Baby Name Choices & Discussion!

Re: Baby Name Choices & Discussion!

  • Amybee5, I do think Laney sounds like a nickname, so I'd prefer Delaney. Rose is a great middle name! And I don't think it's too close to your name - it would be for a sibling set, but not for a mother/daughter.

  • @Jkp7749 Love Molly and Ophelia - so unique and sweet!
@nda_roxybabe Lennon's nn of Lemon is the cutest ever!
@Beachmommy2b My vote is Ezra, traditional but not mainstream.
    @Auro_c Love Enzo!

Clearly I'm a fan of E names: DD is Emilia Michaelle, and for this baby, if she's a girl, she'll be Eleanor Iris, if a boy, he'll be Isaac William
  • @Amybee5 I have a (male) acquaintance named Laney, but my best friend's name is Elanie (pronounced E-Laney). It's Greek. Sometimes she goes by Laney, which I guess would count as a nn, but I don't think it stands out as nick-namey. It's very pretty with Rose.

  • I've always heard that the SSA name list for the prior year comes out in May. Any idea or consistency with early or late May? I'm not due until 5/29 and I'm a little worried that it'll come out when I'm hormonal and 38 weeks and it'll "ruin" my choice. I know I could just NOT a look but how can I not if I'm about to name my kid the #1 name and he'll be stuck with it the rest of his/her life? I realize this is an insane anxiety to have but I guess welcome to pregnancy/parenting?
  • @Amybee5 - I had a female roommate in college named Lane, which I love- maybe Laney could be a nickname for that?

@MTB16 - All 3 are solid choices, though Maxwell Alexander is my favorite. I'm a big fan of Maxwell, unfortunately DH has vetoed it for unspecified reasons :(

@chailife34 - I am in love with the name Eleanor! It looks like I won't get a chance to use it, but it is a fantastic name.

  • @kayemjay2 love Henry! That was on my list for DS but DH nixed it.
Can't tag you h+p but I love Levi. If this child was a boy we would be using it.
@nda_roxybabe one vote for Berkeley Grace!
@mrsrep123 I agree with others and vote Cash. I have a friend with a little Cash and it's a truly adorable name.
To the poster with a Genevieve and Josephine, I love the name Jocelyn but it is too much Jos sound with your other names to me.
@livin541 I love Graham or Bennett with Sawyer.
@Amybee5 I have a friend Laney and I think it's a really cute name. I see no problem with your name and it together either.

For us, we're trying to decide between Grace, Nora, Harper and Hadley. I also love Magnolia but I'm concerned about it with our last name beginning with M. Grace would be the middle name if we don't choose it for a first. It is my great grandmother's name. DS is Wyatt.
  • UGH Dh caved. He is second guessing Ophelia because of his family's comments. He says he looked up Ophelia from Hamlet since that is the most famous Ophelia and she was basically crazy and drowned and now he's not sure since that's where most people have heard Ophelia. I get that, but it's so pretty.... Now we have nothing for baby b. We liked Adelia thinking it is still feminine and unique, but it seems too close to her cousin (who is very close in age and lives next to us), Adalyn. Other than that... nothing. suggestions on similar names to Ophelia- a "real" name but unique and feminine?
  • @Jkp7749 suggestions:
    Cordelia
    Persephone
    Vivienne
    Genevieve
    Eloise
    Theodora
    Delilah
    Mabel
I may or may not have had some help from nameberry.
  • @Jkp7749 - That is so frustrating! Ophelia is a beautiful name. Some suggestions for similar names:

    Iona
    Lavinia
    Petra
    Miranda
    Eleanor(a)
    Hazel
    Cassandra
    Filomena
    Matilda
    Leandra
    Ivy
Magnolia  (shout out to @champhe - LOVE this name. Magnolia Grace is beautiful, and the double M would not bother me at all)

    @Jkp7749 Also Olivia
Or Amelia. I keep randomly thinking of names.
  • @kayemjay2 LOVE Magnolia Grace!
@Jkp7749 makes sense why he's skeptical, but it's such a great name.   @champhe suggestions of Eloise and Cordelia are excellent options for Ophelia replacements. I'd have a hard time choosing!
  • @Jkp7749 I was thinking Amelia, but isn't your other name Molly? I think that may be a little too close for my taste. Olive?

    @starphish18 that's my mom's name!

These are what we've talked about
    Boys
    Kingsley
    Clark
    Augustus
Tybereus (H is dead set on this name)
    Oliver
    Everett
    Declan
    Tobias

    Girls
Dorothy Rose (pretty sure this will be it if it's a girl-Dorothy was his grandma's name)
    Penelope
    Lilian
    Everly
Lenora (family name - might change Rose to Lenora to have both family names in there)

Edited for grammar because I phones can be stupid and not realize you were giving ownership to someone...geez

Also, what do you all think of Tybereus? I'm hesitant, but H LOVES it! If we are having a boy that is...

  • @nda_roxybabe I LOVE Berkeley Grace!!

