Middle name for Madigan

Although not my first choice, my husband and I compromised on Madigan for our little girl. She'll go by "Madi". My first choice was Delaney - so we chose that as a middle name. Now I'm thinking its a little too long and jumbled together. Any suggestions for a simpler middle name? Our last name is one syllable.

I'm curious how this is the compromise. Personally I would keep looking, it's clunky and as a surname is derived from the Gaelic word for dog. 

If you decide to keep Madigan,  I would go dimple, feminine and classic to give her some options. Claire, Dawn, Eve, Faye, Jane, June,  Pearl, Rose, Ruth.

I feel like Madison Delaney or Madeline Delaney flows a bit better. Madigan is just harder to say in general and very surnamey. I think she will get a lot of Madison errors. That said if you are 100% sold which it didn't sound like I think Madigan Delaney is fine

Thanks for your input. It's growing on me. But it was the best of many other names on the list. Plus my husband loves it sooooo much it's hard to fight him on it. Believe it or not the "little dog" was a selling point for the name - since we lost our beloved pup a few weeks into our pregnancy. 

I was having second thoughts that Madigan Delaney was too surnamey- I am still going back and forth on it!

PS - lesson learned - when reading names from a baby book highlight the ones you like ahead of time and only read off those ones as options. Lol!

Madigan makes me thing of Madmartigan from Willow. *shrugs*


I love Delaney and I think it would pair well with an 'M' first name such as Madeline, Megan, Madison, Margaret, etc.

I think Madigan is cute, especially since you like the meaning. I think it would sound better with a short middle name, but I don't hate Madigan Delaney.

It is very surnamey but I feel like you don't love the first name compromise so you should at least love the middle name.

But personally I think you should keep looking. I'm all for compromising I had to with my kids but I never settled for something that was growing on me.H and I both gave up a lot of our first choices but both loved what we settled on. Your posts just sound like you aren't there and I don't think that is fair

Not of a fan of Madigan, you can do better. I keep hearing Mad Again which is not very appealing, in addition to the dog translation. Delaney is fine with it but I would keep searching for something else you can agree on and actually like as opposed to compromise on.

I am not sure how to pronounce Madigan... like cardigan? Maybe you could go with Delaney Madigan... I know you asked for middle name input but I really do not like the first name so it is difficult to come up with mn - and the nn Madi feels very over used.

Even though they are both 3 syllable names, the stress patterns are different (MAD-uh-gin duh-LANE-ee) so that helps break it up. I think Delaney is a great choice!

I think with a unique name like Madigan (maybe it's a foreign name I don't know), I'd go with something simple like Jane, Marie (though the alliteration may be too much), Joy, Ann, etc. However, I see nothing wrong with the flow of Madigan Delaney.
