Eliana = Ellie?

I really like the name Eliana, but would prefer to avoid the over popularity of Ellie. What are the chances she could just be an Eliana? We actually don't have any Ellie's in any of our current kid circles, but there are 3 Ellas between daycare and soccer. They all go by Ella, not Ellie.

Re: Eliana = Ellie?

  • You could certainly only call her Eliana,  but you have limited ability to control what others will call her and what she herself will prefer to be called.

    That said Ana could possibly be a good nickname option if you want to discourage the obvious Ellie.
  • Of all the names going towards the nn Ellie I feel like Eliana is one of the most natural ones and more likely to form with little guidance or push towards it.

  • I think people will lean towards Ellie, but if there are a ton of Ellie's and they need to distinguish she might get called Eliana.  I know a lot of Catherine's and Elizabeth's that all figured out different NNs when younger to avoid all having the same name.  Agree with PP, you could use Ana to avoid Ellie.
  • At some point you may lose control to avoid it but if you start out being firm and always calling her by her full name other people will follow suit. Maybe by the time she's in school the Ellie trend will be played out.
  • I have a Francesca and everyone said she's be called Fran. She's still small, but so far, it hasn't happened.  Eliana was or second choice, and i LOVE it. Gorgeous.
  • She will be called Ellie by her peers. It's unavoidable. Pretty name though!
  • I know both, and I know plenty of people who stick to Eliana if that's how she introduces herself.

  • I always thought Elle was a cute nm!! Maybe that could be an alternative to people saying Ellie!
