Figured Id start this thread for those of us who have, might have, don't want but have Gestational Diabetes, instead of the board getting clogged a 100 times when the glucose testing comes up.
Somewhat AW but wanted to share my experience. I'm much earlier than others at 5w 5d but I've already gotten the shakes 3 days in a row pre meals so i'm fairly confident I'm already well on my way to diagnose as it was same last pregnancy. I was insulin controlled 4x last time both humilin and humilog after med and diet controlled didn't work; So they are planning on testing me with a 3 hour glucose and starting insulin right away at the end of the month should I test high. For those who don't know, it's completely hormonal and not necessarily based on health or fitness (last pregnancy I was running half marathons and still was diagnosed).
What about you?
Is this the first time you've had GD or have you had it in prior pregnancies? Does it run in the family?
Diet/Med/Insulin controlled??
Any tricks or recipes you want to share?
Any struggles?
Re: GD Support Thread
I haven't had any issues yet, but I had GD with my last pregnancy. I had no idea I had it until I tested high. I have a cousin who had GD and my grandfather had type 2 diabetes.
Diet/Med/Insulin controlled??
I was lucky enough that I was able to control it with diet. If my numbers were borderline, I was threatened with the meds, but that just made me work harder!
Any tricks or recipes you want to share?
Protein! I had high numbers if I ate fruit (which of course that's all I was craving) so I could still eat them if I paired it with some nuts or peanut butter since the protein helped balance the sugar out. I also had a hard time with my morning numbers so my dietitian had me start eating a snack right before bed (usually dh and I would split a piece of toast with peanut butter and sliced bananas on top) and that started giving me perfect numbers in the morning!
Any struggles?
Being pregnant and told you have to watch what your eating is a huge struggle! Oh and a food journal really helps! I would write down everything I ate, how many carbs it was and later what my sugars tested. That way I could refer back to it if I needed to.
ive included an info graphic about dietary but am trying to dig up my guidelines from last time. There's an awesome GD support page on Facebook if you check as well.
