Re: Breastfeeding Thread

  • Turns out my oversupply may not have actually been over supply. Baby isn't gaining enough weight. LC thinks the nipple shield (she was a chewer) was preventing her from draining me all the way and left her without a full belly. And so I would get engorged and pump the rest out (maybe some over supply). But now we are going without the shield and eating as much as possible through Monday for another weight check. Hopefully she is at least up to birthweight then!

How much weight is everyone gaining? Just curious. In four weeks since we left the hospital, baby has gained 3 lb and 3-4 inches. From all I've read, that is double what is normal. He doesn't look fat or anything, but he is definitely longer and all around larger!
Peter has his 4 week check up on Monday. He's gained 1 lb 9 oz from his birth weight but didn't grow in inches at all, still at 19 inches. His head got a little bigger though.
My DD is a month today and at her dr appointment today she weighed 9#1oz 22 inches
when we left the hospital a month ago she was 6#14oz 18 inches ( they measured her height wrong at the hospital though ) and I was told that her weight gain was normal so I wouldn't worry as they all gain at their own pace

We met with the LC today because we've been working on getting back to birth weight and getting off of the shield.  She lost a pound when we left the hospital, gained four ounces, lost two, and has now gotten back up to 8.3 (working toward 8.9).  Pedi and LC are optimistic we'll get back up there by our next dr. appointment on Wednesday.  It's getting better, but I'll be relieved when we hit the magic number!
  • So we've started our suck training crash corse. I've got a feeding tube hooked up to my thumb and making him suck on my thumb with it all the way toward the soft pallet. We'll do this a couple times and go back to the breast and see if that breaks him of his horrible sucking on nipple only habit!

We did sucking exercises with L even before her tongue tie was released, and they definitely seemed to help. Not sure what all you are doing, but the ones we did were like non-feeding "games."

    Good luck!

  • We've been doing them since he was a week old. We just had the ties released this week. He is just over a month old now and won't do the exercises anymore. So we have to give him an incentive. But he is still not moving his tongue correctly. I think part of the tie was missed. I went to the best guy in the area (people come from the surrounding states to see him) but no one is perfect right? I emailed them to ask if I was doing something wrong because there was no improvement whatsoever and they told me he didn't know how to use his new muscles yet, so we are doing the exercises. But I feel like even if the new muscle thing was the case, now that we are working so hard, there should be improvement. We are going to try all weekend, if there is no improvement, it will hopefully be addressed at the follow up visit.
  • Thanks. I just feel a huge drive to make it work! That and we don't have extra money for formula and I really don't like all the time spent bonding with a machine (pumping). I love the feeling of nursing ( other than the sharp pinching scream inducing pain). And if I'm not cracked and bloody...
  • Do any of your LOs reject your boobs, possibly due to taste? Elli wouldn't eat all afternoon, every time I tried she would keep her mouth open and shake her head across my nipple. Finally I pumped some and fed her through a syringe because it had been almost 5 hours of her crying/sleeping in the moby/ refusing to eat. After I fed her a few syringes full of breast milk (she gulped them down) I wiped my nipples clean with a cloth and she ate just fine. It was a super warm day and we were outside, I'm wondering if I was sweating and she didn't like the taste of it?

It's so frustrating when your baby won't eat!

Lucy hates the taste/texture of Lanolin AND Earth Mama Nipple Butter. I have to make sure to wipe it off well or else she makes a *yuck* face and won't latch.
  • Eliot shakes his head with his mouth open all the time, but it's usually because he's so excited to eat. I used to think it was him refusing the nipple...

I'm getting a bit concerned with my supply. I will be 3 wks pp on Monday and just last week I was getting between 4-6 oz at a time (combined) I had to delay pumping a few times this week and since then I am now maxing out at 4 oz if I'm lucky. I usually pump every 2-3 hrs. I started drinking the tea again and I'm hoping I won't have to use up my frozen stash.

For those of you who give your LOs a bottle how much do you give them for a feeding? My baby is 3 weeks old and I am EBF but I pump once a day to build a supply for if I am away from baby. Today my DH had to give her a bottle of my milk and we had no idea how much to put in it. My DH said she finished the bottle quickly even though he stopped to burp her and tried to slow her down. I got home about an hour later and she wanted to nurse and nursed for about 10 minutes (before I pumped). About an hour and a half after that she projectile vommitted. She often spits up but has never vommitted. Was her tummy just too full? She nursed about half an hour later and seems fine otherwise. Maybe I need a slower bottle? We're currently using the medela calma that came with my PISA.