@livin541 I really like Graham.  I think it's a strong but not overdone name.

@champhe I think Hadley is a very cute name.

We decided on Thatcher Lucas pretty early.

  • I already have an Owen and Graham...this baby girl will be Quinn Leighton.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions!!! I feel like I'm being way too picky, but nothing sounds as good to me as Ophelia now that I thought we'd decided!
  • @diana_3481  love that you are honoring your father! Love the initials as a middle name. I totally said Harper with a Boston accent in my head after I read that haha Both names are super cute :)

  • This will probably get more feedback on Baby Names, but I just like you ladies more ;)

Right now I'd say our frontrunner for a girl is Abigail. Its more popular than I'd like, but MH really loves it, and its a favorite of mine, too. However, I'm struggling on a middle name. I'd REALLY like to honor my maternal grandmother. She died when my mom was 19 (long before I was born) and as crazy as it sounds, I've always felt like I have some sort of spiritual connection with her. We share many personality traits and at the least, I feel like she's my guardian angel or something. Anyway, the problem is her name was Shirley. Which, is just not a pretty name haha. But, does Abigail Shirley have any kind of flow to it at all? Her middle name was Jean, but I'm not in love with that either! Thoughts on Abigail Shirley?
  • @ShadeofGreen816 - Abigail is a beautiful name, and is definitely not common in my area. I'd say go with Abigail Shirley if it's meaningful to you! I don't think there is any issue with flow, though I also don't generally care about first/middle flow- how often do you use both anyway? I definitely think Shirley is prettier than Jean.

  • @ShadeofGreen816 I think that's a lovely name! I love names with a family connection.
For what it's worth, you don't really say a whole name that often. For me the test is- does the name sound good said in an angry way (Abigail Shirley Lastname get in here right now!!), in a disappointed way (Abigail Shirley, I can't believe you would do that.), and in a super sweet/loving way (Abigail Shirley Lastname you are just the sweetest little girl I've ever seen!).
For me those are pretty much the only times I really use the middle name!
  • @ShadeofGreen816 did your grandmother ever use a nickname? FWIW, Abigail Shirley or Abigail Ley (sp?) are both pretty...

    DS1 7/24/15

    DS2 5/7/17

  • @diana_3481 both names are great... Harper Red is pretty original and even sounds good with the Boston touch  ;)

    DS1 7/24/15

    DS2 5/7/17

  • @diana_3481 I love that you are going to honor your father with a mn! I think Sophia Russell is very nice.

@ShadeofGreen816 How about Abigail Lee? I think that has a nice ring to it.
  • @ShadeofGreen816, I like the ring of Abigail Jean. If you're not keen on the name spelled like that, maybe the more feminine version of Abigail Jeanne might work? Also, is Abigail going to have a nn? To me Abby Jean has a nice ring to it while Abby Shirley is somewhat awkward. I agree though, that the two names together are rarely used, so I'd go with what means the most to you.

  • Love all the names - and this thread. Sorry for not tagging, but to the mom considering Jean...I have a friend named Grace Jean and I love it. We do call her Grace Jean jellybean but there are much worse nn. Also love Henry, Sullivan, and Miles. Mael (pronounced Mile) was on our boy list. And Harrison.

We are having a girl and we are struggling with the middle name. We seem to have settled on Willa for the first name (my grandma was Wilhelmina). I wanted Gordon for a middle name after my much younger brother who passed away last year - she is due on his birthday - but my husband is against it because my brother took his own life. He would give in if I insisted, but I want him to be comfortable with any name we choose. DH wants Willa James after his family (his middle name and his dad's name). I do like it but would love other suggestions.

  • I like Willa James a lot! I considered James as a mn if this LO is a girl but seeing as the first name we chose was predominately a boy name, I didn't think giving a girl two masculine names was a good idea.

    Suggesting:
    Willa Mae
    Willa Rose
    Willa Grace
  • @ShadeofGreen816, I love Abigail Jean, but I'm biased because we're using the middle name Jean if we have a girl (Caitlin Jean). It's after my aunt, and I love how the nickname Caty Jean sounds. Abigail Shirley sounds nice, too, though!

@ShadeofGreen816 - Abigail Shirley sounds so sweet! I think the combination is very pretty!

We've locked down our names already :)

James Trevor - We actually picked James when we were dating in high school like 10 years ago, and Trevor is DH's name.

Evelyn Marie - We both love the name Evelyn and Marie is my middle name. I loved the idea of passing down my name too and Evelyn Marie just sounded nicer than Evelyn Stephanie.

We are having a girl and really love the name Maggie June. We can't decide on doing just Maggie though versus a longer name to nickname to that like Magnolia or Margaret. Any thoughts about naming with just a nickname?

  • @teeniepott I think Maggie is pretty as is, but I also love Magnolia. I don't think there's anything wrong with going right for the "nickname", though.
  • I think Margaret or magnolia are very pretty with June!!
