Ok so let me start off with some background information - I did not vote for Trump, I do think that he is a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic dickhead who did not deserve to win the presidential election. I also did not like Hillary, and I think that she was the complete wrong choice from the DNC, and had someone else (like Bernie) been selected, I hands down believe that he would have beat Trump.
So here is my UO. I understand people are afraid and people need to grieve over this election and the results, but I am so over hearing about it in person and on Facebook. The fact of the matter is Trump won. I do not believe that belly aching about it will help anything, and what we need now is to make sure that those who are in Congress do what is necessary to pass the right bills and the right legislation to make this country move forward. There are some pieces of Trumps 100 first day plan that I think are legitimate, and I look forward to seeing if he can create any positive change in our country.
Although, I must say that I am nervous about him being read into the top secret things going on in the world and that he will have access to the nukes, as he is a trigger happy say what he feels, does what he wants kind of a guy.
@Jenshoes I'm over the posts as well. I get it, no one wanted him to win. Hopefully, the same people who expressed their opinions also choose to ACT! He will only succeed if we allow it.
I'm nervous about the violence that people will encounter, but I have faith that our country will prevail.
I'm not too happy about him being near such devices either.
While everyone is shocked and many are upset, angry, and afraid- burning the flag in "protest" is sickening and deplorable. It is disrespectful to ALL CITIZENS including the many that made so many sacrifices for country including our military, civil rights leaders, and those who have fought for our country. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and able to express/ protest as long as we are not rioting, destroying our cities, and attacking other individuals for their own beliefs/ opinions.
I don't think drinking alcohol in any quantity, frequency, or at any point in pregnancy is safe. I know some women drink while pregnant and their children have turned out just fine, but why take the risk?
@luckywife10 I am a Eucharistic minister at my church, pretty much means I drink and hand out the wine. I stopped doing that in all my pregnancies because I don't want to take any risk at all. I had a friend tell me that was the only reason she looked forward to services on Sunday while pregnant, so she could get that sip of wine.
I'm full of unpopular opinions I suppose, because I agree with @jennshoes, @MamaMiller, and @luckywife10. I don't think anyone truly wanted Trump to win, but there was no good option. Thankfully, there are other parts of government that will keep him in check but I feel like people are exaggerating what will potentially happen, I don't think other republicans or democrats will let him go wild. Needing to cancel college tests and offer therapy dogs and pizza seems quite extreme. And for the alcohol, I've heard plenty of people drinking and everything turn out fine, but odds have never been in my favor and on the off chance that something ended up going wrong, I'd blame myself forever so I would never be able to take that risk.
As for my own unpopular opinion, I am already listening to christmas music and watching christmas movies. I even wore christmas pajama pants yesterday... I CAN'T WAIT.
@mcvgal My church has wine and a grape juice option in the communion trays. I've never cared for the taste of wine so I've always taken the grape juice option
Trump is a disaster. I'm slightly less concerned about the next 4 years. I'm really concerned about the several supreme court lifetime appointments. I do think this has set our nation back and I think anyone can grieve about that however they want. I didn't cry, but I know plenty of people that did. These people were already involved in their personal causes and they see this as a huge disappointment and a quick time machine back to the dark ages.
Flag burning is awful and I don't support it. But, it's also protected speech.
I think a glass of wine is fine. I'm not a religious person, but I spent some time in church as a kid. Aren't communion cups tiny thimbles or shot glasses? That said, I have yet to take more than a sip to taste anything with alcohol in any of my pregnancies. That's mostly because it doesn't sound good and I'm always so thirsty for water when pregnant.
I only like homemade strawberry or strawberry rhubarb jam and I love cottage cheese.
My UO: I think its perfectly fine to have a few drinks while nursing. I have several nursing friends who refuse to drink at all or insist on pumping & dumping. Alcohol hits bm like BAC, which means a few drinks makes your bm's alcohol percentage about as high as that of a glass of apple juice left on the counter for an hour.
I guess I do have one after scrolling! I fully support the continuing anger, outrage and protest going on regarding a Donald Trump presidency. I will not calm down and work together with a man who has racist, xenophobic, anti woman, fraudulent ideals and makes no secret of them. I have a daughter and it is not OK. I was literally in shock yesterday- and think it is terribly infantizing to be told "lets all work together". No- because this president is actively against quite a lot of "us" and apparently rich white men still get to do whatever the hell they want with no consequences. I hope people remain outraged and so remain involved in politics and then maybe real change can happen.
I'm seriously debating with myself if I should even say this, because I don't want to turn this thread into a huge argument. But I just have to. Sorry if it makes anyone mad. (But not too sorry, honestly, because I'm mad already.)
I I feel like a lot of people are saying "oh, no one really LIKES trump." "I don't see why people are so upset about it!" "Trumps being elected has nothing to do with racism" "People need to get over it, he won, it's not like he's really going to have that much power", etc. 1. Actually, yes. A lot of people really like trump. A lot of people on my Facebook newsfeed, actually, so I'm seeing a lot of it. 2 and 3. (They go together.). This is the big one to me. The thing is, in the town next to mine there was a big "make America white again" rally in honor of trump on Election Day. A lot of my African American friends are suddenly dealing with a lot more blatant and verbal racism in the past couple of days. A lot of my friends' young kids are suddenly being targeted by kids that they thought were friends. The KKK is organizing a parade in honor of trump in NC (I checked on snopes, it looks legitimate.) I think if you don't understand why people are this upset about it, you are very sheltered. And I'm glad that you don't have that worry and fear in your life! But a lot of people do. 4. The election was this week. I don't think it's unreasonable for people to still be talking about it on social media, or in person. It's not like a game, when it's over one wins, one loses, and you move on. There will be widespread repercussions based on the results of the election. Trump will be president for four years, actively taking part in decisions that will affect everyone in the country for that time. I'm sorry if you think people should have moved on, but I think that's crazy.
Yes, there will be more productive ways to move forward than posting frustrations and anger on social media, but for now people are processing. I don't think it's unreasonable.
I hate Motherhood Maternity and Old Navy maternity clothes. A lot of people seem to love it but the fabric and fit is so yucky to me. I get not wanting to spend a ton on clothes you wear for like 6 months but disposable clothes make me feel badly about myself.
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot since I will be a first time mom I haven't breastfed before but it is my intention to after baby is born. I haven't read into breastfeeding and drinking alcohol but I will most likely enjoy a drink every now and then. For those who have drank while breastfeeding, did you pump ahead of time for when you knew you'd be drinking or not?
@luckywife10 I nursed 15 months and enjoyed my scotch the whole time. Someone crunchier and more hung ho about bf can probably get you some links but the jist is that the amount of alcohol in your milk isn't the same as what you drank, it's much much much less. My rule of thumb that I felt comfortable with was to wait an hour after a drink to nurse. During growth spurts or the early days when he was feeding frequently that might mean drinking while nursing or right after. No shame.
@KMD1106 I've never had strawberry jam, but I have raspberry jam a lot and it is delicious!
I see why people don't want to drink at all during their pregnancies, but it annoys me when people tell me I shouldn't be.
@Jkp7749 I love christmas music and cannot wait to start singing it
And to be clear, it is not that I don't think people should have reactions to the election, but I'm sick of it on my Facebook. Mostly because the people that post all this hateful stuff (because a lot of it is hateful towards those that voted for trump) will never do anything to actively try to make a change in their own communities and states. I think now more than ever we all need to be aware of what politicians are trying to pass and what they are doing because they DO impact us. I don't think we need to sit down and let Trump do what he wants, I think we need to get informed and get involved.
@Squirtgun I am so sorry for what is happening near you. I too know that many people like Trump. I live in a small town in the country and I think that I am one of the only people in the town that voted for Hillary. My in-laws are all completely Republican, and some are knowledgeable about politics and their stance, and other just vote for Trump because they themselves are racist and sexist.
These inequities are why I became a social worker and wanted to help people.
They sell strips to check the alcohol level in breastmilk. I never had to use them. With DS1 I noticed my tolerance level greatly decreased after not drinking at all for so many months. It's not like you will really have time to go out drinking with a newborn anyway. I never pumped ahead of drinking, but I did try to nurse before having a drink with dinner. I remember a lactation consultant saying that as long as I didn't feel a slight buzz it should be ok. With only one drink and timing it after a nursing session, I never had any issues.
My UO, I don't understand the urgency or desire for novelty ultrasounds. What is the point of paying for a vanity one at 16 weeks or so when the anatomy scan will be right around the corner.
@luckywife10 I nursed my DD for 19 months and drank until I found out I was pregnant again! I followed the rule of drinking and driving. If I had a beer or two and felt fine to drive, I would nurse my daughter. If I felt tipsy or had more than 2 beers or hard alcohol, I would give her pumped breastmilk (from earlier that day or the day before). I have never pumped and dumped as it's not necessary. Only time is necessary. If she was still hungry after the pumped bottle, I'd wait another hour or two until I nursed her. I'd also try to time my drinks correctly around her nursing schedule. She would typically nurse every 2.5-3 hours (not in the beginning) so say I wanted a glass of wine, I'd nurse her while I started drinking the wine and then by the time she was hungry again, I was completely fine.
I agree 100% with everything @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot said (except the part about homemade jam- I'm not that fancy, I'll eat store bought). Trump's potential power over the Supreme Court terrifies me. We have to find a way to keep RBG alive indefinitely. I also completely agree with @Squirtgun and @jamielynn3280090808- this wound is still very fresh, so I think expressing outrage on social media is understandable. These days, social media is incredibly powerful. I refuse to jump on the bandwagon or just quietly accept that this man is my president...because he is not. I know the chance of the electoral college changing anything is slim, but I will hold on to that. It's not over until it's over. The people chose Hillary, and our system is broken if that counts for nothing.
My politics related UO: I actively, fully, 100% love Hillary Clinton. I did not vote for her because she was the "lesser evil." I proudly voted for her because she is a smart, competent candidate who has spent her entire adult life fighting for causes I believe in and I am confident she would have been a bad ass president.
My less serious UO: I despise automatic toilet flushers, hand towel dispensers, or anything else that tries to think for me in the bathroom.

Not election related, but still sure to get some flame. My UO: I hate it when people say things like 'there is no way your uterus is that high already' or 'x weeks is too early to feel the baby' or other definitives about other people's bodies. I understand it when it's an extreme, like someone saying they already feel the baby move at 6 weeks, when it's just not physically possible. But everybody is different, and it is possible to start feeling babies move around their 12th week, especially if it's a subsequent pregnancy. And women's bodies are all so different that those charts you see floating around out there are general guidelines, not concrete evidence of where a woman's actual uterus is located. I know I personally have a very short torso, but my best friend's is like twice as long as mine. There's no way our uteruses would hit the same location within our bodies if we were the same amount pregnant. And no, I'm not medically ignorant and I know there is a reason those charts exist, as they are a guideline to give people an idea of internal organ location. But there are always exceptions and people outside of the norm, and I hate it when people give definitives and use unsubstantiated charts or generalities as their "proof."
I had another political UO. I also didn't vote for HRC because she was the lesser evil and I am a card-carrying member of Pantsuit Nation. That said, I really, really wanted Joe Biden to run. Given the year (and really, his whole life) leading up to the election, I understand why he didn't. So I guess my UO is that, while we are past due for a female president & although I fully supported HRC, I just really wanted Biden.
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot THANK YOU for knocking down the 12 week pelvic bone uterus "law". That has been driving me nuts around here lately.
A related UO for the third tri is I think it's dumb when someone has a scan and the tech says the baby is measuring X and a dozen people quickly reply that those things are always wrong and offer an anecdote. No, they aren't always correct but there are statsitically sound margins of error around those measurements that yor provider is well aware is well aware of.
My UO is that I voted for Trump. (Flame away!) I don't agree with what he has said about women or even other racial groups, but as a Republican I agree with the fundamentals.
Being pregant and already having a child, I could not rightly vote for someone who believes that my unborn child does not matter. I also do not believe in what HRC has done in the past.
You may not agree with me, as I can see most of you don't from the previous posts, but everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. The outcome of the election may not be what you wanted, but it is time for us to band together as a nation and rebuild the foundation upon which we were built.
@luckywife10 - just kind of going off of what others have said - once you get into the swing of nursing, you'll be able to tell what works for your body. Also, my doctor suggested to me that if I knew I just wanted to have a single glass of wine at the end of the day to unwind, to actually have it while I was nursing. It takes time for the alcohol to hit your bloodstream, and if you sip while the baby is feeding it won't have enough time to get there.
This entire election process has been insane. I'm still at a loss to think that someone with absolutely no political experience is our President. I just....I have no words.
My UO - I don't like chocolate milk. Even as a kid I didn't like it, which is strange because I love chocolate!
@achase123 you should really do some research on what happens to abortion rates when we have a democrat president versus republican president- particularly the bush vs Obama years of that is your justification for electing a bigot.
Not really a UO, but I actually met Trump back in 2003ish when I was a nanny for a family who was moving into Trump Tower. I thought he was extremely polite and nice. He called me "ma'am", which I found hilarious because I was 20 at the time. I don't think being polite makes someone a good presidential candidate, but everyone makes him seem like he's this huge monster 24/7 and that wasn't the impression I got from him back then. But, again, that was years ago and before he became as famous as he is now (I didn't know who he was before I met him). It just surprised me to hear all of this stuff come out about him over the past year.
My UO: I'm still sad Jeb Bush didn't get the Republican nominee. Not because I thought he'd be a good president , but because I really wanted it to be Bush v Clinton in the same year Salt N Peppa went on tour with Vanilla Ice. I The 90s.

This. Also, being pro-choice does not equal thinking babies' lives don't matter. Being pro-choice means believing that the government should not have the power to make a very personal decision for a woman. In my view, being anti-choice is essentially saying that a woman's opinion does not matter.

@pshaortao Thank you! Finally, someone who gets the evilness of grape flavoring!
THIS. Grape anything tastes like medicine to me. Disgusting.
I'm with @Squirtgun ,@jamielynn3280090808, @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot , & kayemjay2 (likely others that I missed)...I second the fear for Trump's control over other elements of the government and I sincerely hope my fear turns out to be misplaced. This election is a tragedy on a deeper level than previous elections (in my lifetime, anyway). This is not simply a republican vs. democrat spat...the things that Trump has said and the policy changes he has promised effect a large group of people at the very core of their being. I was trying to explain it to my SIL who thinks everyone should just "get over it" and the only way I could explain it to her was to say "What if someone was elected president who outwardly stated that they believed religion and God were fake and a determent to our country because some religious zealots commit nonsensical crimes in the name of religion and that all churches should be banned or charged an insanely high "religion tax"." To which she said "that is completely ridiculous and would never happen. This country was founded on religious freedom"...YES, but this country was also founded by immigrants fleeing their country.
And, on that note, my UO is that I don't believe in God. I believe in being a good person and making good choices and treating all others with kindness and respect. I guess, if when I there happens to be something up there, hopefully living a good life is enough. But I really think the end is the end.
Oh, and I am also a Pantsuit Nation girl...I thought HRC was flawed (as are most people) but still would have made a great president. And not just because she's a woman.
(Edited for spelling because I'm clearly not great with typing long paragraphs on my mobile device.) :-)
@Kipperoo - YES to your entire post. I also am a non-believer, and I think the great thing about America is that everyone is (should be) free to practice (or not) any religion they choose. I get so angry when people say "This is a Christian nation!" No. No it is not. It is a nation for all religions. You're Christian? Cool. You do you, but don't shove that down anyone else's throat and don't act like freedom of religion = a war on Christianity. Just stop.
Fur daughter: 02/2011 Human sons: 11/2015 & 05/2017 *formerly kayemjay*
I won't touch the election stuff. But the breastfeeding and drinking is no big deal to me. I literally had a glass of wine the night I got home from the hospital with my second. I have a glass or two every night. Literally from maybe 5or 6 to 11. So baby was getting no alcohol. If I was drinking something hard I would pump before. I just don't worry about that because I never overdo it and I know baby is not getting anything. Mama needs her cocktail hour! I do however completely hate when people drink during pregnancy.
@achays11 I really do understand where you are coming from. I have issues with Clinton for the abortion reason as well. (Catholic here!). To me, the main issue is that Trump really built his campaign on marginalizing everyone who isn't exactly like him. Because of the abortion issue, I can honestly understand why some people voted for him in the election. I have two things I cannot comprehend.
1. Why ANYONE voted for him in the primaries (unless they are racist.) 2. Why people are over the moon excited and bragging on FB about how glad they are that Trump won and that everyone who lost should just be quiet. When people say that he represents "Christian values" it makes me want to puke. Because he SO doesn't. I have a couple of friends who are atheists who represent Christian values more than he does. (Not saying that you are saying that, it's just been a super common theme on my newsfeed this week!) (and as @Kipperoo / @kayemjay2 said, America is a country that is based on freedom of ALL religions. I'd much rather have a decent human no matter what their religious beliefs than someone who claims to be Christian and is horrible to people.)
The thing is, people wouldn't be nearly this upset if Clinton had lost to a Rubio or a Bush or whoever else. They'd be disappointed, but not scared and angry.
On the all important jelly debate- Apple Butter for life!!!
Disclaimer: I didn't vote for Trump, and I do not think he is a great choice for the job.
I think it's a little silly that people keep harping on the fact that 'the people chose Hillary' or 'America didn't elect Trump.' The difference was around 200,000 votes, and that is a VERY small number in the grand scheme of things. If my math is correct, it's less than .002% of the votes cast. Whatever your feelings on the outcome... Yeah, actually a WHOLE LOT of people DID choose him.
Well, I guess my UO is that I don't think a small glass of wine here and there during pregnancy is harmful at all. I can't see myself having one during this pregnancy because the smell of alcohol makes me want to hurl, but I had one in 3rd tri with DS and it was delicious.
I have a lot of election feels and some may be UOs, but after everything all over socia media, I'm just going to keep it lighthearted.

This entire election process has been insane. I'm still at a loss to think that someone with absolutely no political experience is our President. I just....I have no words.
My UO - I don't like chocolate milk. Even as a kid I didn't like it, which is strange because I love chocolate!

My UO: I'm still sad Jeb Bush didn't get the Republican nominee. Not because I thought he'd be a good president , but because I really wanted it to be Bush v Clinton in the same year Salt N Peppa went on tour with Vanilla Ice. I

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

This thread is intense today, guys. Also, @ChristinaWild, chocolate milk is delicious and I want some now.

1. Why ANYONE voted for him in the primaries (unless they are racist.)
I have a lot of election feels and some may be UOs, but after everything all over socia media, I'm just going to keep it lighthearted.
