@vflux33 I know you were hesitant to share your story but I am so glad you did. I am so sorry everything was so stressful and scary but am relieved there was a happy ending for all of you. Sending all our love.
@vflux33 you and those littles are champions. What a difficult process but what a blessing they are. So glad there won't be any long term effects either
Thanks, everyone. I hope all of you in your last few days or weeks of pregnancy have completely anticlimactic birth stories (which I will nonetheless read with interest)
AW Amelia’s birth story. Long. I won’t be offended if you don’t read
We arrived as scheduled to L&D at 1 pm, got in the recovery room where we would be coming back to, I got changed and they started IV fluids.
We were scheduled in the OR at 3, but my regular OB had an emergency. Her partner got there around 4:30 and another mom had an emergency c section, so I didn’t make it back to the OR until about 5:50. Which was fine, after my son’s birth I am absolutely ok waiting for the emergency to finish up and knowing it’s not me (I know that sounds terrible). DH and I just hanged out and talked while we waited. Time went surprisingly fast, during that wait I had several legitimate contractions that could be timed but hardly felt them.
When the time came I walked into the OR and sat on the edge of the table, the anesthesiologist did his thing behind me, which just felt like pinching and poking. Really not bad at all and I started feeling numb immediately. This was a huge relief because it was the first time I hadn’t felt itchy on my lower half in days. They put the foley in, which I wasn’t completely numb for and because of the weird half-numbness it felt like sharp poking when she swabbed. This isn’t how it usually feels, but it was quick. She swabbed my belly with beta iodine to sterilize the area. The drape went up and they did all sorts of pinching, poking and prodding to insure numbness, then brought DH in.
The first incision I did not feel, but got extremely lightheaded, flushed and nauseous. Anesthesiologist pushed some meds and within about a minute I felt so much better. My BP had dropped from the spinal and I get nauseous with meds anyway. I kept feeling a bunch of tugging and pulling, which feels like when your arm or leg is super numb from being asleep and you pick it up and shake it. Not painful in the least. I got nauseous two more times but they were quick to fix that. About 10 minutes in after the first incision I was warned there would be a big push and lots of pressure, her butt was stuck in my ribs and she didn’t want to come out. Immediately after they popped her out she cried and peed all over me
DH went with her across the room while they checked her over and finished me up. This was the worst part for me because it took the dr a few extra minutes to get the placenta out because it was deep in my uterus and right at fundus level. They had to give me a pitocin bolus to get it out, once again it wasn’t painful but I felt a lot of pressure and vibration. Once this was done it only took a few minutes to stitch me up and move me to the bed, where they handed me Amelia and wheeled me to our room as DH followed. She latched almost immediately and was awake and alert; a ginormous difference then my son’s birth experience. The anesthesia made me tremble pretty bad for the first 30 minutes or so, but it wore off quickly.
She was born at 6:19 pm and we did skin to skin and nursed for the first 12+ hours. My milk still hasn’t come in yet possibly because of the antihistamines I’m taking for pupps. I’m totally ok with formula, though!
TW maybe?
Also, advice to all moms to follow your instincts always. I was the perfect candidate for a VBAC, but felt like it wasn’t the right choice to the extent of extreme anxiety when my OB and I discussed it. I felt very at peace with a repeat cs. It turns out she had the cord wrapped around her neck 3 times and had it so shortened from being wrapped with a high placenta that a vaginal birth would have been nearly impossible to do safely, so I would likely have had a crash section like I did with my son. So listen to your mama instinct!
Had 5 minute apart contractions from 8:30pm last night. Decided to go to the hospital around 3:30am. Of course when we get there I'm only 1cm dilated and my contractions slowed down...so we went home to relax after 6am. Thank goodness we did! All day today I had horrible contractions, my shower was a blessing. Put a stool in the shower and ran warm water down my back. My mom also came over and helped me through the pain. Finally around 5pm my contractions were about 2-4 mins apart and the pain was too much, we decided to go back to the hospital. My mom and husband came with me.
I fly through triage, where I find out I'm.4.5 cms dilated, I did blood work to check on my low platelets which went up from 115 to 135 (yay) and an epidural was requested. By 6:30pm, that thing was heaven. No pain! It all vanished other than some pressure which let me know a contraction was happening.
