Resurrecting this thread in case any new people want to join the baby name fun! Also...I've been thinking about a name and wondering if it's too "out there." What do you think of Lark? I have a DD named Rose, so I kind of like the idea of them both being nature names. I also love one syllable, easy to spell and pronounce names, but is it too unusual? Not wearable? I like how refreshing and upbeat it sounds (happy as a lark, etc.) but I'm not sure what other people would think of it.
I think it's up to you, but I like it. People are always going to comment on baby names. Case in point, my sister's daughter is named Jade. She's currently pregnant with a boy and apparently is wavering between Volcano and something I don't remember, but is equally oddball. I don't think I'll say anything to her, but I can't imagine naming a kid that. DH and I have been doing what basically amounts to a "three name call" test. Like, "Sarah Jane Smith, get your butt out of the street!" That sort of thing. If things sounds bizarre, we nix them.
We had a list of baby names on my phone, but it went missing when I had to restore my phone from factory settings. Neither of us could remember what all of them were, but we really like Charlotte and Kaylee for girls, and James for a boy, with my best friend's name as the middle. He tends to like cowboy-ish names for boys, while I like more classic stuff, like Jacob and Daniel.
@maureenmce: At first I really didn't like it. Now it's kind of growing on me. Would you use it for either sex? Either way, I agree with dreamscapes, pick what you like! @dreamscapes_: Can you give an example of a cowboy-ish name? As in Wyatt or Colt?
@notthefather Dillon, Colton, Colt, things like that. I can't remember a lot of them and I asked him, but he says that when I reject things, he basically pushes them out of his mind, so he can't remember them either, lol.
@dreamscapes_ Yes, saying it out loud is always a good test! Not sure if Lark passes that one, but I'll keep it on my maybe list for now. I definitely have other names I like more, but DH is like, obsessed with it for some reason, so I'll give it a chance, haha.
I currently love the name Kate. I like Tucker, Cooper, Amelia, Lilly, and Mia. I haven't really thought it in great detail, it's such a hard decision! DH loves the name "Shaw" for a boy. He thinks that's a good Southern name and he loves holding strong to Southern roots. I'm on the fence about it, but it's growing on me.
Do you have a particular naming style? I have a very basic name, Leann, but SO many people spell it wrong and... say it wrong. So, when naming our child I don't want anything that people will say wrong for their lives and if we decide to visit some random state I want them to be able to find a keychain with their name on it. lol If we have a son his middle name will be Louis after DH's middle name. His mother had the tradition that the first female in the family would have the middle name "Lois". MIL never had a girl so when she knew DH was her last child she decided give him Louis, a play on Lois.
Are there any names you love but you can't use for whatever reason?
I have always LOVED the name Emma, but that was DH "first" girlfriend so, big fat no on naming our child that.
I love the ideas everyone is coming up with for discussion topics!
@gspmom21, Kate is such a gorgeous classic. And Shaw is cool, like the playwright George Bernard Shaw. It's also the name of a residence hall at Michigan State University.
@gspmom21 Cooper! That was another one my husband liked that I vetoed. It's a nice name, but I don't like it with our last name (it has the same final syllable, which I didn't want). Isn't it weird when people get simple, incredibly basic names wrong? My name is Dana. Four letters, three of which are the same. I get called Diana, Donna, Danna, Duna, Dara, Dena, Diane, Danny... It's Day-nuh. Not that hard. The only people who get a pass in my opinion are those whose first language is not English. Anyway! Kate is a beautiful name, I've always loved that name.
I forgot about the "names we can't use" one! There are some I can't think of right now (it's been a very long day), but one of my favorite girl names ever is Sarah. Unfortunately, that's also the name of one of my cousins, whom I don't really get along with and don't want relatives to think I named my child after (her mom also named her youngest son, who is my age, my older brother's name).
Tonight I just learned that the "irish phoenix" called an "Augurey" (which I had previously spelled "Augury" as a potential baby name. Red/dark haired twins as Phoenix/Augury) is entirely made up by JK Rowling. I thought it was real Irish folklore! Oops. I was looking it up to see if it was Scottish too (or general celtic) and not just irish, and from what I can tell it is a Harry Potter thing. At least, I can't find any other references to it...
Wanted to share because I felt tricked by that. I guess all folklore is made up at some point, so I'm not too hurt by it.
I definitely do have names picked out, but at the same time I'm open to the possibility of what my baby's name "feels" like, if that makes sense.
