@vinerie It's been a while since I used prefolds because we switched to pockets once my son was eating solids, and we haven't started yet with this one. But if my memory serves me correctly, they always felt pretty wet even with only one pee in them. You'll probably want to size up soon anyway if the newborn ones are pretty snug, but I think what you're describing is normal for a prefold.
@evalynn24 Did you pre wash your inserts according to the instructions? Pre washing helps prep the inserts for absorption, so if they aren't at full absorption strength yet, that could be causing problems. The outside lining on pockets/ AIOs is waterproof, but any number of things can cause it to leak, such as the inserts not being prepped, not having a proper fit around the thighs, if the insert is not all the way tucked in and a bit of it is outside the liner it can wick moisture to baby's clothes, etc. Issues with your wash routine (not using the right detergent or whatever) can also cause leakage, but that probably isn't your issue because those types of problems don't usually arise until you've been using your stash for several months.
ETA: if it was a giant poop, it might also have just been a blowout. We had waaaay fewer blowouts with cloth than disposables, but still had a few here and there.

I did prewash them, but I don't recall seeing instructions with them. I'll look online and make sure I do it again (he only fits in a couple right now anyway). I'm pretty sure everything else was good: inserts not hanging out, tight enough around legs, etc. thank you!

CD mamas: our little one completely saturates the prefolds that we have every time we check the diaper. The other day I changed his diaper, nursed him for 10 minutes and could tell that he had soiled diaper, so I changed it again. In that 10 minutes the diaper was completely saturated again! It seems like one pee saturates the diaper. Is this normal? The service gave us newborn prefolds and they're tight on him ( he was 9 pounds, 13 ounces at birth, so he's on the bigger side already… )so maybe they are just too small and he needs a bigger size. But I feel discouraged about cloth diapers because every time we change them they're completely soaked through.
When LO wets her prefolds, I can feel the wetness from outside the diaper, but it doesn't seem to get on the cover. So I don't think it's a problem?

Well, it seems like a wet diaper against the skin can't be a good thing…I mean, we change pretty frequently but even with frequent changing's it's still always completely saturated. I was wondering if this was irritating his skin or just unsanitary…

Yeah I think one of the downsides of prefolds is that you do have to be a bit more vigilant about regular changes- I always aimed to change them every 2ish hours or when I heard a poop. Although even when I didn't manage to do it this frequently he never got a diaper rash with prefolds, and he got constant rashes with any brand of disposable we tried except one obscure brand you can only buy online So it must not have been too irritating?
I use stay dry liners with my flats and prefolds to keep the wetness off.You can get a dozen off of amazon pretty cheaply. Bummis, kangacare, and bumgenius are all good brands for these...
At first I was a huge fan of cloth diapering but I'm having some difficulty. I'm fighting hard not to give up.
We can't go over 2 hours without needing to change. Prefolds or inserts. This is especially frustrating at night. We use both GroVia and Gdiapers covers. I've even tried doubling up. I rest ripped my inserts. I'm failing
@Charla1224 Changing every 2 hours during the day is normal, sounds like you just need to find a more successful night system. I have had very good luck using Kawaii baby Goodnight Heavy Wetter diapers, and they're relatively cheap which is nice. I wash every other day, used a stash of 4 of those the entire time my son was in night diapers and they're still in great shape for my daughter. I have heard that they don't fit many people's babies until 3ish months, but I have exceptionally fat babies. I also know some people use fitteds + inserts + covers for night. If you google advice smackdown cloth diapers there's some good posts. Worst case scenario you could always use a disposable at night and cloth during the day, you'd still be saving yourself a lot of money.
Fitteds and covers are perfect for night. I used the thirsties brand fitteds on DS1 when he was a toddler too and they held a lot. With the wee ones since we are up so often to feed and DS2 poops all the time I have to change anyway each feeding, about 2-4 hrs and the prefolds get wet but contain everything. Make sure nothing sticks out of the cover so there's no wicking of the moisture. A wool cover might help too for a heavy wetter. @Charla1224

I second the "disposables when necessary" advice: every cloth diaper you use is one less in a landfill, after all.
But also, I've had lots of luck with my BumGenius Freestyle All-in-Ones, which I love and are so easy to use! They work once your LO is ten lbs, and will last through potty training, so at $16-19 they are a great buy.
Today is the our first day CDing! Very excited and kind of nervous. We had to wait because I had to relearn how to use my right foot (pinched a nerve during labor and I still can't lift it or feel half of it). So now that I'm more mobile we're starting! We are trying prefolds and Thirsty's covers first; but I've got a few pocket diapers that I'd like to try too!
I found the light! Well. Really I found a cloth diaper store in my area and found some solutions. I got a couple fitteds I think will be a huge night time help. I also stripped my inserts and they're working better now. And last, I think it's best for me to use pockets. I thought hybrids would be more cost effective but they're a hassle to change. Pockets are easier to have ready to go, I can adjust the absorbency, and they're more affordable than AIOs (plus they dry quicker.

I'm actually doing disposables at night until he stops pooping so much! I've found that even with disposables they really need to be changed quite often. For longer lasting dryness I have found that Blueberry mini deluxe (pockets) are the best! They have actually just discontinued them so you can get them for about $14 apiece on Bohemian Baby right now. I only have four but imagine that would be enough to use just at nighttime.