I napped! At some point the nurse rushes in to tell me that babies heart dropped to 65. I was so nervous. She moved me on my other side, gave me oxygen, poked my belly to push him, and finally poked his head with her finger a few times - this all worked and heart rate got to a healthy 135. She monitored for about 45 minutes. Next thing you know I'm fully dilated and around 11:15 pm we prep to start pushing. Took me about a good 6 pushes and baby is out at 11:52! The doctor loved me hahaha. Told me to come back for my next deliveries. My mom was so happy to share such a beautiful experience with me and my husband. It was amazing.
Baby boy is so cute! Looking forward to our memories!!! So blessed and in love!!! Going home tomorrow night around midnight orI can stay in till Sat morning.
All the best to all the remaining deliveries!! Xoxo
What a great story, @nancysimp! I loved how your doctor basically said, "Thank you, cone again!" And very cool that your mom got to be there to support you!! Congrats! Goodness all around!
Thursday night I had some nausea and ended up throwing up but I just thought I ate something that didn’t agree with me. Friday morning I woke up early with some crampy feelings in my back but tried to go back to sleep. I noticed they were about 5 minutes apart but they seemed to go away by the time I got up to help my mom get my kids ready for school. I then go a shower and got ready for my NST and DH got ready for work. He left and my mom drove me to my NST(she had gotten 14 inches of snow at her house and decided to stay a couple nights just in case.) So we go to the hospital and they hooked me up and it started out normal until the contractions looked pretty strong and were coming every 4 minutes. The nurse came in and asked if I wanted to be checked before I left. I said sure- I was almost at a 5 and fully effaced. She took the NST strip and that info back to the dr and midwife who came in and told me I was having baby today and they were admitting me. I called DH so he could come from work and was moved to my room. DH got there and I was in the tub. I stayed in a while but my back started to hurt. I got out and we walked and walked. Then the midwife came in and wanted to know how I felt about having my water broken about 1:00 I said sure and it was the hugest amount of water ever. I soaked through three big pads and a towel once I got to the bathroom. We walked some more and then were checked again and I was between a 7-8 around 2:30. I got in the shower for a while until contractions were strong and I could barely stand. I went back out in the room where DH, my nurse, and midwife helped me labor. They checked me again and I was still an 8. I labored for a while longer and was having terrible back labor and knew I was tensing up too much and baby wasn’t coming down. I decided to ask for something to take the edge off so I could relax a little. I was given 5cc of Nubain through my iv and then moved from laying on my back to almost doggy style with the foot of the bed lower and the head higher. It was a little painful still but my midwife helped me to get through it. She checked me after about 6 contractions and said we could push. I flipped back over. With the first push she moved the lip of cervix out of the way. And then with three more contractions and 6 pushes. I helped pull him out at 5:53 pm. The worst part was after my other two kids the head was the hard part then the rest slid right out. I had to push him and pull under his shoulders. I pulled him up to my chest and was in love. I still hadn’t checked what I had and my arms were like jello. DH helped me and we were surprised to see it was a boy. I just snuggled him while I delivered my placenta and was given a few stitches and cytotech to help my uterus contract. As soon as all that was done DH called down to the waiting room where my mom and kids were. My daughter was shaking because she was so excited. And my son was smitten even though he’s too cool to show it. I decided to bottle feed and not stress myself and the baby out trying to breast feed. After the Nubain he was a little lethargic and wouldn’t latch. His sugars have been testing well and he is a champion eater. He was finally weighed in at 8lbs 10oz and 21 inches long. His head and shoulders are both 37 cm which is why he was so hard to get out. I love his little rolls on his legs and arms.
Eleanor was born on 3/10/18, three days late and worth the wait. I had crappy contractions all day on the 9th and they became consistent at 7am the next morning. I timed them at 5-7 minutes for 3 hours and realized that I was having trouble talking through them so we decided to go in. On the way to drop off mini and the dog they got even closer together and even more painful. Car contractions are the. fucking. worst. So by the time we get to L&D at 1 I’m having to vocalize through them and I’m sure they’re going to admit me- so imagine my surprise when they check me and I’m only at a 3. But, my BP was elevated and they could tell the contractions were the real deal so they admitted me anyway thank GOD. They offered an epidural right away but I asked for an alternative to try to get a little further along. I had a dose of fentanyl which took the edge off, labored for two more hours, and then asked for the epidural. After it was placed (which sucked a lot more than I remembered, and the anesthesiologist was a tool) my contractions slowed down so they checked me at 5:30 and I was already at a 5! They broke my water and said they’d see how that went before starting pitocin. My contractions picked up and I felt lots of pressure with each one. I took a nap but the pressure was making me nervous so I asked for another check at 7:30- ok, 6.5 almost 7! The midwife suggested I change positions so they rolled me over which just intensified things. She told me to let her know if the pressure intensified and went to check another patient. As soon as she left I felt the urge to push and told the nurse to get her back in here NOW lol. She checked me and yep, I was complete and baby was RIGHT THERE. This was at 7:50. She called the midwife and the birth team while telling me to blow through the contractions without pushing. The midwife rushed in, gave me the green light, and I pushed this baby out in three intense pushes over the course of a minute. She was born at 7:55, 8lbs 5oz and 19.5in long and a second degree tear. What. A. Whirlwind! I’m so glad I didn’t opt for the induction on Thursday because it looks like my body remembered what to do lol. She nursed well right away and they sent us home at noon yesterday after only 24 hours from admitting to discharge! I’m still in shock and recovering but so so happy she’s here and I’m not pregnant anymore!
Went in for my scheduled induction @ 7am, and started pitocin at 8. Everything was going smooth until 11:30 when I got bed bound because of high blood pressure and dizziness. Pain and vomiting made me decide to get an epidural and boy am I glad because stinker twisted the wrong way and I spent 2 hours at 10 trying to turn him and not have a cesarean. Placenta ruptured so after delivery i got to do pitocin some more. Bleeding slowed around 5:30 and we went to the mother baby unit.
Birth story for those interested: Wednesday morning I woke up with some light cramping and contractions; nothing major. I thought they were just Braxton Hicks. But I also started spotting so I called my OB and the nurse said to check in with Antenatal to confirm any progress and rule out an abruption. So I went in and was not dilated at all. They sent me home. Thursday (next day) I had an ultrasound to check fluid level and fetal wellbeing since I was overdue. Everything was fine and Maddie was very happy inside. After that I had my weekly OB appointment. I was still having occasional contractions so OB checked me again and I was still not dilated at all. OB thought I was having false labor. With no medical reason to deliver yet I got scheduled for an induction the following Wednesday. Had nusence contractions all night Thursday night and woke up Friday exhausted and frustrated. Had more contractions throughout the day Friday but they came and went and varied in length and severity. I feared being sent home again if I went in to Antenatal again so I waited. Around 8:30pm I had one powerful contraction that made me realize it was really time to go in. I called my OB and arranged for my Mom to pick up Olivia. During the car ride to the hospital the contractions really started ramping up suddenly and I felt like I needed to push. I told DH to hurry up. My Mom met us there and DH wheeled me in through the ER since it was late. We just left the car there with my Mom. Finally got up to Maternity and I knew Maddie was coming. I asked for an epidural and to be put in a room immediately, skipping triage. When they checked me I was shocked I was already at 9cm!! No time to start an IV. I asked for an epi again but the nurse said "honey we can see your Baby; just push her out." Two pushes and out she came. I'm still shocked at how it all went down and how I somehow realized my dream of a natural birth. 19 minutes total from walking in the hospital to giving birth.
@citygirl17 - what an awesome story! I’m pretending this is how it’ll go for me. A girl can dream! Although I’m sure the intensity at the end was crazy!!
@citygirl17 yay! I thought it sounded like the real thing yesterday when you posted! So glad that everything went so well but I can’t imagine riding in the car with that strong of contractions!
My take away advice is to listen to your body! I did not have the usual pattern of consistant contractions but I was definitely in labor! If I had described my symptoms to the nurse even 15 minutes before we left the house she would have told me to hold off coming in.
Sloane Colette is here! 8lbs 5 oz and 21 in long. Went in for an induction Sunday night at 5pm, pitocin started at 8pm. I got the epidural at midnight and was able to sleep on and off throughout the night. 3.5 cm at 2 am. My water was broken around 10 am at 6cm. I was complete and started pushing at 1pm. She finally came at 2:00 pm on the dot. She had a hard time with delivery and the cord was wrapped around her neck. She had some respiratory issues. She was taken up to NICU where she’s getting some extra attention. Her WBC came back elevated this morning so they did a blood culture this morning and went ahead and started antibiotics just in case it’s an infection and not just stress from delivery. It’ll take about 48 hours to come back so she’ll stay in nicu until it comes back. If it’s an infection, she’ll continue the antibiotics for about a week. If not, then they’ll quit the antibiotics and she’ll get to come home. We got to hold her today they removed her cpap and feeding tube this afternoon.