For a boy, I like Anderson John A. DH's initials are AJA, and "John" is a family middle name, so I figure why not go for an A first name too? For a girl, DH really likes the name "Eve", but I would like to have a longer name, so we are thinking Evelyn (and we may call her Eve) Michelle (after my mom) A.
I love talking about names! I'm a teacher and one of my first homework assignments for my students each year is "History of your Name" where the kids tell me about their names (i.e. Named after someone, name meaning, etc).
DS is the fourth and I love his name. If we're blessed with a second child I'm almost hoping for a girl. I want to name her Clara after my great grandmother. She owned a restaurant and everyone loved her! I don't know what I would use for her middle name but the family connection along with the classic feel is something I love!
@tumbleweed It's still pretty! If you're happy with it, there's nothing wrong with it. I totally get that, though. @JennyColada That absolutely makes sense, to be open to how the baby name "feels" when they're in front of you. I've already told my DH that we can be completely set on the name, but once the kid is in my arms, if it's not right, it's not right. I like the idea of keeping your DH's initials, and Evelyn Michelle is beautiful! @JNCPro3130 I like the project you have your students do. That sounds really cool! Clara is a beautiful name, and I love the family history there
@maureenmce - Lark isn't my style, but I can dig it. For a baby girl or boy or both? I think it would work well for both, personally.
@JennyColada DH is an AJA and I love it. If we have enough girls will name her after him, so she'd be AJA, too. Not gonna like, it's weird to see Anderson as a first name, because I'm so used to it as a last name (and the surname as a first name isn't my style) but I can get behind it.
Our names are basically set. Kelly for a boy and Evelyn for a girl. I'd call her Ev though!
if we somehow end up with multiples, I'd add Ola and Brynn as potential girl names and Brooks as a potential boy name. Though I typically try to avoid names than end in A since our last name starts with an A!
Can I resurrect this post again? I think I'm one of a couple new people...and I just love talking about names so even if no one sees this I'm entertaining myself!
Do you have a top 5 list of baby names? Or more? -- I have a long list that I keep in my phone so I don't forget but I'll spare you all of them. I would say top 5 right now are: GIRLS - Katherine (family name - possible nn Kay); Dorothea (variation on my grandmother's name - possible nn Dorie or Dot??); Beatrice (nn Bea); Greta; Mae BOYS - Nash; Lawton - family name on SO's side; Neil; Ames; Seth
Do you have a particular naming style? -- Fairly classic, not too common/trendy (for example I love Cora but I think it seems to be trending right now?); I like the idea of using family names for at least the middle if not the first name. Also I think it would need to be fairly short or have a short nickname b/c the last name is kind of long.
Are there any names you love but you can't use for whatever reason? -- SO has a negative association with Alma, one of my favorite names ever!
@maureenmce I am kind of digging Lark. It's NMS but I think it's a good strong name and uncommon. I say put it on that list I love everyone's name idea Do you have a top 5 list of baby names? Or more? We have a girls name picked out from what I was pregnant with DS. Gabriella Nicole, although I would like to tie the middle name to one of my parents so that will likely change. Is Gabriella Raylee to much of a mouth full? DS is Corban Lee, Lee is a family name on DH side. I dread having another boy b/c naming Corban wasn't easy(see story below). But ultimately we chose Corban for it's meaning. And it has to be spelled with and A because some research showed a different meaning when spelled with an I.
Do you have a particular naming style? The first name needs/has to have a Biblical/faith tie of some sort. Although I'm not a big fan of many of the common straight Biblical names.
Are there any names you love but you can't use for whatever reason? So this is somewhat of a sore subject for me, here's my story. So before we were even pregnant and from about the time we started discussing kids DH had always been saying if he had another son his name would be Caleb. He son's name is Joshua and there is a link to their stories in the Bible. So I was always set on that and when I got pregnant I just "knew" it was a boy and in my mind I started calling him Caleb. We found out the sex at 22 weeks and at week 24 DH came to me and said we can't call him Caleb. He said his ex had a m/c and he doesn't remember if they named it or not but it they did it would have been Caleb. He didn't want to risk this so we took it off the table. While I completely understood it was really difficult for me and I cried for a couple weeks over it b/c I had been calling him Caleb for so long already. Otherwise, there are a couple names due to ex's, and his ex's family that are off the table.
