Re: Breastfeeding Thread

  • @Cwyatt2571 I was told if you have a hind and fore milk imbalance to massage your breast before you start. Never tried it because my milk is pretty even and would start spraying before it even got out of my bra if I did it... But hope it helps?

Is he gassy? I wouldn't worry about it unless it was also accompanied by fussiness and extra gas. We've had a few here and there. I also think your supply isn't really well established til some time between 4-6 weeks so it might be related to that

He's not gassy anymore than normal. They are starting to turn more yellow again. I'm wondering if it had something to do with apple juice. I started drinking a bunch of it and that's the only real change I've made.

@Cwyatt2571 well that's good he isn't gassy or uncomfortable! It could be diet related but if there's no discomfort it's probably nothing to worry about!

  • I noticed LO had green-er poops on days that I hadn't eaten as much. I have a hard time keeping up with eating, surprisingly.
  • Anyone pumping only? We just got the okay to let LO sleep through the night where we were waking every 3 hours. Anyone have experience on pumping at night? I'm scared to go more than 4 hours in case my supply drops which it did once before. I don't get much milk to begin with (total of around 2-2.5oz every 3 hrs), so I don't want it to decrease. Any tips? I took fenugreek till I ran out and it helped build me back up to that, but it's still not much compared to some of you!

I only pump, and don't wake up at night to pump. In the mornings when I wake up I'm kinda soaked though :-/

I only pump and wake up twice at night since LO does too. I'm not sure on supply because I had delayed a few times last week (woke up once) and felt like it did affect my supply (super painful too!). During the day I do try to pump at least every 3 hrs. I was going to try taking the lactation plus pills but need to figure out the cause of LOs gassiness first.
  • Gotchamm I'm just paranoid and way too fixated on numbers xD..last night I took 2 four hour stretches but now feel like I need to pump loads...guess it will just be somethin to track and see :)

I can't freaking eat normal anymore because there is always something (unidentified) that is causing LO to have tons of gas, spit, and now diarrhea. It's like my milk is poisoning him. So frustrating!
  • Baby gulps and gulps on my boob especially at night .my letdown is too strong for her I think. I also think it's the cause of her gas so I gave her my milk in a dr Browns bottle with a premie nipple and she still tries to gulp sometimes but it's much better.
    Do i ......
pump before I feed her a bit through my first letdown? I don't see that going well as I'm sure she will fuss because she is impatient.

exclusively pump but still BF at night to keep that closeness and bed time routine ?
i have no idea when I'm supposed to pump as I only do it once a day on the opposite boob she is using in the morning and only get 2-3 ounces

I hate pumping so I would keep bf'ing as normal but try a position in which LO is even with the nipple. My DS seemed to get used to my fast letdown and doesn't have an issue like 95 percent of the time. At the beginning I would pump once a day in the morning, just one side. Now I'm doing it before I go to sleep instead and doing both sides. I think 2-3 oz per side per pumping is really good.
  • @jonesl12 my LO does the same. I've started unlatching him when I feel let down coming and covering my boob with a breast pad until it calms down. I've seen my milk shoot a solid 6 inches so I bet it's what was making his gasp and gulp when eating. I've only been doing this for a few days, but I think it's working. At first he would get really mad when I took him off, but he's getting used to it.
  • She gets so mad when I pull her off! I just started it today so we will see how it goes  :#

I used to pump at night but I get an extra ounce of I do it first thing in the am . No clue why.
  • Omg. I leak through my clothes constantly. I use breast pads! What are you ladies doing?

T hated it when I first started, but I'll do anything to stop this gas! Make sure to get pads or a towel in there quick. The first time I tried, I shot Thomas in the face  :/

Bamboobies! I have a crazy heavy letdown and soak everything if I get even the slightest bit too full, but I have yet to leak through these (even if the inside is completely soaked).

I wish I could feel myself letting down when nursing! Poor DS coughs and chokes every time. Oops.

How long has everyone's nursing sessions been?
  • I delivered two weeks ago and I had no problem with milk supply. I was exclusively breastfeeding, but couple days ago my right breast was very painful, so i started pumping. Yesterday i was diagnoised with mastitis, still I used nipple shield and my baby fed from it. Since last night until now, my right breast is empty not producing milk. I tried pumping and nursing, no result.

I'm so worried. Please any suggestions?

Always offering it first might help.

