I've been avoiding deli meats - but I'm not a huge deli meats person anyway. However, there's an AMAZING deli back home that bakes their own bread, and makes the most delicious sandwiches. I have been craving a Gerry Garcia (roast beef and bacon) from that place for monnnnnnnnnnths. My step dad asked me if I needed anything, and I only half jokingly said he could overnight me a couple of those sandwiches. We're going home in July for a few days, so I will be getting at least two (though I will probably sub out the sprouts, since we're not supposed to have those either).
Thankfully the caf here at work roasts a turkey every day, so there's always fresh turkey if I want a sandwich.
Is firehouse just cold subs or do they have warm ones. We we have one in town but I have never been.
Maybe that that is a dumb question given the name.
Firehouse steams their meat. It's really good. It's called firehouse because they support Firemen and Firestations/houses all across the country. Most are decorated inside with pictures and items from the local firehouse.
So I read this the other day.... and then I ate a sub from my favorite local deli. It was glorious!
Listeria Hysteria Listeria monocytogenes is
the big bad bacteria that you want to avoid during pregnancy, mainly
because it can cross the placental barrier and infect the fetus, which
can result in miscarriage or fetal death.
True,
pregnant women are about 18 times more likely to get listeria than the
non-pregnant, but EVEN SO, it is EXTREMELY rare, infecting about 50-100
per million (or, 1 in 10,000) for those with a bun in the oven (3 to 5
per million without).
For comparison sake, your lifetime chance of dying in a car accident is about 1 in 500.
It should also be noted that most listeria infections in pregnancy occur in the 3rd trimester, when suppression of Th1-mediated immunity is at its maximum.
The highest risk foods for listeria are preserved fish (lox and stuff), cheese from unpasteurized milk, deli meats, pate (pa-TAAAAAY), and undercooked hot dogs.
But wait, it's not that simple! The latest nasty outbreak of Listeria in 2011 came from a single cantaloupe farm. Yes, cantaloupe. You can pretty much get it from any raw food, including produce. So if you are very risk-averse, say goodbye to your salads as well.
Bottom line: Listeria
is rare but could be deadly for an unborn baby. You can get it from
almost anything that's uncooked, but perhaps with those kind of odds,
you should worry more about your driving than your turkey sandwich.

I do that even when I'm not pregnant. I normally just swipe a finger to check for deodorant residue.
Pregnancy brain is bad over here today too. I met a friend for lunch about two hours ago. It wasn't until I was putting on mascara only to find I already had it on that I realized I had done my whole routine twice...two deodorant applications, brushed my teeth twice, did my make up twice, etc.. My poor brain. I hope all my smarts are going to LO and he's really smart, because this pregnancy is making me dumb.

That actually reminds me... did y'all see the study they did that said babies get almost all of their intelligence form their moms?
@LosAngelesMama That was helpful to keep things in perspective -- thanks. Reminds me of Emily Oster's book. No one told me about pate and I had a lot in France... oh well. I think the important thing is not eating at a sketchy place or something off the "no-no list" at certain street food locations, or anywhere you might not feel comfortable or question whether someone's been washed. Such tiny odds!
@margareth Exactly! I felt relieved after reading it too. After reading that I was like okay... everything is a risk... and now I can continue eating cold subs! yum!
it's weird... the thought of jimmy john's makes me ill still... although i can handle other sub places... i think i need to try firehouse subs

Was anyone who had 2 miscarriages considered high risk in this pregnancy, and told not to have sex? I was never told by my doctor to abstain, but it's still in the back of my brain. I also see a new doctor everytime at this practice, and it doesn't ease my fears when I have to explain things to them about my history, that I feel like they should be able to read in my chart by now. I should have just asked by now, but my next appointment isn't for two more weeks, and it's been weighing on my brain lately. I know I'm past the first trimester, but I've just had a lot of miscarriage anxiety come up this week as my time hop decided to show me my pregnancy test picture from the first baby I miscarried back in May last year.

