@ariz17 NOW. lol Nobody told us that and when I was in the hospital, I was informed that they would not release us until we had a confirmed pediatrician and we had to make an initial appointment with them. Imagine our surprise the day before Christmas Eve and our frustration, trying to find one that was open and would schedule us in the week of Christmas.
So now. Now, now, now. haha

@ariz17 Have your ped picked out before you go into labor! My twins were born at 33 weeks and I had not decided at that point. We had a month in the NICU, and I literally did not decide until they were 28(?) days old. The nurses told me that we couldn't be released without a ped lined up. I was stuck emailing a co-worker who was the only person I knew in the area who had kids and just used his ped. Turns out his ped was great and had actually been recommended to their family by a NICU nurse (which they technically were not allowed to do). Don't be like me.
So, based on my experience, I would say to start getting recommendations now and to start making calls or doing visits at the beginning of third trimester.
I haven't seen this topic come up elsewhere, so it may be a good idea to start a thread on picking out a pediatrician - when, what questions to ask, etc. Thoughts from others?

@ariz17 i would start looking now. no harm in that. for me i knew exactly who i wanted but sometimes they have wait lists etc. get referrals from friends!
**type A planner alert** for DD2 not that i ended up needing it but i made an "on call" calendar. for the last month of pregnancy. i have family around but they all have crazy schedules. so i just did a microsoft office calendar and filled each person in on days that coordinate with their schedule. so each day they had they were on call from 12-midnight to 12-midnight. this meant they were to get DD1 from DC or i would need to drop her off MOTN. that way it gave them a heads up. and i knew where to go in the event i went into labor.
Ok thanks @beezeemarie@canonmom413 that makes me feel a little bit better for some reason, maybe because at the very least, at least the sensation will be somewhat familiar.
Eta: and having at least a slight idea of what to expect, even at a way scaled down level, is comforting!
@bluejeanbabi05 it's a little different, too, in that the pain comes in waves. You can clearly feel it peaking mid-contraction. And you can feel your ute tighten. But I'd say it's def the same sensation/pain.

@bluejeanbabi05 cramps that are just uncomfortable and tightening around your belly are harmless little contractions.
Pains that leave you unable to talk through them are labor contractions. I know it's so hard to just take a random stranger's advice, but when I say you will know, I promise you will know. I thought I was one of those unicorns without a painful labor. I was so, so, silly. Uncomfortable contractions are not labor. Write that down and put it on your bathroom mirror and save yourself a trip to L&D in a few months

With my daughter, had my water not broken, I would not have guessed I was in labor. I had bad cramping in my back. Sometimes I feel like the back labor was worse. So you won't always just feel uterus contractions up front.

Yeah, I guess I should have clarified. Once my water broke, all bets were off and I was dying. Before my water broke, contractions hurt, but not that intense.

@carrie2018 agree! Before water breaking, totally manageable. After water breaking, total different story. It was like one long neverending contraction.

Really? Did your water break on your own or did the doctors do it? Mine just felt like a little (non-painful) "pop" at the front of my uterus when I sat down and a little stream of liquid. But it took about 15 minutes after that for the contractions to turn intense.

My water wasn't broken until minutes before my last two kids were born. You can definitely deal with the insanely intense hard labor without your water breaking
I truly believe that having the midwife break my water with my son is what caused my vbac to fail. Everything was going well up to that point. I even dilated and started pushing but his head was turned funny and he wouldn't come out. When the csection was done, we saw he had a huge gauge on the top of his head from the hook she used to break the water. Of course I can never be sure but it always made me wonder if when she cut his head his reflex was to move his head and that's the position he stayed in.
My initial labor felt like very mild period cramps. It did not get intense until the pitocin started.
There are contractions, then there are contractions with cervical changes. homestly if my water hadn't broken, I would have just drank water and laid down because my 'contractions' were so mild.
Actually even the water breaking was a minor issue, I went thru slightly more pads than usual. When I made it to L&D, I honestly thought they would turn us around.
so my advice, don't feel bad about getting things checked out. Better safe than sorry.
My labor started with my water breaking, I woke up to go bathroom and when I stood up it felt like I peed my pants which would not have even surprised me. I went to the bathroom and when I stood up had another huge gush. I was obviously very hard to convince because I went and laid in bed for awhile and stood back up again to check before I even bothered waking DH up. My OB had joked at my last appointment that it's never like the movies where your water breaks so you know you're in labor of course I would be the one who's labor starts like that.
Ok random ? here. so do contractions feel like horrible cramps x100000 or a completely different sensation?
I was induced without going into natural labour and it felt like the worsts cramps EVER. It was all through my back and tummy. However, inducing from the get go is different to natural labour.
