Body pillows

My mom is asking what I want for Christmas and I'm debating asking for a pregnancy pillow... anyone use one or recommend any brands? With my last 2 pregnancies I just used a crapload of pillows to prop up because I get terrible heartburn and put a bunch between my legs, etc. I keep hearing great things about pregnancy pillows but never a certain brand. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few out there.

Re: Body pillows

  • I've heard good things about the Snoogle here and IRL. I asked for one for Christmas too.

  • The Snoogle is awesome. There are several options for positions to use the pillow and it definitely helped me stay more comfortable once my belly got bigger with DS. Great gift idea for an expecting mom.
  • This is my second time with a snoogle and I love it. I know some people like the U shaped ones but I like that snoogle has an open side so getting in and out of bed a million times a night in the third tri is easier. I just added an extra pillow under my belly as I got large and in charge.

Ditto word for word. I really need to get my snoogle pillowcase washed so I can start using it! I keep forgetting to :#

  • DH just surprised me last week with the Boppy body pillow and I absolutely love it! I definitely recommend it. :)

  • I have the Leacho Back n' Belly, the u-shaped one. I love it! It is sometimes difficult to get out of bed, but I just bend the one side up and it stays so it hasn't been much of an issue. I originally got it just for the back issues that I have and it is wonderful!! Any of the pillows will be a great gift for Christmas!! :)

  • I had the Leacho  u shaped one with my last pregnancy and loved it. I agree it was very hard to get out of bed with it and it took up a lot of space.

I actually recently had to toss it because my cat peed on it. So I've just been using a regular body pillow and to be totally honest I kind of like it better than the giant pregnancy pillow that I had.

  • I've been using the Snoogle and really like it! It's just the half one.

  • I just have a regular old Target body pillow DH got me when I was pregnant with my first.  I like it because it doesn't take up much room and I can flip it from side to side as I roll around.

  • I asked for the Back N Belly (the u shaped one) for Christmas. I obviously can't speak to experience yet, but I like that it's supportive all around. And like @BabyMC517 said, I imagine I'll just be able to lift the one side up to get out of bed.
  • Another vote for the snoogle!!! Finally pulled it out of the closet this week!

Random side note- when you make your bed, what do you do with the giant pillow?  It looks really weird both on top of and underneath the blankets. I know it really doesn't matter, because no one sees our bed anyway, but I'm wondering if I'm just missing something!

@Squirtgun annoying, but I coil it on the floor like a snake  :D

Edited to fix the chopped sentence and to add, ignore my sloppy bedskirt, we're getting a proper fitting one soon and the bed is lumpy because I just threw it on to take a pic (not for here, for a FB post about my dumb nightstands)

  • @Squirtgun I shove mine behind all my pillows on our bed it looks funny but the only people who see it are DH and I!
Maybe I'm missing something too haha

  • Question about the snoogle: for those who toss and turn all night, do you find it is a pain to pick it up and move it from one side of the bed to another?  I'm currently sleeping with a regular pillow between my knees for hip support and it annoys me to no end to have to move it back and forth as I roll from side to side.  I'm worried that with an even bigger pillow that will be more of an annoyance.
  • @squirtgun the first time around I just left the snoogle in the spot I liked it then put the bedspread on top. I will probably do that again. It's nice that it's there waiting for me to snuggle in!

  • @RainyDays86 that's why I went with the back 'n belly because I tend to toss and turn. However, I haven't lately mostly because I'm not comfortable on my right side haha but it is much easier to turn and not have to move the other pillows with you and get all situated again, at least in my opinion :)

I leave it under the covers haha no one comes in our room but us so I figured it doesn't really matter! If I make the bed really nice then I will put it on top just so the covers are even...a little OCPD!

  • @RainyDays86 I move a lot in the night, but don't move the pillow. If I'm turned towards the open side I have the bottom pulled up, between my knees.

I've never had a pregnancy pillow and every time I question my decision! I think I'll just go with the regular body pillow again this time but those Snoogles do look super comfy...

  • I have the boppy body pillow and I don't like it. I was just too lazy/cheap to get another one when that one was starting to not work out in pregnancy #1 or for pregnancy #2 when I knew it wouldn't be ideal. For both pregnancies I ended up using a lot of other pillows positioned in various ways. This time I might get one of these other ones you all recommend. I found that for the boppy you had to be a pretty precise height, which is a bit shorter than me (I'm 5'7"; I think that 5'5" or 5'4" would be better). It also got really flat over time so it didn't provide much support.

I agree with it being annoying to have to reposition pillows when you toss and turn.