I'm so sorry you're having this anxiety. I hope it passes quickly for you. I am sending you positive and rainbow-filled thoughts ❤️
I also had 2 miscarriages and I just assumed they would consider me high-risk. I wanted to reassure you that I was completely wrong, and I have been treated as a a normal pregnant person for the duration of this pregnancy (15w today). The RE we were seeing did not bat an eye when I said I was planning to use a midwife for prenatal care. Nobody in the midwifery practice has told me to do anything different because of the losses. They were just extra-patient with me in the early weeks when I was nervous. PGAL is so tricky when everything seems normal but your brain makes you worry nonetheless. I have been nervous about sex due to PGAL brain also--worried I would bleed and then freak out. It's a work in progress.
I know every pregnancy is different but I'm guessing that if the dr hasn't said anything to you about abstaining, it's probably because there is nothing to say, and you and your partner should enjoy each other
@divinemsm620 Thank you, that really helps to hear, I'm definitely going to bring it up at my next appointment just to make sure, but it gives me some peace of mind for the next 2 weeks.
@heatherwilson321 I have had more than 2 MCs and am high risk. My MFM and OB haven't said to do anything different. They said they will basically continue to treat this as a normal pregnancy unless a problem arises. I had to do extra glucose testing due to high risk, but I am not restricted from doing things other pregnant women are normally allowed to do.
@heatherwilson321 I have had two loss. My doctor/re said that once I made it past 11 weeks I am the same as a normal pregnancy. At nine weeks he said that sex was fine and would not cause any problems. i can relate to the anxiety pgal brain is real and awful. I still worry about losing this baby and I am at 14w5. At out last appointment it took the doctor longer to find her heartbeat and I started crying when they found it bc I was freaking out. But the keep telling me it the baby looks good.
@heatherwilson321 where I live, you're not "high risk" (ie: no extra u/s, no early blood work or betas, etc) until you've had 3 consecutive m/c. I do believe it's different depending on where you live, so American standards might be different.

@BigBadWolf12 It's the same here in America- you're not considered high risk until you've had three miscarriages (unless of course there are other extenuating circumstances).
@mrs_tacos I have American friends (on here) who have had betas and multiple u/s, even with 'only' having one loss previously, without a diagnosis on the cause of the loss. I asked for that and they said no to anything other than one dating ultrasound and the anatomy scan. They won't even check heart beat here until 24 + weeks (I asked for that too...literally ANYTHING to calm my nerves would be great right now.)

That seems ridiculous. Why would it hurt to check the heartbeat? My Dr doesn't consider you high risk until three losses, but when I requested an HCG/progesterone check they were happy to do it.
@hollygolightly09 the midwife said "they can't check heartbeat until at least 24 weeks" so a medical friend on here (in response to my initial complaining ) said they probably don't use dopplers since that's around the time a regular stethoscope can pick up fetal heartrate. I asked specifically for HCG check and/or progesterone check, and they said "no, just see how it goes and come back in a few weeks ifyou're still pregnant" uhm, thanks...that helps my nerves. Another midwife wouldn't even say I 'was pregnant' she just kept saying I 'had pregnancy hormones, but it was too early to tell' (while looking at a positive pee stick I had just done...) not happy, and definitely holding a bit of a grudge

@BigBadWolf12 There are a lot of reasons doctors in the US do betas an a few extra ultrasounds other than being considered high risk, including peace of mind and previous issues with infertility. I had both in the beginning because the severe tilt of my uterus made it hard to get a dating ultrasound, or even see anything at all in the beginning.
It seems crazy that they can't do anything to reassure you! Do you have other doctor/midwife options, or are you pretty much stuck with what you already have? Can you order a home doppler to find the heartbeat on your own? I would hold a grudge too if someone said those things to me! How many pregnancy hormones do you have to have before she'd consider you really pregnant?
@BigBadWolf12 oh my gosh that sounds terrible.. i would literally be a wreck.. i'm so sorry. I was lucky and got my spontaneous BFP after some testing with an RE.. so she tracked me for the first 11 weeks which means I got beta blood draws and biweekly ultrasounds for that period of time.. even then i was (and still am) so filled with anxiety.. i can't imagine they not doing anything at all to help reassure you
although i've avoided a home doppler myself because I know i would abuse the heck out of it, i would def strongly consider one if the dr wasn't checking for a heartbeat yet
