@seitzy3 DD's name is something that I'm sure some people would side eye because it is not traditional. My name taste has changed since then but I still love her name for her so I don't let stuff like that bother me. I think what makes the problem worse with the name above is the "y" in there for a BOY, since the "y" tends to be something people associate with "feminizing a name"

@sabriel1 I'm not offended at all I just thought it was funny! But same as you, my name taste has changed as well. I just loved the named Declan for a boy but when we were told it was a girl, I didn't want to let go of the name. It suits her perfectly. She's my only "weird" name out of my three daughters.
I wouldn’t side eye for a girl. This is a boy. He said in my coop class and I always struggled getting it right. He’s the reason declan is off the table in our house.
Reyn. Just saw it today. Not sure if its for a boy or girl, or how to pronounce it Reign? Ryan? Ray-n?
When I first read it I pronounced it as Wren. Then maybe you're right, reign, rain looks like it fits better?
It could be Wren, i didn't think of that . All i know is its a new 2nd? Or 3rd? Or 4th? Cousin of mine, the FB announcement had a baby in a white diaper and gender neutral hat and it's name no other data.
@babybro218 I laughed out loud at your "Atlas Shrugged" pun. I was a middle/high school English teacher until this school year so a good literary pun can never be helped and I would go as far as to say...should be encouraged. I just finished some freelance work for a client last week who needed SEO content for their blog space. The client was completely horrendous so I'm glad the project is finished and I won't be inclined to do any more work for the guy but... on the best mid-priced hunting rifle scope. I wrote things like "this product truly is the best bang for you buck" in their and maybe it went over his head...or maybe he just didn't think I was funny...but DH and I had a good laugh about it later. Puns rock.

THAT is awesome. I never shy away from a pun, much to DH's chagrin most of the time. My dog is even named Iggy Pup (a la Iggy Pop).
She pronounced it true story. I kind of just stared at her like how tf am I supposed to take you seriously right now? And that poor girl for having to grow up with that
The hospitals in town put birth announcements up on big scrolling billboards. There are always some very unique spellings/ creative names. One that took me by surprise, though, was baby "Wolfgang Amadeus". I guess they're big classical music fans?
We had a high school girl show up at our house, selling Kirby vacuums. Her name was Rain. All I could think of was my hippie mother and how she thought about naming my oldest sister Jamaica Rainbow (she went with Sara Rose instead).
My coworker showed me a news article about a guy who was arrested for doing something stupid, and his name was "Cobra." Coworker says "When parents give their kid a name like that, it severely limits their career choices."

I asked DH if we were having a girl if I could name her Declyn, he said no. Thankfully we had a boy. The "deck" part of the name along with the lyn for a boy would throw me off. I don't want to name my kid after a patio.
This one isn't so weird anymore...it's actually gaining in popularity now, but, I taught middle school for a while and had a student one year named "Axel," he was on my roster for about a month before he showed up to school. Kid was a total nightmare and weirdly as it turned out...he had been in Brazil for the first month of school and his mother just decided she didn't feel like bringing him back until about mid October. Interestingly (and somewhat disturbingly) his father was some kind of serial murderer locked up in Brazilian prison...and that kid had some truly sociopathic tendencies/hate issues with females....so needless to say it was a very pleasant half year before he did something heinous to a female student and was removed from our school. When I was pregnant with DS #1, my husband really wanted to name him Axel and I just...couldn't. I told him I'd never be able to look at our child and not think of this student. So we compromised and DS 1 is Alex haha same letters different arrangement.
Over the course of my years teaching I've definitely had some interestingly named students. A couple of my favorites: Denezia (pronounced dee-nah-sha), Hijo (pronounced Hi-Ho), Female (pronounced fa-mal-lee), Papee, Merlin (like the wizard...and this was a female student), Leticja (pronounced Let-tick-ahh) Angeles (as in Los Angeles), Erleta, Delwin, Bugz (yes...bugs with a Z) and my personal favorite....Bitch. You read that right. This child's winner of a mother decided to name her Bitch. How social service didn't take her away based on that alone, I'll never know. I could probably think of a few more... but I'll cap it here. There's also a TON of names when you teach that you just can't use because of past students...so theres a few names that have been out of the running from the start (Colin, Justin, Frederick etc.)
@magnolia305 very carefully. haha I read her name off the roster as "beeotch?" and she acknowledged she was in the classroom by saying "My name is Bitch" and in that moment I was like oh god this is gonna be a rough year/class/interaction every single time. I can't in good conscious call this child bitch...my husband thought that maybe over time it would become fun to see her in hallway and be like "Hey Bitch!" I disagreed haha we ended up settling on the nickname "Bea" and the whole team called her "Bea" all year. At 8th grade graduation, meeting her mother answered SO. MANY. QUESTIONS.

I'd pay to see a video of that.

@eggplantface watching the principal of the school call her across the stage was pretty priceless "BITCH *last name*" and the crowd cheers. Very conflicting experience. Her mom was super odd but truly not even close to the worst parent I've ever had to deal with. We had a student that same year whose parents were supposed to attend graduation, never showed up and left the kid without a ride home cause the buses weren't coming that last day. I asked the principal if I could drive her home, did so and waited in the driveway as she banged on the door for about 5 mins before some intoxicated looking person opened the door and started yelling at her for waking him up. It absolutely broke my heart. These people may have given their child a horrible name that I would hope she will change for professional reasons someday but...at least they showed up for their kid when it mattered. I worked in urban education for 7 years before realizing how broken/awful the system kind of is and just wanting no part in it anymore. You take so much time away from your own family to be a surrogate parent to these kids and while it DOES feel good to get letters and facebook messages from kids thanking you every year for all that you did for them when they were in your class, I can't have that time with my own child back. So now I'm trying to do something that I enjoy but that also allows me the freedom to have a family life instead of work all day then grade all night and weekend plus spend all our money on supplies.
A parent board in Kansas City has a child named Kauffman. (Where the Royals play baseball.) Same family has a Maklin (Chiefs football player.) After we won the World Series in '15, I've seen so many babies with Royal for a middle name. Makes me cringe.
@sunflowermama428 My husband is at a two day conference in Boston tomorrow and Thursday... I think when he gets home if I can say it with a straight face, I might suggest Fenway as a name choice. Tell him I felt 'inspired' by his trip to the city tomorrow and suggest Fenway 'Love That Dirty Water' as the first and middle name. I'm sure I'll probably laugh and ruin the whole "are you for real?!" portion of the program but it's worth a shot. Since we already have a name picked, I'll tell him for the third kid (we've already kinda decided 2 is probably it) so shock value on TWO levels for him. One of my favorite pastimes is messing with my poor husband. lol
@Melissa9481 my mom has a very close friend whose daughter named their first son "Desmond" and his middle name is the last name of some pitcher for the Washington Nationals. They call him "Desi" for short. I'm not sure how I feel about the name choice but to each his own. In the end, it only matters if you as the parent love it!

I don't get parents naming their kids after sports figures based on fandom of a team. If you like the player, like you're a huge Tom Brady fan so you name your son Brady but are not necessarily a Patriots fan, then ok. But Jeremy Maclin played for the Eagles before the Chiefs, and he may go somewhere else after his stint there, so it's fleeting. At least Royal is the name of the team so it's forever associated with it.

When we had our son, we named him Emmett. Every nurse either asked us if it was after Emmitt Smith or if it was from Twighlight. Every nurse! It was not from either btw.

My big orange kitty is Emmett. But he's named after Back to the Future lol.

Yeah like Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox. The poor girl probably gets confused with Finley all the time.
