when are you telling work?

Re: when are you telling work?

  • Personally I already told me boss and a few co-workers. I have not told the principal yet or HR. I'm going to wait till 12 weeks for that.

  • @tumbleweed if your plan and your excited for this work I would go forward with it. I would not mention anything about your pregnancy at all! You could mention when you get an offer. When I was pregnant with DD #2 I interviewed to go from running just the preschool to the entire school (including finances). I was only about 14 weeks at the time- not noticeably showing. I did tell them at the time my job was offered and gave them the rest of the details/ how they could work around my absence/ maternity leave.
  • I told everyone at my work when I was 6 weeks. Because of my 2 previous losses I wanted to be open and up front with the them this time and also have their support should I miscarry again.

I do feel kind of terrible though because my boss was planning a 3 day weekend carribbean cruise for the staff in January and then plans had to change because of Zika concerns. So now we're planning a cabin rental in the smoky mountains. I'm sure everyone is thrilled with the change in plans.

I told my associate teacher right away just to make it easier when I had any early symptoms. Now that we've had the u/s and a strong heartbeat I'm going to tell the principal on Monday.
I think he will take it well, but I'm nervous on how the pregnancy will ride out at school. It's only been open 6 years and we have NEVER had a pregnant lead teacher. Anyone who has gotten pregnant or had a child under 3 (pre-k age) has left pretty quickly. It's a very demanding school to work at, and I will be taking maternity for the first 1-2 months of next year and I'm not sure how they will take that. Legally, they have to offer me the same job, but I don't know what will actually happen. Then once I do return I don't know how they will make it work for me to pump. They've done it in the past with assistants and office staff, but never a lead teacher so it just makes me nervous to be the first one.
  • I told just my boss about a week ago (almost at 10 weeks) when we were having a meeting just the two of us anyway. Work has been super stressful and we've had a lot more responsibility thrown on us lately, and she was basically just asking me to please not quit lol. So I figured it was a good time to tell why the stress was getting to me extra! She took it well and was really excited. I'm Facebook friends with most everyone else at work, so I'll just let them find out in a few weeks when I announce on Facebook.

My BFF coworker knows but that's it. I plan on keeping it quiet till probably mid-November. My next appointment is October 23 and I won't tell before then I know that. I'll be 13 weeks then. In Arab culture it'd be super easy to hide any growing bump so I'll see how I feel. If I decide to wait longer, it won't be hard to hide.

  • @starphish18 our policy states we are permitted to pump during our morning after noon and lunch breaks. But my boss decided that meant 15 mins 15 mins and a half hour and I was and exclusive pumper so I pumped for at least 20 mins each time plus the clean up and set up so he said I am only allowed to pump twice a day. I fought it up to his boss but never got to HR about it. this time I plan on going to HR prior to returning to work. I am not dealing with that type of drama again. Also they didn't like that I was going to the rooms provided by the hospital to pump that the travel and wait times ( if someone was in them) was taking too much time. I'm like you cant make me use a bathroom and I am not going to pump in our xray rooms where there could be all kinds of disease so they told me to use a special consult room that one of our radiologists wanted built for his purposes. The radiologist eventually kicked me out of there because he needed that room avail anytime so then it became perfectly acceptable to be pumping in the other rooms again. It was complete and utter bs and I wont stand for it again. It is part of why I stopped at 7 months. I know my rights were trampled on and I let it happen.
  • As soon as I have told family, I will tell work. Still not exactly sure when/how I will tell family.

  • @Yiggle09 '09 that sucks!  I had a similar issue at with DS.  No one fought me on it, but there was just nowhere for me to go to pump and with my role it was almost impossible to find enough time to do it.  I made it 5 months after I went back but just barely.  In the end my supply had dropped significantly because I didn't pump enough and it was to the point where I was having to wake up at like 4 in the morning to get an extra pump in each day.  If I go back to work after this baby (still up in the air) I am definitely going to put my foot down about it.
  • @RainyDays86 I got mastitis twice and lost 10 oz it was heart breaking. I am definitely going to advocate for myself stronger this time around.
  • I told work almost immediately. I do a lot of lifting and things that I don't think will be safer when I'm further along and I wanted to prepare them and ask them to change me to cashier.

  • I didn't want to tell any of my coworkers until after the first trimester, but it was like they could smell it on me! One told me I was showing without even asking if I was pregnant, my boss asked me today, and I've had various other coworkers joke about it lately. I haven't even told my parents or in-laws yet!

  • arels483 , same thing happened to me! As I started mentioning it to various co-workers, I keep hearing "I thought so!" and things of the like. One of my co-workers said "I knew it! 2 months ago I had a feeling you were pregnant and I was right!!"....well, I'm only 10 weeks along, so you likely were not "right".

  • I had to miss two days of work in the last week due to excruciating migraines. One I even ended up in urgent care for. My coworkers are all very concerned and are asking if it is stress. Although I really want to share the news I am only 7 weeks along and would like to wait until my first ultrasound at 10 weeks. I did tell my boss yesterday because I don't want him under the impression that it is stress either. He was very understanding and excited for our family. I may or may not make it to my goal without spilling the beans.
  • I had to tell right away because it's in our manual. It sucks and I wanted to keep it to myself but whatever. If something ends up happening they'll have to know about that, too, so it's way worse to have not told and then all of a sudden have to tell them the whole story.

  • I've known my boss forever and we even go to church together, so I told her at 9 weeks, mainly because I didn't want her to worry that I wasn't being my normally bubbly self. But also because I'd already had to miss work due to appointments. She was delighted, and it's fun to have someone know. Plus she checks in to see how I'm feeling, which is sweet. We probably won't really tell anyone else (with the exception of close friends & family, who we told at 10 weeks) until 14 or 15 weeks.

  • I have my 12 week appt Friday, so I am meeting with my HR manager after to tell her, discuss benefits, and get her feedback on what to say to my business leaders. I am only 3 months into my new job so I want them to know why I keep cutting out for appointments. That and I seem to have popped this week and I only have so many dresses that hide my stomach.

  • Next week is my performance review with my boss. I'll be 11 weeks but it seems silly to wait one more week when we'll already be meeting face to face and I usually work from home. So I'll be telling then.
  • I told my boss right away. In my job, I need to go into people's homes, and so my coworker told me that she found it helpful to tell them as soon as possible so that I don't get sent into any homes that may be too risky for me. It has also helped a lot for those mornings that I need to come in a little later, and when I need to leave for appointments.

  • I told my boss last week, at 15 weeks.  Prior to that, I only told his PA and my PA, so that they can cover for me when I am not around, which they did spectacularly.  One morning I was really unwell and someone important was looking for me, they made up a completely nonsense meeting that I am supposedly at... was lovely of them.   I just didnt want people to know, not yet.... Boss was so happy for me and he said I should take as much time off as I need, etc.  Felt very supported.

I havent told my team yet, I think I will tell at the xmas party (unless I start showing beforehand), by that time I will have agreed with bosses on who will be heading up my team whilst I am on mat leave... the thing is there are quite a few women in my team and I guarantee they already noticed that I got fatter!!!!

  • @smallanimal if for some reason you've decided to join May '16 with an April due date, I don't blame you!  We're a pretty awesome bunch.  However, I think you may have accidentally posted while dirty lurking

(not meant to be snarky, I totally lurk on June '16, July '16, and whatever month is currently having their babies and have come dangerously close to responding to a thread by accident)

  • I'll be 12 weeks Friday, but almost had to tell yesterday due to how sick I was. I'm just holding out until I have my 12 week appointment and hear the heartbeat one more time.
  • @rainydays86 I accidentally posted in June while I was lurking... eek!! I went to look back to see if anyone responded and I couldn't find my post... which is when I figured it out.

  • My immediate supervisor has known since 6 weeks.  I told the rest of my chain of command yesterday when I hit 12 weeks.  I'm hoping it filters through the company because I hate telling people myself.  I'm rocking a non-maternity shirt today that's really making my bloaty bump stand out.  I feel so free!

  • I just now told my second job.  I'm a nanny and have two different families I work for.  The first family had to know because of taking off all the time for doctor appointments.  I finally told the second family yesterday and their response was well what are your plans for after? I was completely blindsided! I have no idea.. haha
  • Waiting until my next appointment in 2 weeks. Had a molar 2 years ago and a D&C last year so I want to be sure we make it past 9 weeks this time.

I didn't realise that you could only post in your own birth month board.  I wasn't posting accidentally, I was interested in what you guys said and then wanted to share what I thought.

  • I told my boss and the other members of the management team very early because I needed to, but just had to share this completely awkward story about telling the rest of my office --I went to my 12 week ultrasound and got the results for my Panorama at the ultrasound. I was still in shock that I was having a girl when I got back to the office (convinced in my head it was a boy, maybe because I already have a boy). I also HATE telling people that I'm pregnant or having people make a big deal out of it, so I guess I just wanted to rip the band aid off...I stood in the middle of my open office space and announced to the 15 or so coworkers in the area "hey guys, in case you hadn't heard already, I'm pregnant and I found out today it's a girl". Awkward, but I guess it got the job done? But now that everyone knows, I've already had 3 women ask to touch my belly (uh...it's always rude and awkward, but my bump is small, so it's EXTRA awkward because it's half bump-half squish) and 1 man scold me for eating sushi. It was poached salmon, but I didn't tell him it was cooked, I just said "yep, and it was delicious".

  • I'm going to spill next week-have 12 week appointment this week and am so ready to be wearing maternity clothes already! I tried to hide it, luckily I have this week off work because it is getting pretty obvious with the blump action
  • I've told my job already, only because I was out sick a lot and didn't want them to think I was slacking off.. plus I'm on a zofran pump.. I knew they would ask questions as soon as they saw that..
  • I've had to tell a few people at work because we have a very aggressive student who I can't work with because he hits and throws chairs and I needed to explain why I can't work with him. I had to tell a whole other group of people tonight because we're working to figure out supports for this kid and I had to explain why I can't do it.
To be honest, I'm kind of annoyed that I had to tell before I was ready and in such a non-exciting way.
  • I'm 12w4d and I have told many coworkers. I told my program director today, and will probably wait to tell my principal.

That sucks but totally understandable. I just told one of my closest friends the other day. She just had her first earlier this year and she told me that since she works with agressive kids and is trained to restrain them if needed, she was supposed to tell her coworkers when she found out. It wasn't until the need to restrain arised when she blurted out that she couldn't do it because she was pregnant. Such great timing and the coworker was so upset since its already a tense situation. Can you imagine?!

  • I don't know when to tell! We had an offsite in a remote office last week and I was so sick but it was early so I told everyone I had the stomach flu. Now I feel like they'll think I was lying. Maybe I'll wait til after the Panorama test results, which will be next week. If not then, definitely before 11/20, which is when we're taking clients to a Football game in Seattle and everyone will wonder why I'm not drinking. But I don't know how to say it because I've only been at this job a few months and my inclination is to be like "it wasnt planned!" But that's wrong and weird so hopefully I'll be able to be a normal person and just tell her matter of factly.
