Gestational diabetes

I had gestational diabetes with #1.

Wondering what you other momma's are trying to do this time around. What are you eating? How are you eating? Have you already started testing your sugar?

Last time I drank a ton of unsweetened tea to add flavor.. but since her, I've had kidney stones that they relate to the tea (I disagree. The birth control they put me on I'd never been on. When I'd start back on the pills following period pills, I'd get a kidney stone. Not one kidney stone while pregnant.... I blame the pill! However I'm not risking it. Those are worse than labor!)

So I've switched to mostly water and diet pop when I need it. I've attempted to cut back on breads this week.. but it's my weakness!

  • @breannahayes12 There's a GD support thread that has been started here that might be more helpful for you: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12696173/gd-support-thread#latest

  • Well, I tried searching for one before posting and nothing came up. The website is just being funky lately.
  • Loading the player...
  • @breannahayes12 No worries at all! Just figured I'd let you know it was there. I think they called it GD support, so maybe that's why it didn't come up in searches? Or The Bump is just being stupid... who knows!

  • Checked it. No responses.
  • I don't know what to tell you - it looks like @Lolo427 started it so clearly someone else wants to talk GD issues.

  • I havent been tested yet but had with our 1st child and I can tell the symptoms are back. So far I have just started drinking only water and watching what I eat much closer.
  • Never had GD but this pregnancy is different. I did the one 1 hour test and that was elevated and I did the 3 hour and found out my blood sugars dropped..
  • I also posted this in the GD Support Thread but it seems dead and I'm new to these boards....but here is my story.
I also had GD in a past pregnancy and ended up losing the baby at 30 weeks (unknown reasons)
Currently I'm 17 weeks and was told last week to start testing my blood sugars.  During the day they are perfect (70-90s) but my fasting has been above 90 most days (96 highest).  I am watching my diet, walking 30 mins most nights, and having a high protein snack before bed.  Any suggestions?
  • @AliG1217 **lurking from Aug 2017**

I had GD with my last pregnancy, and was very sad when I was put on insulin.  But to be honest, having a fasting number of 96 was the magic number for me for them to raise my insulin (I think I had to have a couple 96+s in a row, or maybe it was because they already knew we were chasing my numbers the whole pregnancy)..  and then my fasting would be under control, and eventually I'd be up to 96 or higher again and they'd raise my insulin.

Thank God for insulin.  I gave birth to a perfectly health 7lb 4oz girl.  I was never going to be able to manage my GD with diet, I did zumba everyday and balanced my carbs with my protein so well, but my placenta was a bully...

Good luck to you.  Call your dr. and stay on top of it.

Also, I know it sounds counter-intuitive.  But I think you should also be have a carb with your protein before bed.  Like a greek yogurt or something (I used to do half a banana and almond butter).  If your carbs drop low during the night, it causes your body to break down reserves for sugar, which may be resulting in the elevated number in the morning.
  • I was dx with severe reactive hypoglycemia last year. I check my blood sugar throughout the day anyway. Im curious to see what my sugar is going to do this preg.

  • Sorry, I've been out of commission this whole past week because everyone (in luring my little) got noro virus back to back to back. I can happily bump mine or delete my post so we don't have too many GD posts going.  Lord knows when the testing starts everyone comes on here to complain about the test or results. Let me know.

Anyhoo I'm doing the opposite, I'm under the assumption I'm going to get it so I've been eating whatever and whenever I want on the carb range (still trying to eat semi health conscious as well) because I'm sure I'll be cut off the next month or so.
  • Thanks for the advice @Peedy.  I did call my OB and I am scheduled to meet with the Diabetic Counselor at the high risk office on Jan 5.  I have always been having a carb with my snack, greek yogurt (fage plain 2%), sometimes I add a few blueberries and some almonds.  It works some nights and others it doesn't.  Or I'll have a cheese stick and some nuts.  Apple and peanut butter doesn't work nor does peanut butter with a multigrain Wasa toast. I noticed the past few nights that if I walk for 30 mins on my treadmill around 9pm then have my snack before bed at 10pm I have a fasting in the high 80's.  Strange thing is I can have a bowl of pasta during the day and my sugar is 76 after. I will have no problem taking insulin, I will do whatever it takes to have a healthy live baby.  I found out at my appt with the Diabetic counselor at 30 weeks in my last pregnancy that my baby had passed.  Whatever it takes.
