Our rainbow baby, Bennett Daniel was born on 1/5 at 5:17 pm. Our induction was a breeze except for the getting started late and my first epidural only taking on one side. Two hours, six cm and three sticks later and I had the most magical epidural in the world. He is 7lb 15 oz, 20 inches long and head is a whopping 37 cm. We are beyond grateful.
Everly Alexis was born January 5th at 12:18 pm. Water broke at 9 pm the night before. Nothing was happening so at 10 am they started oxytocin and the contractions were rolling like crazy. She made it out a little bruised but she's doing great!
Shared on Facebook as well, but posting his full birth story here as well.
Henry Ansel was born on 1/7/17 at 8:56PM after an extremely long, exhausting 48-hour labor. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19.5 inches long.
Looooong birth story in spoiler box:
We hired a doula for the pregnancy and although I understimated her potential during the pregnancy, man she turned out to be invaluable during labor! I had been 50% or more effaced since my 37 week appointment but 0 dilated even at the 39 week appointment and was getting frustrated. His due date of January 1st came and went uneventfully with no signs of labor until I woke up around 2AM on the 6th with cramping and knew something was up. I had contractions that were getting closer together, from 13-15 minutes apart to 6-8 minutes apart all night long, and fortunately had a 40.5 week OB appointment that morning, where it was confirmed I was 2cm dilated finally and more effaced. She told me I'd probably go naturally within the next 48 hours and thought I might already be in early labor but we scheduled an induction anyway for Monday the 9th just in case.
Our doula came over and I labored at home for the rest of the day. The contractions were holding pretty steadily at 5-7 minutes apart for most of the day but felt like almost nothing really. They weren't painful at all and I was starting to question whether they were real but my doula was like, "Your uterus is tightening. This is real."
At around 7PM, I felt a gushing feeling and thought it was my water, but it was my mucus plug coming out in one fairly huge chunk. Gross. The contractions started to get closer together at that point, about 4 minutes.
And then I had a nice gush of fluid with some pink tinge in it about another hour later. My doula wasn't sure if it was my water breaking or just bloody show. We decided to wait it out some more and eventually my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart. We live about a 3 minute drive to the hospital, so I had decided to labor as long at home as possible on the birthing ball, in the shower, etc.
At the L&D triage, they gave me a ROM test and said it was positive but then were unsure because ROM tests sometimes trigger false positives with blood, so they had to study it under a telescope and then insisted on doing an ultrasound. The triage unit was completely packed and miserable so once they confirmed that after all that time I was only 3cm and that it was just bloody show, we were given the option to be admitted given the timing of the contractions, stay in triage for another couple of hours, or go home. I decided to go home, which was both smart and kind of dumb because it was -2F outside.
Once home, the intensity of my contractions picked up big time. My fiancee went to sleep and my doula stayed up with me as I tried breathing through them, but they were getting even closer together, sometimes even turning into cluster contractions--so we headed back to triage and found out I'd gone from 3 to 5 in about 2 hours, and they admitted us finally. They let me labor in the tub for about 3 hours and the contractions got unbearable at this point. I was checked a second time... 6cm. This is where I nearly lost my shit because I was so disappointed to have only gone up a centimeter in 3 hours with contractions that were literally 1-2 minutes apart and as intense as they were.
There was a lot of pressure to break my water with the promise that things would speed up, but I declined and said I only wanted to be checked again unless there was a significant change in the labor that showed some promise of improvement (water breaking naturally, urge to push). Except the water didn't break. And the urge to push didn't come... until 6PM, seriously 12 hours after being admitted into the hospital at 5cm, water still hadn't broke, but I was having rectal pressure and found I was at 9cm. Finally let them break the water for me. Hadn't slept for about 36 hours at this point, hadn't had anything to eat aside from ice and water in 24 hours... one of the things in my IV (not sure which) was making me incredibly loopy and I was so hungry and sleep-deprived that I was starting to become delirious and didn't have enough energy to push, despite the fact that I kind of needed to.
So what should have been 25 minutes of pushing turned into 2.5 hours of pushing since I kept falling asleep between the contractions initially. They also told me that because he was still sunny-side up that getting him out might be more tricky because he was kind of stuck behind my pelvic bone. And on top of that, they noticed some meconium and so the NICU team had to be called in on standby, which freaked me out a little bit until my doula calmed me down and was like, "We talked about this, it's very normal, half of all babies do this, especially past-due ones. Most of them are fine."
Pushing was hellish and painful, especially as his head got closer to the exit and the ring of fire started to appear. I knew that was a thing but I always assumed it was brief and only lasted one push, not something that could potentially last through 5-6 contractions. Even though I was absolutely exhausted, I pretty much at that point started pushing repeatedly every single time I felt any urgency to.
Baby came out in one big push that felt exactly like I thought it would. I know people say it's a giant relief and all the pain is immediately gone, but it also is the first time you realize, if any damage was done, how wrecked your downstairs area is.
NICU was called in and despite the meconium, he got a 9 on the Apgar, the placenta just kind of flew out without me really having to do any extra pushing, and we had delayed cord clamping along with immediate skin to skin in which I got to rub all that goopy vernix all over him.
A surgical team showed up and without really explaining anything to me, went to town on my "repair"--someone was asking me questions about the baby and I was like, "I'll answer you in a moment, I'm really distracted by how painful this repair surgery is..." The surgeon looked up and was like, "Wait... you don't have an epidural??" "..." "You're feeling all these sharp needles then?" "Yes?" "Oh my god, you just looked so zen with everything that I just assumed... I am SO sorry, we're almost done!"
Jeez. It turns out I had second degree perineal lacerations. I'm not really shocked by this because a lot of my early pushing wasn't very efficient and I was pushing with the wrong muscles. I wasn't able to immediately breastfeed him... we were both so tired from such a long labor that he was just constantly falling asleep and even though he was rooting and even sort of latching, he was falling asleep immediately on my breast.
I also had some sort of issue with my urethra following the delivery where I couldn't seem to pee... I had a sudden need to go and they had to do a catheter to drain my bladder... I had nearly 950ml of fluid drained that had accumulated in just 4 hours, so everyone was crazy impressed with how quickly my kidneys were processing all the fluid from the IVs.
But, all said and done, things are normal and OK today! I'm extremely sore from the perineal tearing and have been taking pretty much whatever medicine they'll give me to help, but it's a real crapshoot (no pun intended).
Routine induction for pre-eclampsia turned into an emergency c-section, but we couldn't be happier. Amelia Esperanza: Born Jan 8th 9:40pm 7lbs 4 oz 19 inches long
So I've only just got around to putting this post together. We have been in our own little world. Chloe Janet Jenkins was born on the 26th of December at 39+1. She was 7lb7oz with a big head apparently. On Christmas day I was up at 5.30 cooked lunch for my family. Went over the top a little. Everyone left around 8 pm my waters broke around 8.30. I had heavy and significant meconium so had to go straight in to labour and delivery. Although I was flooding everywhere constantly I had no contractions. Cervix was barely 1cm and was very long there was no effacement. Because of the levels of meconium. My nice natural delivery went out the window. Straight onto a drip to induce me and that ramped things up quickly. I went up a cm an hour. Which from nothing on a first labour was pretty good progress. She was on continual monitoring and was unstable so I was restricted to staying really still on my back as it's the only way we could keep track of her. They tried a head clip twice but it didn't work until it was time to start pushing. She had decelerations and was showing signs of distress. Turns out she had her cord around her neck. I needed an episiotomy to get her out quickly. Due to our antibody issue we had to have a neonatal doctor at the delivery and I ended up with a bit of a viewing gallery. We had to give up our delayed clamping and physiological after birth delivery but I don't care she's perfect. We arrived at the hospital at 9pm Christmas day and I gave birth at 12.34 on boxing day. So it could have been a lot worse considering there was no progress on my cervix or contractions. We had to stay in for observation but she has done fantastically on her examinations with only very slight jaundice.
Galen Elliott was born on January 5th, 2017, at 1:28pm, weighing 6 lbs 3 oz. That morning, I went to the hospital for an external cephalic version, as I was exactly 37 weeks along and he was still breech. He flipped back to breech after two tries to turn him. On the third try, he stayed head-down, but then his heart rate dropped significantly. It was very tense as the doctor, my husband, and I watched his heart rate. It went up briefly, but then dropped again, so I needed an emergency c-section. I was put under general anesthesia, and our beautiful Galen was born 15 minutes later. He got some great skin-to-skin on daddy before I came out of anesthesia. What a surprise for him to come into this world 3 weeks before we planned! He is healthy and doing great, and we're overjoyed to have him with us.
He's here! Less than 2.5 hrs of labor. Woke up with strong contractions, water broke half hour later. I was yelling at DH to wake up and call an ambulance. Just happened to be snowing like crazy...we barely made it in hospital door when I was screaming on the gurney to take off my pants because his head was out. Had minimal tearing, got stitched up. Needless to say I successfully had my med free VBAC. 6lb 12 oz. No name yet still, he's doing great and BF. No sleep for me yet, my head is spinning. Just so happy and feel blessed. Sorry for bad pic, dim light. ETA: born 1/11/17 2:40 am
Ella Grace was born 1-10-17 at 11:11pm. She is 7lbs 15oz and 20.5 inches long. A 30 hour induction turned into a c section because she was not progressing. We are in love!
Cooper James was born on January 5th at 1:04pm, at 37 weeks 2 days. He weighed 8lbs 10oz and was 21.5 inches long!
On the 4th I had a visit with the perinatologist to check on high fluid levels. He checked out just fine even though the fluid was a bit elevated, and they measured him at 8lbs 15oz. The perinatologist recommended that if I didn't go into labor on my own, that I be induced at 39 weeks. Later that afternoon I saw my regular OB for 37 week check up and she told me one of the labs had come back positive for CMV, a virus. She said between that, the fluid level and his size, they were going to induce me the following morning.
We arrived at the hospital at 6am. I was 4cm, 50% effaced and baby was at -3 station. They started me on pitocin and I alternated between walking the halls and bouncing on the ball. At 11 my dr went ahead and broke my water. Almost 4lbs of fluid came out, it was shocking how much it was! She also checked me and I hadn't had any changes since my 6am check. At 11:30 they let me get back up to walk around. The contractions started to pick up and by noon I asked for the epidural. The contractions were getting really close together and I was trying my best to breathe through them and my husband would rub my low back with each one. At 12:30 the anesthesiologist came in to start the epidural. She did her very best to get it in as quickly as possible, but by 12:45 I started pushing without even meaning to. The nurse quickly had her stop and they laid me back down and rushed the dr in. I was 10cm and baby was on his way out! I panicked! It was all happening so wuickly, but my nurse and anesthesiologist were amazing and calmed me down and told me I could do it and I would be meeting my baby any minute now. My husband was by my side the whole time and told me I was doing amazing and he could see the head,he was almost out. 3 contractions and he came out screaming and crying.
Im still in a bit of disbelief at how fast it all happened. I originally planned to go med free, but once they decided on induction and pitocin I knew I would most likely get the epidural. I'm very happy that it worked out the way it did, and it was an amazing experience. We're absolutely in love with him and big brother has done great so far!
My twins! Born at 37.2 Mono/Di via scheduled ceserean on Jan 10th Oliver&Elliott 6.5 lbs and 6.3 Both are 19 inches. Babies are doing great and omg tandem feeding is hard lol. But we are doing it!
Late to posting around here, but Atticus Richard was born Jan. 5th weighing in at 9lb 10oz. He had some sugar regulating issues because of his size but luckily he stabilized before discharge and didn't have to go to the nicu. His big sister is so thrilled with her new baby brother
We arrived at the hospital at 6am for an induction. Pitocin started around 8:30, water broken around 9am. I was already 4cm 80% effaced when I arrived and contractions came rolling in fast and fierce. Received epidural and a big sigh of relief. Within 10 mins felt pressure, nurse checked and we were good to go.
Doctor came in, transformed the bed and within 2.5 pushes (3 mins) Ryan was in my arms. He had some bruising on his face but is great otherwise.
Big brother is over the moon asking everyone if they want to meet his baby brother, and he was singing lullabys to him while his grandmom was holding him. Too cute. I don't think Ryans big sister even knows he is here haha (she is 1.5yo) she was more excited to see her daddy then he little brother.
Meet Cora Isabelle. She's beautiful and the hubs and I feel like our hearts grew three sizes yesterday! Born on January 14th at 2:01 pm, she is 8 lbs even and 20 inches.
We Went to the doctor for my 40 week checkup and they sent me to the hospital due to low fluid to be induced. We were admitted at 1100 on Friday but didn't start pitocin until 8 pm because there were so many births that day. Labored through the night ok, but by 5 am the pain was too much. I opted for the epidural (I was planning on natural because I was scared of the epidural) and I'm so glad I did! Epidural was amazing! Could still feel and move my legs, just couldn't feel any pain. Labor continued until around 1:30 when the doctor said we should start pushing. After a fast and furious 30 minutes, she came right out!
We are all happy and healthy and are being discharged today. Thanks for the last few months of support ladies! This has been such a great resource as a first time mom. Good luck to everyone!!!!
Our little guy made his entrance unexpectedly on 12/30/16. He was originally due 1/21/2017. I went in to the ER because of severe pain. I was then rushed to L & D where they did an emergency c section because they thought my uterus was possibly rupturing.
Finn was born healthy and crying 7lbs 1 oz and 19inches. We ended up staying in the hospital for a week due to jaundice and a low red blood cell count for baby. These were complications from the antibodies in my blood. But we are home now and doing well! We are so happy our little guy is here!
Wesley John was born 1/19/17. I was due 1/7 and was admitted to the hospital on 1/17/17 to be induced because I went too far past my due date. While it was a long process I am so happy to have my baby boy in my arms.
sorry, the app pretty much deleted my entire post!
Isla Joy was born January 25 at 7:15 pm, weighing 8 lbs 9 oz and measuring 20.5 inches long. I had a scheduled induction for Tuesday the 24th at 7:30 pm and was not dilated at all, I was given cervidil to help soften the cervix and prepare it for dilation once I would be given pitocin. Next day pitocin was given at around 10am and by 5pm I was 9.5 cm dilated and 100% effaced, however due to the rapid progress I opted for the epidural at noon because the contractions were just too sporatic and at one point I had 4 contractions in a row that felt like one 10 minute contraction. At 6 there was still small part of my cervix blocking baby's head from moving down so we started doing practice pushes to see if it was soft enough to allow baby through, seemed to have worked because those practice pushes turned into the real thing. Once baby was crowning, she was out in 4 pushes and our little star was born
William Steven was due 1/16 but decided to come a little early on January 5th at 10:53am weighing 6 lbs and 15 oz and 20" long. Baby and mom are doing very well now but both suffered a slight infection during L&D and had to be on antibiotics for two days.
Sophia Amelia made her appearance after an induction due to high blood pressure and IUGR at 38 weeks. I wasn't progressing passed 7 cm after laboring for 20 hours and her heart rate was dropping with each contraction so we went in for a c-section. I wasn't progressing because she wasn't dropping straight down my pelvis and so she had to be vacuumed out. She arrived at 6:48am on January 12th at 6 lbs 3 oz and 18.5 inches long.
I am so sorry to not have announced it. I've been so busy with my new little guy. I was due January 4th but he decided to come December 21. My water broke at home and i was having contractions every 5 min. I went in a few hours later. I had to be put on pitocin because i wasn't progressing and after your water breaks they need to be born within 24 hours. 17.5 hour labor and 45 minutes of pushing our beautiful healthy son "Eli" was born. Eli was 7lbs 2oz and 20 inches. He is now 8 weeks old and the biggest bundle of joy. He smiles lots and loves to coo already. He loooves looking at lights and oddly enough out the window. He loves being held facing you...always needs to see your face. He is loosing his newborn hair and starting to grow his own. He sleeps AWESOME in his car seat so taking him places has been a breeze.
Am i still welcome here if my baby was born early in December?? :-)
Little Miss Zelda Lee was born January 11th at 7:19 a.m. via c-section. She was 9 pounds 8 ounces and 21 inches long. I was in labor for 29 hours after having been induced and week late. Not to mention my doctor decided to stop the pitocin to see if my body would do the rest of the work on its own and then restarted it after it didn't work. My epidural decided to stop working so that had to be redone as well. They finally decided on the c-section when I watt dilating pass 8 centimeters and my cervix decided it wanted to swell up on me. It was tough (especially since she is my first child) but worth it nonetheless.

Finn was born healthy and crying 7lbs 1 oz and 19inches. We ended up staying in the hospital for a week due to jaundice and a low red blood cell count for baby. These were complications from the antibodies in my blood. But we are home now and doing well! We are so happy our little guy is here!
Due 1/21/17
Carl Howard arrived Jan 15 at 4:10pm. 8 lbs 18.5 inches We are completely in love. ❤️
8lb, 8oz and 22inches
Sophia Amelia made her appearance after an induction due to high blood pressure and IUGR at 38 weeks. I wasn't progressing passed 7 cm after laboring for 20 hours and her heart rate was dropping with each contraction so we went in for a c-section. I wasn't progressing because she wasn't dropping straight down my pelvis and so she had to be vacuumed out. She arrived at 6:48am on January 12th at 6 lbs 3 oz and 18.5 inches long.
