Announcing!

Re: Announcing!

  • We plan to wait as long as possible to tell anyone. I'm hoping until after the 20-week US - but depending on how hard this pregnancy is and how quickly I show that will escalate our announcement!

I'm loving reading everyone's thoughts on this... I'm kinda struggling because I'm the communicative type and a terrible liar, but DH is insistent that it's better we wait until the traditional 12 weeks.  My office mate is already onto me (I'm about 7 weeks now, BFP 11/1), because of how I'm suddenly eating only cereal (lots of aversions).  I can't help but feel that it's only right if our parents are the first to know... telling anyone else before them feels majorly disrespectful for some reason.  I would love to do a Christmas reveal for my mom, so I'm going to try to stick with that.  But any advice is appreciated.  (I think DH wants to wait because we're slightly older and he's worried about MC).

Edit: I suppose I should add that this is our first and DH is an only child, so this baby is much-awaited by my in-laws - I think that's why I feel like they deserve to know first.  It'll only be the second for my own parents, as well.

  • We bought this shirt (this is the stock image) for our LO to change in to after thanksgiving dinner with our families. I'm wondering how long it will take them to read it and realize what's happening.
  • We shared with our parents this weekend by having DS wear a "Big Brother, est 2017" shirt. Took my brother 30 seconds to figure it out but both sets of parents took about an hour to notice!

With our first, we had more elaborate announcements. For my in-laws we shared at my FIL's family birthday party by getting a cake that said "Happy birthday grandpa". For my family, we purchased fortune cookies from bulk barn and replaced the fortunes with custom ones that said 'you will be a grandparent soon. Lucky numbers 28 03 2015" and " you will welcome a new member to the family". We then brought Chinese takeout over for dinner and waited for everyone to open their fortunes at the end! Managed to catch the reactions on video which was priceless.
  • I'm 6 weeks as of today and only my parents and a few close friends know- oh, and my boss (who is supportive and super awesome) just in case I ever had to leave in an emergency- I wanted her to know. I made the FB announcement the day before 14 weeks with my daughter. I'll probably be similar with this time around. :) So exciting, ladies!!!
  • @MamaMarsee I'm 6W today too! DH and I also have told our parents and a few close friends.  I want to tell the world though!  I will probably tell everyone as soon as I get the first US!
  • I had so much fun telling one of my best friends yesterday. We went yarn shopping and I bought some yarn not telling her what I was making. I beat her back to my house and put it in a bag with a note that said "Time to get knitting Auntie! Baby arrives July 2017!" She squealed and was so excited the cat came out to see what was happening. Wish we had videoed it.

  • We've told our immediate family. Will be telling aunts, uncles, cousins at Thanksgiving. We will announce to the world over Christmas if our doc appointment on dec 20th goes good.

  • @michelle04us I like it, but the red is really hard to read.
  • @chiquita928 I was thinking that too. However, black is worse because of the cracks in the paint. Might go back into Pixlr and just make it a solid white line.

  • @chiquita928 You're not crazy! lol.....Im struggling right now too. Only thing keeping me from telling everyone is that my mom and stepdad left for Florida today so until they get home dont want to tell so my siblings don't let it slip. I told a good friend who lives in Hawaii earlier though and thought about telling just my dad and stepmom on thursday but have to figure out how before then lol.

Thank you! I even made sure it looked good in cover photo spot on FB lol.

  • @chiquita928 I don't think you are crazy at all! If you had asked me a year ago, I would have told you I was NEVER telling anyone before the beginning of 2nd Tri. Once we started TTC, I decided I wanted my MIL and FIL (they are basically like parents to me) to know as soon as possible. We'll be telling them on Thanksgiving at 5 weeks. I can barely recognize myself! I've also justified telling my best friend this weekend because I know I would tell her even if something happened, plus she's a nurse - I know she'll be a good resource if I think I'm losing it with symptoms until I see my ob!

We are trying to figure out how we will tell SIL. She's really wants a third but her husband is dead set against it. We hadn't planned on having a 3rd but here we are. Trying to figure out how to share in a way that will not upset her.

  • @shstephenson Hooray for nurses as BFFs! I don't see my new ob until Dec. 19, and I'm sure I'll have questions between now and then!

The in-laws are being told because we want their support no matter what. Plus, they're Italian, so not drinking wine for the 5 days we're home over Thanksgiving would be a dead giveaway!

  • @RunRestRepeat my appointment isn't until the 14th and my patience is already running thin! We've already told both sets of our parents, his grandma and grandpa, my grandma and my sister. We will be telling his sister tomorrow on her birthday. If you can't tell,  I'm really bad with secrets.

  • This is hard for me because I'm a talker, and I share all news good and bad with pretty much everyone. I don't have a private bone in my body lol. But I'm not ready for my girls to know so we will wait until after the first u/s to tell family (except my ILs, they will know before that because they will be watching my littlest while we go for the appointment together). Beyond that, I just know I'll tell my grandparents as soon as possible and my parents sometime after that. I do know that we are going to tell the girls on Christmas with something to unwrap.... I left DH in charge of what that something will be.

  • @nikkiandchris I said it before and I'll say it again. We're basically the same person! Not a private bone in my body! I'm an open book in pretty much all aspects.

Had our ultra sound yesterday and we are 6 weeks with a heart rate of 111 bpm. we are telling our parents and close family today. we bought mini pies and they have  pink and blue on the inside when you bite into them!! we will probably do some type of xmas photo to announce to the world around xmas.
  • To all of you announcing today, have fun!!!
  • My FFFC is at we *were* waiting until Christmas and that didn't happen with my inlaws, and I'm not sad! I as able to keep it a secret at my dads, so that's when they'll find out!
  • Love reading and seeing all the cute announcement ideas. We plan to wait for 12 weeks which is right around Christmas. Since we are having twins I will probably wear a shirt announcing two - my family is going to freak! Only my older sister knows we r expecting but she has no clue of twins so that part is pretty exciting!
This makes me excited just thinking about their excitement! LOL Twins, congrats!
  • @LoveLee85 thank you for the shared excitement! Yay!

  • I've already told a quite few people at work (including my advisor and head of PhD program - I'm a third-year PhD student) because my nausea has been ROUGH and I had to bow out of most department events. And I ended up telling my full class of undergrads because I had to end class early one day - nearly fainted while teaching! They cheered and it was really sweet, but not a confidence builder in the working-while-pregnant department.

We've also told my parents and my husband's parents, but beyond that, trying to wait until Christmas to tell everyone else. I'll be just about 12 weeks then. I'm a little nervous about that because I'm a bridesmaid in two weddings this fall, and I won't be able to go to one of them (out-of-state), so I have to break that news to her.

I am definitely someone who is bad at keeping secrets and we are so excited, we did start telling family. Didn't do anything cute, just said it flat out :) my mom and H's parents are visiting and everyone is over the moon!
However my mom has told her siblings and cousins (which is fine, I love them and didn't specifically tell mom not to) and my one cousin thought it would be cool to text me this: **TW**
"My congratulations. I wish you to enjoy your pregnancy.
I was 9 weeks when I got to the doctor and find out that my baby's heart stop  beating when I was 7.5 weeks pregnant. I understand scary."

    What the fucking fuck, cousin?!!!

Edited to add: obviously I feel horrible for her. I didn't know she had a loss (it was last year but she chose not to mention anything until now which is her right). She has a 16 year old daughter , I wasn't even aware she was trying for a second. We have been trying for 12 months and while we have been fortunate not to experience a loss, I do feel her pain.
I just feel it's the absolute worst way to share such a thing.
  • Mj8215- that's so horrible.  I  would've been so mad if my cousin said that. There's definitely a time and space. That however wasn't fantastic timing.
  • Thanks, @OBeckett ... still worked up from this. I know I shouldn't dwell. Didn't sleep very well last night.  She also said that she thought it was a terrible idea to announce so early. I had to really make an effort to not blow up at her.
  • @mj8215  Good on you for being so self controlled I probs would've burst into tears.
  • I'm glad to know that others might be sharing at Christmas. I will be a little over 9 weeks at Christmas, but it seems like the best time to share with just our immediate family. We haven't shared with them yet because we think they would spill the beans. We go for the first ultrasound on 12/6 and I can't wait!
This is my second pregnancy. I had a miscarriage just a few days after my BFP.
Continuously praying through this! It's hard to contain my excitement!
