Cervix check

I got Evening Primrose Oil at CVS. You might want to talk to your provider or do some research before taking it. There is a heated debate (even within my practice, which is frustrating) about whether to take it or not, and for how long. Some feel strongly that you should only take it for 1 week maximum (starting at 39 weeks). Others think the research shows it neither helps nor harms and say you shouldn't bother with it at all. Others think it may be helpful and recommend starting at 36 weeks. I balanced out what I heard from 3 different providers at my practice who all had different opinions and did not start at 36 weeks as I originally planned, but instead started it today at 38 weeks.

My check yesterday showed the same as when in preterm labor - 0 dilation or effacement. High, tight, and closed. Bet he's going to come late now. Only 6 days until EDD!
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

At my appointment today, I was still around 2 cm dilated, but 75-80% thinned. Lots of BH today, too. I lost my mucus plug on Friday. 4 days until EDD!  I can't believe she's almost here!

Progressed to 1cm today, 70% effaced and had a sweep done. Officially scheduled for next Wednesday so my next check will be at L&D

@DungeonTrollMel I probably missed this, but given your due date is still two weeks away, why did they do the membrane sweep now?

Had an appt today at 39 weeks. 0 dilation. Her head is low and engaged though (has been for weeks). They started to talk about inducing on 11/27 (4 days past due), but I declined. They will let me go up to 10 days past due and while it would be miserably uncomfortable, I plan to let labor start naturally as long as baby is healthy and it's safe. Will be curious to see how much longer the wait is!

@dragonfly87-2 i am being induced at 39 weeks so she did a sweep since I’m full term and it’s always better if it happens naturally versus induction.

I know most people wouldn’t elect to induce at 39 and I’m in the monitority. My OB won’t let IVF moms go any later than 40, and because of that mixed with my hypothyroid, MTHFR and history I am allowed to go as early as 39. Mostly for mental health we went with this option. IVF babies have an increased risk of issues post term and I am having lots of anxiety getting close to the end about just making sure he is here safe after everything else we have been through. Plus I am physically done. I am so uncomfortable all the time.

@DungeonTrollMel Ah ok, that makes sense! Definitely didn't have to share that much info, but was just curious. :) FX that you will go into natural labor soon!

@dragonfly87-2 in Ontario they usually don't start putting the pressure on to induce until 42 weeks but even after that point it is still your decision. They send you for a scan almost every 2nd day to check on baby though. FX you don't, but if you do go 10 days past the due date maybe you could ask to wait longer for labour to happen naturally?

Knottie19640588 Yeah, my plan is to still hold off if I get to 10 days past due. I know my doctor initially said that's what she does, but would need to see what the practice rules are. In the US, some practices actually won't let or see you if go beyond a date (probably liability/insurance related--we are sue happy and litigious here unfortunately).

Had my first cervix check today at 39 weeks. I've had a lot of miserable things done to and through my cervix between fertility testing and treatment and other health issues, but this was flipping awful. I think she put her entire hand in there, and I'm bleeding so much. :( Anyway... cervix is not dilated yet, but it is soft and 40% effaced. Feeling bummed out that there is no dilation, even though I know it can happen quickly. I'm getting nervous about the size of my baby and they were already talking about induction today, saying they'll want to talk about it next week to minimize my chances of a c-section. I'm disappointed that an unmedicated birth may be not be in the cards, but I'll do whatever needs to be done.

@yesouican: Sorry to hear that it hurt. I have only had two checks and there was mild discomfort, but not too bad (especially compared to the torturous feeling of having my IUD inserted). Hopefully future checks are not as painful.

I also had 0 dilation, but her head was right at my cervix. My doctor mentioned induction briefly, but also said that dilation can come on very quickly...and that cervix checks aren't really that accurate prior to labor. Which makes you wonder why they even bother. I am hoping for an unmedicated birth (other than the damn antibiotics for GBS), so FX we can both have our birth plans come to fruition!

@dragonfly87-2 Thank you for the positive comments. I'm glad your checks weren't that painful! I am still bleeding from it hours later, ugh. My midwife also said dilation can come on quickly and that for all she knows I could go into labor tomorrow. (Yes please.) I actually requested the cervix check as my practice doesn't put much stock in them, and obviously I kind of regret it now. Oh well! Here's hoping both our babies can arrive unmedicated!

Had my 8th? 9th? check on Thursday and nothing was happening as always. Now I'm a day past my due date and waiting for my induction on Thursday unless he comes before...
