@sarahhedger7 I was going to use a gym bag. But I decided to use a roller bag recently on the suggestion of the childbirth class teacher. Apparently the hospital gives out a bunch freebies and I need the space.
@cford08 - I was like @megpeg. I’m sure csections change things. But for me, it was my own yoga/sweatpants and nursing tanks w/zip-ups (or a robe) to go over them. Before baby #2, I honestly went to Goodwill and bought up all their men’s sweatpants that would give me a little space and be cozy. Then I wouldn’t feel bad if they got ruined with blood leaking. But I definitely preferred dark pants of some sort for extra security in case I soaked through a pad too quickly.
@kbiala I’m definitely one of those parents that will feed her toddler some French fries on the way home lol it keeps him from screaming when he’s hungry which helps everyone!
@cford08 while I was in the hospital I just wore the gowns from there and when I left I wore a nightgown and a robe. I had a c-section so I didn’t want anything on or near my incision. It was also summertime so I didn’t need to bundle up.
@sarahhedger7 I definitely brought a rolling suitcase when I had DS. They do let you take so much stuff home! DH and I actually brought separate bags and when we left they were packed full of stuff the hospital gave us!
@cford08 I had my own dark yoga pants to wear and comfy t shirts to nurse in. I feel better in my own clothes and the hospital gown for nursing in was like a tent on me which just felt harder to nurse in, honestly. This time I’m packing nursing pjs and I have a couple of nursing gowns that are in my amazon bag for after delivery so I have options in case pants aren’t comfy. I’m also packing a cardigan and a robe because sometimes the room felt really cold to me last time. Lol.
@cford08, I had brought my own pajamas, but ended up just doing the hospital gowns the whole time. For me with all the bleeding, I didn't feel like I wanted to lay/sit in my own clothes that I wouldn't want blood on. But I've also heard a lot of other people say they liked being in their own clothes. For me though I ended up not caring enough to change out of the gown. I also had an emergency c-section so I imagine that may have hindered my desire to wear regular clothes.
Not sure if you've checked it out yet, but there's also a hospital bag thread (started not too long ago but I think it hasn't been posted on lately) and a lot of people talk about what they wore or didn't wear during their hospital stay.
Re: TDap - saw my OB today and she said I had to get the shot again but everyone else who got it with DD should be fine for 5 years. So I went and got mine this afternoon. Thanks to everyone who weighed in!!
I got my TDAP today too. Midwife said every 10 years is fine for everyone else who will be around baby. Weird that not everyone says the same thing...but it's probably not a binary thing and more of a range of effectiveness? Of course we should all follow our own caregiver's advice.
Okay, I'm a STM but never went into labor with my first (scheduled cs) so please don't throw things at me if this is a stupid question...
But is it obvious when you're having real contractions vs like... just stomach cramps or gas pains or strong Braxton hicks? I've been getting stomach aches lately, I think just from being constipated, but I get paranoid that it's actually contractions.

It feels different for everyone, really. I felt mine starting in my back and wrapping around to the front, I also felt pain in my thighs, alone with the uterus tightening from the top down. If your pains can be timed or persist and don’t go away with water and rest, call your OB and see if they want to check you out. Back pain *can* be a sign of preterm labor.
@ashleyf911 for me, my contractions always felt like a wave. I had back labor some with my first and it started out as low back pain and cramps—like my period. And then a wave from my left to my right side for a while to flip him from sunny side up. Then they started t the top of my bump and waved down.
Okay mamas. As a FTM i am lost as to what i am actually supposed to dress baby in for sleep. I'm in NJ so it will still be cold in March. We definitely plan to swaddle, but what do I put her in? Just diaper, then newborn gown and then swaddle? (i have the ergobaby velcro ones and A&A muslin blanket ones). Will she be warm enough / too warm? Help!
@GG620 For us, we dressed DS the same year round because we always have the thermostat at 68 or 69 overnight. We used fleece and cotton halo swaddlesacks. If we used the fleece, he was just in a diaper and onesie underneath. If we used the cotton swaddle, usually he would be in a diaper and a cotton sleeper or long sleeved onesie. DS was (and still is) like a little furnace while he sleeps so we had to try not to overdress him or he'd get too warm.
@sarahhedger7 unfortunately, we live in an older house and the heat (steam) is much better downstairs than upstairs. So while the heat is actually set to 71 its usually about 67 upstairs. We have a space heater in our room that we set to 70 though so it is usually around 69-70 in our bedroom.
@ashleyf911 for the sleepsacks - they all appear to have the arms open that I have seen / received. Did you just leave DS's arms out? I am a little confused by these because I thought they don't sleep as well / can wake themselves up if they aren't swaddled (aka arms out). Any input?
There are a ton of arms in swaddles/sleepsack hybrids. Off the top of my head...
Woombies SwaddleMes Miracle Blankets Halo (they make arms out and then a kind where you wrap a piece of fabric around with Velcro)
SwaddleMes were great at first for my little swaddle addict until she turned into Macgyver. Then we switched to Miracle Blankets which are amazing but kind of a PITA in the middle of the night with not a lot of light. We’re going to start out with a woombie this time and hope for the best. They aren’t quite as tight though, so we’ll see what happens. Transitioning my kid out of a swaddle was probably one of the hardest things I dealt with.
@GG620 the ones we used have the option to do arms in or out. We did arms in until he was starting to figure out how to roll over, and then we did arms out. We made the switch to a regular sleep sack (with no swaddle option) when he was 8 or 9 months old or so. The halo ones we used initially are like this:
