@justkeeptrying I guess I'm in the minority here but I got my NT results at our appointment from the tech. She just put the measurements into a formula with my blood test results from the week before and I got a printout with the risk number and without having to wait for a doctor.
@JamieK1882 ALthough It doesn't hurt to do both I doubt they are both covered. In CA It is definitely one or the other through our state program, also the info will be redundant. I'd get it in writing that both are covered before going in so you can be sure you wont be charged.
@JamieK1882 I had the same question a couple days ago. My doctor wanted me to still have both because I'm considered high-risk. My doctor said that although they are generally similar tests, they check for different things. I think if you ask them they'll let you know if both are necessary in your specific case. Good luck!
@Jamiek1882 While there can be some overlap with the blood test and the NT scan as they look for physical markers of Down syndrome, it can also detect physical things the blood test (which can only detect genetic abnormalities) can't such as neural tube problems or some abdominal issues. If your insurance will pay for it, I would do it.

@chasingroygbiv I'm about a year behind on mine my daughter will be getting her flu shot in about two weeks I believe at her 1 year dr appointment. I have an OB apt next Friday that I plan on asking for my flu shot at.
@chasingroygbiv I'm planning to ask for it at my next appointment in a couple weeks. I have two trade shows coming up in October and as much as I'll try to casually avoid shaking hands at the first one (and should definitely be showing at the second, giving me an obvious out) they're still germ fests. Normally I might wait until a little later, though.

@ShawnnaO You are lucky you're daughter is able to get hers then. Our clinic usually won't get them in until the end of Sept into Oct. DH, our son and I can get ours at the pharmacy (have to be 7+) and they are in, but I want it to last as long as possible. The year I got Influenza (so, so awful, BTW), I got it at the end of January and was out of commission for a full 7 days. With me due in the middle of Feb at peak Influenza time, I'm super nervous! Especially now that both kids are in school and will bring who knows what home!
@kiki75 Good to know! See, I would definitely be waiting so it would last through the "entire" flu season, but the kids head back to school this week and there already people dropping like flies from a nasty cold going around (albeit we don't know that it's Influenza). It's probably better to take the risk of waiting and it lasting longer, though.
@chasingroygbiv that's so weird. Our hospital will give you a flu shot any time of the year, you just need to ask for one. There's a couple weeks at the end of September that they do it for "free" but even when it's not those weeks, the insurance that we all have here (I live somewhere that just about everyone has the same insurance) pays for it anyway, so it's basically always free.
@ShawnnaO We have to wait each year for "this years" version since the strains change each year. Here's hoping this year's shot is a good match because 2013/2014's was NOT! Our town (and house) got SLAMMED with it! I never want to have it again. I always thought it was just like any other cold— nope. No way. No mistaking that! The doctor I initially saw said it was highly unlikely that I had it because I didn't have a cough, but sent me down for the nose swab anyway. Positive alright. And then the cough came. DD was 8 months old and I remember crawling to her crib to get her because I didn't have the strength to walk. I propped myself against her wall to nurse her and cried and cried and cried. Finally DH came home and took the next 2 days off. So awful.
I clothed my son from 10 months on. This time I'll start from the get go. I'm using thirsty duo wrap size 1 covers with green mountain prefolds (organic cotton)
@chasingroygbiv I don't think they start distribution of this year's strain until early October and I plan on getting it ASAP. I can't imagine getting the flu while already feeling so crappy. I have an OB apt on the 15th so I plan on clearing it with the doc then.
I talked to our pharmacy last week and they had just received this year's flu shots. They told me that the shot will cover you all year. They had trouble coding it for my insurance, otherwise I would have gotten it then. They called later that day and said it's straitened out but I haven't had a chance to go back.
DD just got her flu shot at her annual check up on Friday. DS will get his at his annual in October, and DH got his last week Thursday. I'll get mine whenever my clinic brings it in, which I think is coming up at the end of September. I didn't get one last year, and I ended up being fine, but I prefer to err on the side of caution especially when pregnant. I had a "milder" case of influenza B 2 years ago, and even at that, I was DOWN for the count. It was horrendous for a few days, but didn't last as long as my doctor said it could have if I hadn't received the flu shot. I can't imagine getting it while pregnant, and since I work in schools, germs are entirely, unavoidably, everywhere.
@chasingroygbiv I asked about a flu shot at my last OB appt a couple of weeks ago, and she said I should get it at my next appt (9/22). Definitely getting it because I had the flu a couple of years ago and actually, really, truly thought I was going to die. No thank you.
@JamieK1882 and @ladybugsmom Another answer about NIPT/NT Scan (at least for my area of the US).
My 1st pregnancy I did the NT scan, and my results came back with a higher risk than anticipated for my profile (but not in the high risk category). I'm making up numbers, but lets say 1/500 was expected, 1/200 was high risk, I had something like 1/350. Due to those results, I was able to get NIPT completely covered by insurance (but they said beforehand it wasn't a slam dunk for coverage since I wasn't technically high risk).
This time around, I originally wanted to just go for the NIPT, and was told if I do NIPT they don't do the NT scan on top of it. It's one or the other, unless you do NT scan first and the results aren't great.Timing wise, it ended up not making sense to do NIPT (since I'm still low risk) so I'm doing NT scan.
@justkeeptrying This pregnancy, I got the option of doing my blood work ahead of the NT scan (blood was drawn 8/28) and my NT scan is tomorrow. They said the Dr will go over all my results at the scan since the blood was drawn earlier. 1st time that wasn't offered (but I was also traveling so logistically I couldn't), so I ended up waiting about a week for a phone call for the results.
@day38 that's interesting.... my doc told me that I had to have my NT scan first and then blood work but that they absolutely 100% had to be done on the same day....
I wonder why there is a variation in how our tests were run?
@bb3vj3n@day38 I'm in CA and I was told to get blood test # 1 at least 1 full week before the NT and the 2nd blood test ~ week 16-17. It could definitely vary regionally, based on the different instructions it seems many of us are getting.
I wasn't even told about a blood test...and I'm 11+1 today and still haven't been told when my NT scan is. Ugh!!!! I have an OB appointment Friday and will be following up with lots of questions.
@vflux33@day38 I'm in Canada... so it could be regional I guess
@justkeeptrying my doctor gave me the requisitions at my 9 weeks appointment. you are just about within the window to get your testing done ( I think the earliest they will do it is 11+3). I wouldn't stress.... you still have so much time but i would absolutely bring it up at your appointment this week. For those like us with PGAL Brain - I actually think it's better to hold off on the test as long as you can. if you can wait until that 12-13 weeks mark - it gives a lot of piece of mind that baby is ok as you finish your first tri. Atleast that's how I felt
@justkeeptrying they "ordered" my tests at my initial appointment - 8 weeks, but I wasn't actually able to schedule until I had my dating scan to confirm dates. I think doing the bloodwork ahead of time is not typical - I didn't even know that was an option 3 years ago. If it's not scheduled beforehand, they do it at the same appointment as the ultrasound.
You're still within the window for the scan - it's done between 11 and 14 weeks (so last day is 13w6d). From what I've heard scheduling things in Canada is a lot more frustrating than here, if you don't want to wait until Friday maybe you can call the office to try to get answers?
@day38, at my last appointment my OB got the paperwork ready and asked her nurse to send it off. She said it would be scheduled for next week (when I'm 12 weeks). So I'm just worried because normally we'd get a letter in the mail saying when it is. I don't want them to call me the day of because I'll need to arrange childcare in advance since I can't take DS to the ultrasound.
@bb3vj3n, totally! Especially since we normally don't get the NT scan. The only reason I'm getting it this time is *TW* my last baby didn't survive because of Gastroschisis. I was told the NT scan should show if this is the case for this baby or not *End TW*
@justkeeptrying I have never had the office schedule my appointments for me. they always just give the Paperwork and I schedule with the labs myself. I know you are in Ontario also (I think) ... perhaps if you prefer to have a little more control over your appointments - you could ask for the same?
also - totally off topic, but I'm worried we've lost scotia girl.... should we restart our Canadian check in?
@bb3vj3n, I'm in Manitoba actually. Really? We've never been able to schedule ourselves. We can take requisitions to the lab. But for the actual ultrasounds that has to go through the hospital.
And yes, we should start the check in again. I'm sorry if we've lost her That makes me so sad.
@chasingroygbiv I'm signed up to get my flu shot in two weeks. Flu season can start early- not worth the risk of exposure, imo!
I'm also going to ask if I can get the TDAP shot (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (or whooping cough)), earlier in pregnancy, as my brother's first baby is due in October, and I don't want to risk anything around his baby either. I can't think of the last time I got a TDAP (maybe I stepped on a nail in high school?), and I know they last a decade, but there's no chance mine is still up to date.
@justkeeptrying I know you just offered to pick up the PGAL thread so I can restart the CDN.
also yes... I schedule everything myself. I don't do it at the hospital though as we have so many alternatives and private labs here. if you are in a smaller community I could understand if it's not the same.
I don't know why I thought you were in the same province. I know there is another Ontario mama in here - I just can't remember who.
@bb3vj3n, oops! Sorry! I just started it. But you can do it from now on!
I'm in Winnipeg. But all our ultrasounds are only done in hospital unless you're paying privately at a Babymoon place. But that wouldn't be where we'd have any medical appointments, it's just for fun. Crazy how different it is even province to province.

You'll get Tdap in 3rd trimester - that gives your baby the strongest antibody boost, since they can't get DTaP until 6 months. It's a relatively new recommendation (about 5 years), and is covered by insurance. And you get it with every pregnancy (so I'll wind up having four shots in 5 years )
