on their actual names so we'll pick what we pick and friends will give them nn's as the grow together in school too
  • @missmaehurt The teachers at DD's old preschool called her "Hazel Basil" and I thought it was cute. My brother calls her "Mazel" because he, for some reason, tried really hard to get her first word to be "maize". I still don't know why, I think it was because he thought it would be funny.
The only nn family gave her that bothers me is my uncle calls her "Haselnuss" or hazelnut in German. It only bothers me because he's my BEC of the family though.

  • I'm so picky about nicknames. Growing up, my mom freaked out if anyone called me or my sister by shortened versions of our names and it was super annoying. My sister does go by a nickname now, but I still hate when people call me by my nickname. So for our kids I won't use a name if I'm not ok with them being called any of the possible nicknames. DD's name doesn't have any and most of the names we are considering for this LO have nicknames I'm ok with. But we have definitely thrown out names because of nickname possibilities. My DH loves the name Micah, but we both don't want him to be called Mike or Mikey so that's out. We love Charlotte, but don't really care for Charlie. It definitely complicates things.
  • @acciocoffee I feel you on that. For a girl I have always wanted Elizabeth- I looooove the name. But, especially in the past 5 years with the explosion of 'Ellie', I hate Liz, Lizzy, Beth, Ellie- the only nickname I like is Elle, and I couldn't guarantee thats the nickname they get. It sucks.
  • cjx95cjx95 member
@kiwi2628 my aunt's an Elizabeth, for as long as I've known her thought her name was Betsy. Until she added me on MySpace (throwback, lol) I just never knew. So that's a nn option you may or may not like. If you keep calling her by the nn you like others will hopefully follow suit, just keep expressing your distaste of other nn options
  • We had two girl names picked out: Eliana and Claira. Last appt doctor guessed that it’s two boys so now we’re trying to come up with boy names and not having much luck. With DS we only ever really came up with one name we liked. Though did consider Fraser (MILs maiden name) but decided against it
  • @kiwi2628 I really liked Elizabeth too! But then I remembered my cousin named his daughter that. We aren't close at all and only see each other maybe once every 5 years, but his wife would probably be pissed. But I also don't know that I care because it's a common name. It's still in the running, but it's low on the list now.

I'm just so ready to find out what this kid is so we can pick a name! DH still won't discuss names with me besides just turning down every name I mention. It's super annoying.
  • I try not to worry to much about nicknames. Kids will get called ALL kinds of weird names that have nothing to do with their actual names. My name is Nadine, and naturally I get Deen a lot. But I also get Weiner ALL THE TIME. I don't know where it came from or why but it sticks lol. I'm sure my Mum didn't think 'oh I better not go with Nadine, cause she may get Weiner' hahaha.

My husband has a very popular name, and there were about 5 of them in one class. He went through all of grade school and highschool by his last name. And he still does!
  • My husband's name is Michael, but he doesn't go by Mike. He actually really dislikes it, so it is really weird for me when people call him that. He mostly goes by Mac. When he was joining his motorcycle club, there as already a Mac so they called him Mike. It drove me crazy, because that's not a name he goes by. Thankfully now he has an "official" club nickname.
  • I agree with @nasalot188. You can plan nicknames all you want, but kids can end up with one that has nothing to do with their name, or they can decide they don’t like the nn you have been using and at 3 years old start yelling at you about how the nn is NOT their name. One of my boys did that and MH did the same thing when he was little.  They both still hate those nicknames.

@nasalot188 so Nadine is actually on our list lol.  Do you pronounce your name as Nah-dine or Nay-dine and do people ever say the wrong one?  Dh and I are having a disagreement about this..

    @bel194 I read it as nay-dean, I think it's a beautiful name(:
  • @bel194 ohhhh how fun!! I honestly love my name, I think when I was younger I didn't like it as much because it was so different, but I really grew to love it. I get both pronunciations. My immediate family says Nah-dine. Most friends and coworkers say Nay-dine. I don't really mind either way. I usually say Nay-dine when introducing myself as it's more clear.
  • bel194bel194 member
@nasalot188 Thanks! I've been saying it as Nay-dine in my head, but then DH brought up that it might be said the other way too.  But even if it does, it's definitely my my top girl name right now!

  • My name is Elizabeth and I go by Liz (not too worried about stranger danger cuz it's super common). H has two cousins that also married Elizabeth's, but we all go by different names.  I got tired of everywhere I went there was at least one or two other Elizabeth's
DH has 37 cousins not including their spouses, sooo... Not really a shocker that 3 cousins married Elizabeth's. It's not as popular anymore, I think, at least not in the top 10 as it was for years.