Birth story short version: Went in for induction (39w, baby measuring small) at 8pm. Labor got going by 7am and baby came at 12:20pm.
Long version: Went in Monday night at 8pm to start the cervical ripening. Got all checked in and was put in the same room I had DD in - crazy coincidence. The first dose of Cytotec was placed at 8:30. Didn't sleep much between the first and second dose because baby kept moving (or I kept moving) and getting lost on the monitor. When second dose was placed at 12:30 I was given an Ambien and was able to sleep a few hours. At 5am they checked my progress and while my cervix was softer, it was still only a fingertip dilated. So dose three was placed. I was feeling crampy and by 7am thought I was feeling some little contractions.
My Dr came to check on me before going into the clinic around 8:30. She had an attending with longer fingers check my cervix as she'd last heard I wasn't progressing. Well, I was at a 3 so they broke my water. Got an IV started and planned to start pitocin an hour later. Contractions were picking up, but still manageable, though I knew that'd change after pitocin, so I asked for an epidural. Epidural was placed at 10am, around the time pitocin began. By 10:30 I was at a 6, but baby wasn't tolerating the pitocin well, so they stopped it. My contractions continued without it. At 11:15 I was at a 7 and 100% effaced. My nurse had my Dr come in as she thought I'd be done soon. 11:45 I was at 8. They tried a couple different positions to get those last cms and for baby to drop more, but baby didn't really like anything besides laying on my side. After all the moving around though I was basically complete. Pushed three times during a contraction. Another push and two half pushes and he was out. Got to do skin to skin right away. Only needed a couple stiches.
He is such a peanut. Smaller than MFM had expected him to be from the u/s Thursday so I think getting him out was the right thing. I had so much anxiety about inducing, but it ended up going so smoothly. After my 26hr labor with DD I was worried it'd be longer.
Breastfeeding is going so so. He seems to latch ok sometimes. Other times he has no interest. They have to check his blood sugar with every feed though, so poor kid is getting lots of heel pricks. We've used the nipple shield which works well when he tries it. I've been pumping and syringe feeding to keep his sugars up. Newborn snuggles are the best.

@becausescience that’s awesome that your induction went pretty smooth. The heel pricks are terrible and DS didn’t eat as much at the hospital because of them- I think he equated being hungry with that pain. As soon as they stopped he started eating better.
My birth stories for my girls are as different as can possibly be. DD1 was a 37 week induction due to pree. DD2 was a scheduled CS a few days before due date due to flipping footlong breech at 39 weeks (man that hurt but I didn’t recognize it for what it was). I went in for my 39 week OB visit Tuesday morning and baby was still high (-4 station) and I was only 1 cm dialated. Baby’s fundal growth had slowed by quite a bit so dr told me we’d do an ultrasound to check her size and water level- boy was it a surprise when he said that she’s breech! It was honestly the one situation we hadn’t anticipated since she’d been head down since 32 weeks. Due to baby’s size and my own, an inversion would have been more dangerous than helpful so he said C section was our only option. I couldn’t do it that day since I had already eaten but we set it up for yesterday instead. We arrived at the hospital at about 6:50am on Wednesday 21st. Took about 20 minutes to complete registration and was in pre op for about an hour and a half getting my complete health history and going over what to expect. They wheeled me into the operating room slightly before 9am and proceeded with the spinal. Everything after that kinda became a blur because there was so much going on. They started the first cut at 9:18am and Luna was out at 9:22am. I couldn’t do immediate skin to skin due to being in the sterile field but I cried when I heard her cry the first time and they brought her to my husband after getting her Apgars. She was already giving some solid feeding cues and wasn’t even a half hour old yet. Ultimately, it took much longer to stitch me up than get her out. The air bubbles created by baby’s removal were extremely painful but not completely unmanageable once the anesthesiologist told me to breathe through them. I was in recovery for a few hours because I had some clotting issues at first plus DD decided to feed at breast for almost an hour. DD had 4 wet diapers and 3 BMs in her first 24 hours. She cluster fed from about 10pm-1:30am (5 times total) so they took her into the nursery for a bath and some time under the heating lamp and when she returned, she slept for 3.5 hours. She’s eating like a champ. I’m so excited because my right side started leaking after one of my walks- I’m less than 36 hours post birth and my milk didn’t come in with DD1 until day 4. They took out my catheter, removed my dressing, and eventually my IV today so it’s looking good for a discharge tomorrow after only 48 (or so) hours. Its just so crazy because with DD1, we arrived at hospital at 7am Saturday and baby wasn’t even born until 4:16pm Sunday. We weren’t discharged until about 7pm Tuesday, making the whole process 3.5 days. Honestly, a difficult recovery ahead notwithstanding, I feel like this time has been so much easier than with DD1. They say each child is different and I totally agree with that now. Luna has mostly been a dream and can’t wait to take her home to meet her big sister!