Mourning basically all of my shirts and sheets. :(

(but seriously, I've given up. I make sure to always have breast pads in, but I wake up soaked through them, through my bras and shirts, with huge wet spots on the bed.)
How long are u sleeping at a stretch? I did this some with my first but now with .you 5th I don't even need the pads.... at all. But I never ever go without a nursing bra..... either a regular underwrite nursing bra or a soft sleeping nursing bra

    It will get better!
  • Just started taking Fenugreek yesterday, because I pump and my son has been eating as if he was about to go into hibernation but I haven't been able to match the demand. I supplement with formula but what used to be 1/4th formula had recently become like 3/4th formula from how much he eats!

ANYWAY this morning I pumped double my usual supply! I'm impressed. I hope it continues like this because I didn't love how much formula I had been giving him.
  • @Missingchampagne Wow! Was the fenugreek in tablet or tea form?

I made lactation cookies yesterday and my boobs felt fuller than usual.

  • The same same thing is happening to me! I feed him for about 45 min and he's always still hungry afterwards. I've just started taking fenugreek and noticed my supply has increased a bit. Only noticeable when I pump though.

Tablets, the cheap ones on Amazon not the combinations with other things intended for breast feeding. I took 3 over the course of the day, though it says you can take 6.
  • @Missingchampagne Thats awesome! I took it till the bottle was empty...def. Didn't see an increase like that so soon! I feel like my supply went up but still nothing substantial... I wonder if its worth trying these cookies I hear everyone talking about?

Any recommendations on a good but not too expensive hand pump?
  • I have the medela hand pump and it works pretty well. I used it when I was engorged and my milk had just come in but haven't used it much since.  It's around $20-30

I second the medela manual pump.  I used it a couple dozen times with my first and started using it a couple times with this LO and it works great for me!!!

I was intrigued so I baked a batch a couple of days ago. I EBF so I can't tell if I have more per se but my boobs felt fuller than usual. In any case, you'll have some delicious oatmeal cookies. :#

Haha sounds good and is worth the shot! What recipe did you use?
  • @BeatboxBaby I used the first hit of my search 'lactation cookies recipe' :) It's number one for a reason right?

@Missingchampagne ..... how much is he getting in each bottle. Remember.... the rule of thumb is 1 ounce per one hour. So he should really only be doing like 3 ounces every 3 hours....

    Don't get discouraged

Earlier this week I switched to almond milk to see if DSs stomachaches and gas improved since pedi keeps insisting it's my diet. I am happy to say I have seen some improvement and he seems a lot happier. My mom on the other hand does not seem convinced and thinks taking away milk will do him worse in the long run. I'm still eating other dairy in small amounts and combined with other foods. Not drinking cow milk is the only difference. His BMs have also changed to not so many but still a healthy quantity and color. Happy baby = happy mama.
  • Lol. I had to switch to cows milk from almond milk because I felt like almond milk was bothering him.

I've been staying away from obvious dairy as well (milk, cheese, ice cream) and drinking almond milk also.  I think it's making a difference.
  • I haven't ready through all of the pages yet but I did want to let you all know of a vegetable called "chayote". It looks like a pear and is sold mostly everywhere. It helps with milk supply. Simply boil it, take the skin off, and eat it. It really tastes like nothing so even better. With DS1, it helped with my supply within 2 days. I was up from 2oz to 5oz. With DS2, I have a lot of milk so i haven't had to use it. Hopefully this helps someone!
  • Has anyone used those alcohol testing strips for breast milk before? I'm planning a date night with DH and I'd like to have a drink or two and I'm getting so much conflicting advice on when/how/what is safe & I thought I'd use those for good measure. Just wondering if anyone has used them before?

If you can drive, you can breastfeed, generally speaking. There is no need to pump and dump, except for your comfort, because alcohol leaves your breast milk in the same way that it exits your bloodstream. I really wouldn't stress it.

Yesterday was my 30th. It was also my brother in law's wedding, which we celebrated at a beach house the family rented out. I hadnt had a proper drink since being PP and finally felt comfortable enough to try, especially given the circumstances. I pumped two days prior and had 4 packets of breast milk ready to go for LO. I BF for an hour and had a wine glass sized champagne immediately after. And then god said "to hell with yo plan!!!".

LO was completely unsatisfied with the bottles. We are pretty positive it wasn't gas related, we made sure to feed him in an upright position with the bottle parallel to the floor and a slow nipple. He went thru 3 oz, 2 oz, and 4 oz before finally putting an end to screaming his head off. Is this normal? I understand that with BFing he is probably comforted more with the suckling and because it also takes three times as long on comparison, at least in our case. No matter what we did he seemed to plow right through the bottles in record times--mere minutes for each one. We stopped to burp him after every ounce. I'm just wondering what we're doing wrong or if LO is just not ready? Or we have unrealistic expectations?? Lol. He was just beyond POed. I'm just destined to never drink again probably.
