The Great Name Thread

Re: The Great Name Thread

  • @mountainsmama i think that’s pretty!! I’d pronounce it with the long aah sound personally but can see some people doing it the other way. I can definitely see where you’re going with the spelling change to help but feel like that might just add to the difficulty since most people won’t intuitively spell it with 2 a’s. The pronunciation might not be as big of a deal.

  • @mountainsmama When I read it I thought Ash-a (rhymes with Cash) but it might depend on where you're from how you would instinctively pronounce it. I think it's pretty either way :)

@tooraloorah I love the name Juliet!

@klburke88 I really like the name Brady! That was on our list but DH shot it down :(
  • @mountainsmama, I would definitely  pronounce Asha “Ah-sha.”
  • @peppersmith22 I totally read that article yesterday on Nameberry, lol! It's slightly misleading, as it's counting the number of page views those names get on their website, and not actual babies with those names. But I think it's a very good indicator of trends and what names may be popular next year when our babies are born

  • Ohhhh @klburke88 that is misleading! I didn't pick up on that
  • Thanks guys! I think we can probably deal with the pronunciation issues. I guess I have a name that could be pronounced two ways and it doesn't really bug me. I like Asha Sofia.

@rach-j I don't watch GOT, but the fact that there is a character on there with that name makes me like it less, hah
  • @mountainsmama Oh no! I'm sorry haha. I think its a really pretty name. Love it paired with Sophia as well.
  • I got this email from baby center yesterday that also has a top 100 list of names for 2017. It says "Our data comes from more than 500,000 parents who shared their baby's name with us in 2017."

  • @mountainsmama all I think of is the American Speech/language and Hearing Association!  (Audiology mind). https://www.asha.org/
  • @mountainsmama I'd say Asha like cash, like Asher has the cash sound.   I like it either way!

  • We’re leaning towards Sloane Rae or Sloane Mae. We’re not sold on Sloane yet but it’s definitely where we’re leaning. We’re not Irish. Anyone think it’s weird to give such a Celtic name if we’re not Irish lol?
  • @julzy not weird. I have a hebrew name and im not hebrew.
  • @julzy nope not weird at all--we are going with Connor and though we both have a bit of Irish in our ancestry (standard Eastern European mix) it's not really something we identify with. We've also been asked if we are UFC fans and are naming him after Connor McGregor. Um, that would be a no lol!
  • @mountainsmama I would pronounce it ah-sha and would have never imagined saying it with a hard A until you mentioned it...

  • So we're down to two for our daughter  and it's killing us.
I like Delaney Jade as first and middle- I've only heard Delaney as a boys name or a last name, but I think it's super cute and quite feminine. I've also loved the name for ages (since about the 8th grade lol) from a song.
Fiance loves Harper Jade, which is a great name , but isn't quite the "it" name for me.
This is our first and having two and a middle name were both set on the middle name it's kind of driving us mad trying to decide without one of us being disappointed  :D .

  • Taking out my anxiety for AS next week by posting probably names here!

    boy: John (Jack) Kevin
    girl: Anna Jean

we’re maybe 85% sure about both but I keep thinking of alternatives. It’s so hard to decide!
  • @priestess619 I like both names a lot! Delaney is the name my best friend had picked out for a girl but she ended up having a boy. I think Harper is super cute and it’s one of the names I considered. However, I do think Delaney is less common so for that reason I would probably perfer Delaney Jade. Have you looked up the popularity rankings for each name? Maybe that will help convince your DH!
  • @priestess619 I like both names!  But I think Delaney Jade sounds better together and Delaney is a really cute name!  I've only ever known it to be a girls' name btw :)

  • @JJMNO1616 another reason I'm leaning towards Delaney, it's less common! SO thinks Harper is different and cute but I don't think he realizes that it's actually (kind of) common.
@psuxray07 yes thank you! It flows better. His last name is a one syllable name too so it flows much better.

Gotta convince him! I wish it wasn't just between two at this point he just keeps telling me we'll "marinade on it" and it'll work itself out  :D:s
  • @priestess619 I vote Delaney too! I know a lot of Harpers
  • @priestess619 I love Delaney as well and actually know a little girl named Delaney. Her family calls her Laney-girl and I think it's the cutest :)

  • @priestess619 I work with a girl named Delaney. I love the name and I’ve never met a boy Delaney!

I like that versus the popularity of Harpers going around lately.

This is coming from a girl who had four other Michelle’s in her grade. It becomes annoying. I always hated being “Michelle P.” As applied to “Michelle G” or “Michelle M.” Etc!
  • Just curious on peoples' opinions, how does everyone feel about the name Jamie? (For a girl)We are playing around with some different names right now
  • @sassygirl51486 - I’m one of the weirdos who like or dislike a name due to a person I know with that name. I worked with a Jamie who was a lazy POS. Before working with her I liked the name lol!

I don't think you're a weirdo at all - I think most people will have negative or positive associations with a name because of their experiences. There are several names that I like in theory but are a total no-go because they were the name of an ex or boss or someone and I will forever have that association!
  • @Puddlewonderful I think John "Jack" is a great name! It *is* my son's name so I may be a bit biased  ;) We call him Jack 100% of the time but John is on his birth certificate.

I have to say, a lot of people don't get that Jack is a nn for John and are really confused about his name; it's a family tradition so I never knew it was uncommon. I don't regret picking it for a second, though, and any confusion is usually cleared up by saying "It's an Irish nn". We're barely Irish at all but definitely look it so usually people accept that without further comment.

  • Thanks for the help, my dh has James for a middle and  think it would be cute/sweet to, in a way name after him! Also what is the popular opinion on using 2 middle names?? I really happen to like the idea, especially because we are sort of obligated to use an "M" name but dont love any of them (We are naming after a family member that passed since that's just what you do in the Jewish religion)....For that reason i want to add another middle name of my choice
  • @priestess619, Harper was #1 on my girl list but we chose something else because I think it's going to be really popular in the next few years.  I still love the name though.  Delaney is really cute.

@g_amoss, not weird at all.  I'm a teacher and have a pretty substantial list of names I'll NEVER use.
  • @keeksie84 I love Harper! Just gotta convince DF that Delaney is cuter !  :D

I've been putting off the name game ever since DH told me no to Saylor (as a first name) and that he had no more input and leaving it up to me.  The names I had it narrowed down to were Paisley, Summer and Ariel.  Paisley has some strong negative opinions on the web, even though I thought it was pretty feminine.  Ariel we had been considering for a while and went with our whole coastal theme (big beach people).  Summer also goes with our theme and I think it might end up being one of those two.  If its Ariel, I might go with Ariel Saylor since I still love Saylor and am afraid I'll never be able to use it if we dont have another girl.

Names are hard. I have to picture myself being able to say it to them as a baby, as a teenager and an adult.

I have two middle names but that is because I turned my maiden last name into a middle name. I didn't want to replace my given middle name because I was named after my grandmother so I just have two now! For that reason I don't think there is anything wrong with two middle names. It never causes me any problems but I do occasionally have to pick one middle initial to use because there isn't an option to put both. It's way less confusing then having two last names though so I'm glad I didn't hyphenate!

That makes total sense, very cool thank you for your input. We are considering Jamie Blake Maxine-Opinions welcome:)
  • @scuba_chic People don't like Paisley? I like Paisley! I like Ariel too. You could always come up with two solid choices and decide when you see her. That's what we did with DS.
  • @scuba_chic Summer is my favorite of those!  It's so cute and I've only ever come across 1 Summer in my life, lol.  Also, I <3 the beach.
