@starphish18 , ohhh, thanks!! It's funny because one of my co-workers who clearly doesn't think Estelle is the cats meow has suggested Stella to me no less than 5 times...like, gee! I hadn't thought of that! Not that it isn't a pretty name, but we obviously didn't pick it...
@kipperoo we got dumb questions all the time about my dd. Her name is violet and multiple people asked what we would call her..... How about her name?!? My grandma kept saying why dont you call her by her middle name and when we said no, were going to call her by her name, she insisted she would call her by her middle. So rude.
@hp_momma , I've heard Essie, Tess (?), and Elle as proposed nicknames...I'm like, call her what you want, but we will be calling her Estelle.
Has your brother always gone by Trey?? That is so funny. I think you could get away with a lot more in terms of naming back in the 80s/early 90s before the internet exploded.
My husband is hilariously named after his dad (first name that he doesn't use) and his middle name is after his dad's gay lover (who he is now married to that his mom thought was just a really good friend living in their basement at the time of naming...story for another day)...and he goes by the nickname of that middle name. We were flying out of the country 8 or 9 years ago and discovered at the airport that he had booked his flight ticket under his NICKNAME...seriously, buddy? You grew up using a nickname of your middle name as a first name, but didn't think to book your airline ticket to match your GD passport??
@Kipperoo Woa. That is quite the story and I'm super intrigued now! Ha.
Yes, my brother has gone by Trey since birth! Apparently my mom refused to call him Harold so that was their compromise. My dad goes by his middle name so they couldn't call him that either. And my grandpa who started it all went by Hal (who actually my Halle is named after) So not a single Harold in the bunch! I joke with my brother and SIL on what they will call their future son because my brother is adamant on carrying on the name, maybe Quatro for four?!

My husband['s] ... middle name is after his dad's gay lover (who he is now married to that his mom thought was just a really good friend living in their basement at the time of naming...story for another day)...
I enjoy a nickname that can be used, but nothing off the wall. We used to have patients who would be named stuff like "Harold Brewer" but then would go by "john". Uh, what? My Dad was always called "Butch" growing up. No idea why, his name is nothing along those lines. With both our boy and girl name we have nicknames we'd use.
True story: a much older, second/third/something cousin on an extended side of the family is named Richard. He goes by the once popular nickname for that; Dick. Problem is his last name is also Dick (very unfortunate last name). So he literally is Dick Dick. It's always the family joke when he is around but I can't imagine what his parents were thinking!