Another thing that worked for me last time that is worth mentioning -- I got a foam mattress topper and then doubled it up on my "side" of the bed (DH wanted nothing to do with it, and then that gave me double thickness.) I found this helped my SPD quite a bit. IMO the worst part of SPD is sleeping. For both pregnancies I was sleeping in a chair (like the nursing chair) by the end of the pregnancy. Lying down was too painful. We got rid of that chair when we moved so I'm telling DH we NEED a new chair before this pregnancy gets too far along!

I got the "PharMeDoc Total Body Pillow w/Detachable Extension" from Amazon...and I love it! At first it was a pain to get in and out of bed, but now I just flip one side up. And if you really hate it you can just detach the one side.
  • Wow ladies thank you!!!!

  • Who makes their bed?
Haha, I have this weird thing where I sleep better in a neat bedroom. The entire house can be a disaster and I'm fine, but if the bedroom is a mess I can't sleep well.

I started with a snoogle in my last pregnancy and yes, found it VERY annoying to move from side to side with it. Which is why I ended up getting the giant U shaped one.

Now I just use a regular body pillow and it's a little annoying. But it's small enough to not be a pain in my ass. I didn't toss and turn towards the end of my last pregnancy as much because it was just too hard!

  • We moved all of our stuff out of storage and into our new place over the weekend. Although everything is still stacked everywhere I got super excited when I saw my snoogle among the piles! Now to have DH rebuild our bed so I have somewhere to sleep with it! (We are still at MILs until this happens). But my only con from last time was DH felt like the pillow was taking up too much space because it was between us since it worked out that way when I laid on my left side which is recommended later on in pregnancy.
  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot I was going to ask the same thing lol. Last time I used a body pillow from target and it was fine but this time I got a snoogle early on and I love it. It's really helped with my RLP. I don't flip it when I roll over, I just pull the open side up between my legs. When the belly gets bigger I'll tuck a pillow under it on the open side.

This. I had the long side of the snoogle toward the middle of the bed and the smaller pillow under the belly on the end of the bed. But because the pillow would fall out of bed sometimes, I would put the fitted sheet over it and would stay put. Getting out of bed at 8 months pregnant is hard no matter the pillow setup!

  • SIL gave me the Boppy body pillow with my first pg, and I couldn't figure out how to use it where it actually did any good. I might try again this time around, but I wound up just using it between my legs when my hips would get sore.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • @Squirtgun no issues here since we do not make our bed! Snoogle all the way just put mine back in bed a week ago and of course my husband is wondering when its going bye bye. I like the look of the boppy one but as I was gifted the snoogle last time ill stay with whats free! But I do love the snoogle
  • I also asked for a maternity pillow for Christmas!! I'm still not showing, but I've heard they adapt to whatever part of your body aches (well then again I guess it depends which one you get)!

  • This is such a helpful thread! I had been leaning towards the u-shaped ones but this thread has persuaded me that the snoogle may be the way to go.

But the true enlightenment from this thread is that it's pretty common to not make your bed and that is SUCH a relief. I've always had this vague guilty "you are a bad adult" feeling so it's great to learn I'm not a monstrous outlier!

ME TOO. The bed gets made very first thing in the morning. I've actually conditioned DH to do it while I jump into the bathroom first. I feel very weird about climbing into an unmade bed at night...

Check out this link on the pros & cons on the different shapes. This will be my first time using a maternity pillow, so let me know what you all think.

The U shaped pillow definitely seems like a winner to me (minus the price).

This is so helpful. I feel like I want the U shaped one this time around, except that we have a full sized bed. I don't see how I can put this pillow, myself, and my husband in a full sized bed.

  • @Kipperoo I actually feel more comfortable in the unmade bed. I feel like the pillow is exactly how I was comfortable last night the blanket I just have to pull back over myself and it will drape perfectly and I hate the tightness on the bottom when the sheets are tucked so I always pull them out anyway. I was in the military active for training for a year and a half and that was enough bed making for me!
  • @CarmCeG I looked at something similar when I was researching the various pillows! Ended up purchasing the leacho back 'n belly (u-shaped) on amazon. It wasn't too bad, still more than I would have liked, but so worth it to me! :)

  • @BabyMC517 They are a bit pricey, but I like the benefits & this won't be last pregnancy so it'll be put to good use. (and even when I'm not pregnant) :P

  • I honestly don't think the Ushaped ones are good unless you have a large bed or are a very small person. We have a king bed, but I'm 5'11, my fiance is 6'6.....so us + the giant u shaped pillow and our bed was PACKED. I was almost glad I had to toss it because it just took up so much space!

This is why I didn't like my snoogle last pregnancy. I couldn't use it comfortably under the covers and then when the bed was made it'd look so ugly laying on top lol I personally did better eith regular pillows