Chase Ryan was born on Thursday March 22 at 1:08 pm - 5 lbs 9 oz and 18 inches long. Here's how it went down:
Thursday morning I was up about 5:30 am having irregular contractions, so I wasn't really paying attention to them much and went about my business writing my shower thank you cards. By 9 am I started noticing they were about 6 mins apart, and by 10 am I started tracking them at about 4 mins apart so we got DD and our dog situated and then headed into the hospital.
We arrived at 11:45 am and got into a room at 12. When the nurse was doing a cervix check at 12:20 pm she broke my water and said I was 5 cm and that he had pooped. I got blood work done and was waiting for it to come back so I could get an epidural, but the contractions were coming fast and furious when my midwife arrived. After about 2 contractions, I couldn't wait for the epidural and had to push. It took about 3 pushes and he was born at 1:08 p.m. - about an hour and a half after our arrival at the hospital!! Delivering the placenta was pretty gnarly, and I got a 2nd degree tear, but overall it was a crazy quick delivery and never in my life would I have thought I'd go med-free.
Chase is tiny for being almost full term, so we are tracking his blood sugar before every feeding and so far he's doing great with his numbers and BFing. We are so excited he is finally here and already so in love!!
I've been totally MIA at the end of my pregnancy but I felt the need to post my labor and delivery story simply because I need all the extra support. I never thought I would have a 35 hour traumatic birth. It never crossed my mind. Monday I was feeling very crampy and had a terrible back ache that came and went with what I thought were BH. Decided to go to l&d to make sure every thing was okay that afternoon. Turns out I was having contractions every 5 min but was not dilated and 0%. So I was sent home and told to come back when they were 3 min apart. I called into work Tuesday because I was just so uncomfortable but not in any "real" pain. Wednesday I went into my scheduled OB appointment and my blood pressure was reading high for the first time in my pregnancy. Apparently, I had consistently had traces of protein in my urine my last few appointments as well. Which in hindsight is very frustrating because had I known, I may have been able to prevent the blood pressure going too high by taking off work, etc. Anyway, dr sent me to the hospital to have them monitor my blood pressure. Once there, I was admitted and started on Cervadil, as my cervix was still completely closed. 12 hours later there was still no change, even though I was contracting. The dr then suggested I try the Foley bulb next which would manually dilate me to 4cm and then hopefully stimulate my body to do the rest. This is already Thursday morning. The Foley was started and on came the intense contractions since my body was forced to dilate. The pain was so intense i began to literally black out and stop breathing in between contractions. After about 3 hours I asked for my epidural. They said it was a little too early but gave it to me anyway. After that I slept the rest of Thursday and by Thursday night, I was still only 4 cm. After all the agony, my cervix had progressed only to 80% effaced but baby was moving down. They broke my water next. Still no dilation. Then her heart rate began to drop dramaricaly with each contraction. My epidural also stopped flowing correctly so feeling began to come back. They then informed me that I needed an emergency c section. I began to feel the urge to push, which was very dangerous since my cervix was closed. They wheeled me into the OR and I was shaking so hard from fear. As they began, I told them I could feel the pain but they told me it was just pressure. The anesthesiologist tried to fix my epidural flow as the surgery is happening. They get my baby out and I hear her cries but I'm also overwhelmed by pain. She was born at 5:06am Friday morning after nearly 36 hours of labor. I then had a panic attack on the table and they had to give me something to calm me down. Once I got back to my room though, and they placed her on my bare skin, I didn't even remember I was in pain. I've never felt so in love. So it was all worth it. But it is definitely something I will be coping with for a long time.

Baby #2 M/C 4/5/16
extra attention.

The heel pricks are terrible and DS didn’t eat as much at the hospital because of them- I think he equated being hungry with that pain. As soon as they stopped he started eating better.