I am not big on the 100% use of a nickname as a name, but I am not against shortening a name for use around the house. I am very guilty of using a completely different pet name for DS (Barry, which isn't even remotely close to his name) and I think that could be because his name is my maiden name and I am still getting used to it.
I have the ones read by Jim Dale. I'm super picky about audio books, and I'm in love with his version! I may listen to them while doing house work ALL THE TIME!
Ugh! I just finished re-reading/ listening to HP (finished yesterday) and I absolutely HATE Jim Dale. I love audiobooks for driving and yard work but really struggled with listening to them while he was reading. He did too many Scottish accents and others that I had formed in my head that did not go at all.
I love HP and could read and re-read it all day long. I cannot wait to start reading it to DD and I hope she wont' take off reading ahead without me.
50 Shades: poorly written, lots of ridiculous controlling boyfriend behavior, and yet very slightly entertaining.
Kardashians: my guilty pleasure. But I really don't like any of them. I just cant stop watching the trainwreck. And I can't fault them for making money. They are good at it.
I like eggs when I'm not pregnant with GD. With GD i have to eat them every G-D day. I'm so over it.
I need the gay lover story.
I know several Treys who are actually IIIs. That one doesn't bother me. But I know a poor kid who is a II and they call him Deuce. Gross. Also, my apparent UO is that I love nicknames. I plan my kids names around potential nns. Not just the ones I might use, but what other people might use. I don't quite get random adults giving kids nns when it's not their kid. I'm thinking of the random nns that spring up in childhood or hs. I think it's sweet (unless it's for bullying) when someone's friends give them a nickname that sticks. It's not always predictable. My HS friends called me a nickname that was my last name spelled backwards. I still have people call me it to this day. My dog and cat each have about 25 nns. DD, on the other hand, doesn't, but I sometimes call her by her first initial.
I also judge anyone who declines any widely available and recommended vaccine without a medical reason (like an allergy). The science is clear. And now I'll go dive in to that shiny vaccine thread. I cannot wait!
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot Aw, yes! I'm so excited to read HP to my future children, as well. They are the only books I left on the otherwise-empty bookshelf in the nursery.
@Louise_Belcher , @WombThereItIs , @hp_momma , @RainyDays86 , @starphish18 , plus anyone else I missed...hahaha...I guess I can't get away without telling the story (even though the punchline has already been given). MIL and FIL were once married, and very Mormon. Before they were married, FIL had met a very nice Mormon missionary during his time in grad school who was significantly younger than him (there is a 15ish year age gap) and they became "friends". After FIL and MIL got married, they moved to Utah and had DH's older sister. Missionary friend got into law school at BYU and moved in with the family, living in the basement. They were all good little Mormon friends. Then along came DH...when deciding on a name, FIL suggested good friend in the basement, MIL agreed. Fast forward a few years, basement friend is still living there (finishing law school) and MIL becomes suspicious and hires a PI to follow them to Vegas on a "boys weekend" and their cover was blown. So, FIL and MIL got divorced, MIL remarried another Mormon man, FIL totally abandoned the religion and continued living with basement friend. They bought houses across the street from each other and DH grew up 50/50 splitting time and still just thinking that his dad lived with a friend that he happened to be named after who lived in the basement. When I met DH in high school, I told him he was crazy and that his dad was CLEARLY involved somehow with this man...his dad didn't come out to DH and his sister until DH was in college (which is crazy and sad, but Utah is not a very forgiving state for that kinda thing). And now FIL and other FIL are happily married and living in Colorado.
ETA: And now DS is named after friend in the basement in effect, because his middle name is the same as DS (as I mentioned before, DS goes by a nickname of his middle name).
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot@starphish18 I can't wait to read HP to DS. I feel like getting to watch him discover the magic of the series will be like reading it for the first time.
I never read 50 Shades because everyone told me it was written worse than Twilight and I hated Twilight. I watched the first movie to see what the fuss was about and I still don't get it. It seemed more sad to me than romantic. A guy clearly continuing his cycle of abuse and a girl choosing to be with him because of poor self esteem. Maybe I need to read the book to understand. I do love me some Jamie Dornan though.
So I guess my UO is that I love a nickname! I live for them!! Our boys name doesn't have one and it kills me, but seriously I love shortening or changing names to a variation of original. Growing up my nickname was "Missy", nothing remotely related to my given name.
@RainyDays86, yeah it's really sad. I think even now that they are "out" and married, there is still a little shadiness around it. They are more comfortable as the years have gone on, but both FIL's immediate families are very Mormon and most of them just can't accept them even though FIL #1 is in his 70s. It's heartbreaking. DH and his sister are SUPER liberal and accepting and it's just sad that it took them so long to even be comfortable saying something to them.
@Kipperoo Woa. It's sad that I'm not surprised to hear of a Mormon man who had to hide his sexuality for so long. DH is ex-Mormon and has told me similar stories.

When we had our wedding invitations made, he was kind of awkward. I've never been on a cruise, but have trouble getting on board with the idea (see what I did there? ). It sounds not as relaxing as sitting by a pool at an all-inclusive, which is my type of relaxing vacation. Which brings me to... I like to go TO the beach, but I don't like to be ON the beach so much. I hate sand in my clothes and I'm iffy at best on being in the ocean beyond about waist-deep.
I am kinda too out of it/drained for my own UO today, so that will have to do.
I've heard Trip as a third same name nickname. I'm the name your kids what your gonna call them type person. I never had a nickname growing up with Adrienne as my first name and it's kinda stuck. My sons name is nicholas when people were asking what I'll be calling him I said Nicholas and would be completely contradicted immediately ohh you'll call him nick wait and see. No no I won't thanks for the condescension. Others have given him nickname my best friend and her husband immediately called him nick. I'll text blah blah nicholas blah blah she'll go nick blah blah. They call him it in front of me I wanna scream his name is nicholas he doesn't respond to nick! This same friend shortened her sons name to O or O O from owen... how did he need a shorter name? My sons second daycare called him big time because he's a giant towering over his older classmates. I personally hate cruises I don't like the tiny pools the small amount of deck chairs the tiny claustrophobic rooms. I just want to go to one place and stay and explore
Another insight on the nicknames thing too is that it's just a term of endearment. It's not a way of shortening it, but it's a "this is your formal name" but we are close so we call you "this nickname." In Arab culture and I'm sure other cultures and families it's completely common for a child to have a legal name and be called a standard nickname by their family and those that they are close with but not by others outside the family.
For example; my husbands name is Mohammed. I and most others in my family and our friends call him Moe or Mohammed. (When I first met him I called him by his last name because there was so many Mohammeds) Moe is a shortened version of his name. But his entire family has called him "hamood or hamooda" his entire life. I've never heard his mother talk to him with another name. But when she talks about him to outside the family: it's Mohammed. So some nicknames may be culturally based in nature and just a way of saying "I like you" or "i love you"
On on that note: I'll never understand the request of parents to call their child something being ignored. That's just disrespectful and would warrant a conversation IMO.