@kindbytealikat - Oh that's disappointing about Caleb, that's a great name! I look at Nameberry a lot (way too much) and there are some interesting, slightly more unique Biblical names there that you don't hear as often - they have a list called Cool Bible Baby Names and maybe a few more lists like that too.
I need to look at that! I love biblical male names!
@whitealbum29 No harm in resurrecting the post! I like the names you guys have on your list, especially Katherine. That's actually on ours, but with a C.
@kindbytealikat I'm sorry you couldn't name your son Caleb, especially after essentially naming him that in your own mind If you don't mind my asking, why do the names have to have a Biblical tie?
@JNCPro3130@dreamscapes_ Yes Katherine/Catherine is such a beautiful/cool classic name! It's my mom's name and she goes by Kate which is probably my favorite of the nicknames.
@dreamscapes_ Our stories of faith are very important to be DH and I and we want our childrens names to represent that. For instance Corban mean a gift to God. Gabriella is a spin of Gabriel and important archangel in the Bible. So they don't have to be Biblical names but have a Biblical/faith tie. I find this an easier task with Girls names than boys LOL
@whitealbum29, the classic names are more my style. DS is John which isn't classic like Edward or Henry, but I do like that it isn't widely used. He's 2 and came home the other day saying, "I'm Johnny." UGH. I didn't think there were nicknames for single syllable names, but I'm not a fan of Johnny. I'm not sure who was calling him Johnny, but I said, "No, Baby. Your name is John".
@JNCPro3130 My dad's name is John, and when he was a kid, the nuns at his school called him Johnny. Not excusing it, just saying that happened to my dad as well.
@JNCPro3130 I agree not a fan of nicknames, although I know Gabriella will have one because it's long. I'll push for Ella. I really don't understand lengthing to make a nickname
Soo many names on the no-no list My 5 big name regrets: 1. An ex, Elias.. I wrote his name down for future baby naming the day I met him. Greatest name ever. Oh well. 2. Sadie, loved since childhood, but Elias had 2 Sadie-exes so the magic won't work... seriously... who's named Sadie!? 3. Fast foward to my current life: Fiance just told me he'd like to honor a best friend who recently passed. I'm flabbergasted. He can tell me they were just friends till he's blue in the face, but my digital spy skills (now put to rest for sake of relationship) tell me they had "benefits" prior to meeting me. He's not pushing her name, but I'm still super internally peeved. 4. Melody, second on my list. I didn't realize this was his best friend's daughter's name (yes, same friend from 3). He's vetoed it... 5....plus he's vetoed Lucy, my number one.
There's few names I've thought right for My Baby. As a writer, I'm in Love with names. As a teacher, my choices are minimized. I'm upset that the few I've fallen head-over-heels with are impermissible.
@bri5555 my DH also just recently vetoed Lucy!! I love it, think it's classic, plus I love I Love Lucy. He thinks "it's too plain." *insert eye roll here* Also, I'm curious...what was the friends name?? You totally don't have to share if you don't want to though!
@CecilB93 Too plain! No way! He did manage to convince me against Lucy tho since he pointed out that it could be sexualized to juicy Lucy... which I don't think would matter except that her last name also lends itself to sexualization... The friend's name I don't think should be mentioned online out of respect. I would not have chosen it either way because... well you just know when a name is not the one. There are so many Beautiful names!... that just aren't My baby's name... you know?
Love names! I could name more children than I could ever stand to actually have! DD is Charlotte Marie.
Do you have a top 5 list of baby names? Or more? Girls: Harper, Juniper, Rory, Quinn, Reese Boys: Griffin (Finn), Abel, Carter, Cooper, Asher Do you have a particular naming style? I think popular/classic not sure. We definitely don't tend to go for super uncommon names but we also hate names that are mispelled or super made up like Kynsleigh, etc. So I'd say on trend because they are more popular than others but still with a classic/antiquey/easily spelled and read way. I'd love to use Reese for our next if a girl but my nephew/godson is Reese so it's off limits. I love Rory too but as well as Quinn but feel like both would need to be NN in our set, especially since we call my Charlotte, Charlie. Next will likely be Griffin Ryan or Harper Evelyn/Reese.

I think popular/classic not sure. We definitely don't tend to go for super uncommon names but we also hate names that are mispelled or super made up like Kynsleigh, etc. So I'd say on trend because they are more popular than others but still with a classic/antiquey/easily spelled and read way.