I believe I gave about 2 1/2 oz at that time. At one month, she's taking that plus nursing before bed so I'm going to add an extra ounce to tomorrow's bottle. She only pukes if she gets too much so it could be that the nipple is too fast or she may have wanted to nurse for comfort and then gotten milk, causing her to be overfull - especially if you didn't pump when she got the bottle.

The last time I saw my LC was at 2 weeks old, and at that time she told me that once baby reaches 2 weeks old they should be eating about 1 oz every hour. So if she eats every 3 hours then she should take about 3 oz at each feeding.
Now my baby is 1 month old and when i give her a bottle she eats between 3.5 and 4.5 oz and she typically eats every 3-4 hours. (I breastfeed mostly, but usually give her at leaat 1 bottle a day)
As for the bottles, I got Dr. Brown 4oz bottles with the stage 1 nipples. Its what my LC had recommended to use for bottle training while still breastfeeding.

LO has taken anything between 1-4oz depending how long he sleeps but it's usually around 2.5. Spit ups/vomitting didn't really start till I had to give him the bottle (started with avent) but got better with dr brown. If he drinks too fast he will spit up. I try to burp him about every ounce and keep him upright for awhile after.
  • He will usually drink 2 oz from bottle at a time. We had a puking incident yesterday that I believe was a result of over eating (nursing). No real clue though.

DS is three weeks and currently takes 3.5 oz every 3-ish hours when he is fed by bottle.

Thanks everybody. She had about 3oz from the bottle so I think it was the nursing soon after and speed of the bottle that was the culprit. I will look into trying the dr.browns as well.

  • DS often acts like he wants to eat when he has a tummy ache from gas especially after bottle feeding. Try having you daughter in the seated position and the bottle parallel withe the floor so only a tiny bit is getting into the nipple. Also take frequent breaks. This slows her down. When we did it, we could draw our son out to ten-fifteen minutes. He didn't seem ravenous afterword. ( you may have known all that already... )

this! DS does it too. Even the pedi confused it with being hungry.

My DS does this as well. The pacifier is a lifesaver!

We've given a bottle twice.  The first time I had no idea how much so put 4 oz in and he ate it all and spit up a bunch of it. During that bottle I pumped and got about 2.5 oz maybe a little closer to three.  He got that yesterday morning while I pumped and it was the just about perfect.  I also pumped that much again so I would guess he's taking about 2.5 - 3 oz per feeding.  Not sure if you're using a pacifier but you may want to have your DH try that after she finishes, she may just still want to suck.

This is how our LC  taught us to give our baby a bottle, as we are were supplementing along with breast-feeding and this would make him work for it and make it take longer. However, we are using the Medela bottles and so he gets a lot of air and we have to stop frequently to burp him. I am considering buying the Dr. Brown  after reading about their venting system.

However, it seems like the Dr. Browns would be a pain to clean, anybody care to comment on that?

  • I just got Dr Brown bottles after using Avent and Tomee Tippee.

I dont think they're that much of a hassle to clean at all.

They help a lot with reducing the mess our baby makes when she eats. She likes to spit milk out of the corner of her mouth, even with the low flow nipples.

I can't comment on the gas issue between the bottles, because we haven't run into gas issues yet.

Dr brown bottles don't take that much longer to clean. I don't mind it.
  • So after a 24 hour suck training intensive to learn how to use the muscles that were supposedly freed from a tongue tie, nothing's changed. He still doesn't pull and suck on anything but the nipple and it pinches terribly. The only thing that improved is that the 24 hour period let my nipples heal a bit. I feel dejected and hopeless and pumping that entire time was a pain in the butt.

We use dr. Brown's to give a bottle in the evening...the level one nipples seem a bit fast but DD adjusts and rarely throws up (maybe twice ever). I don't find them any more difficult to clean than my pump parts.
  • @ashleymarie1027 they are kind of a pain to clean. I like cleaning our ventaires better and they also help with gas.

But they aren't so bad to clean that you should rule them out. We like them.

If she is still making a mess with Dr Browns bottles, have you tried their preemie flow nipples? It helped with my first daughter.

She's doing way better now that she's adjusted to getting the bottle but the first couple of times were scary! I didn't know they had premie nipples but that is very good to know.
  • The avent natural bottles with a 0 flow nipple and dr browns with a premie nipple seem to work best for my DD when DH gives her a bottle twice a week

We went and got the dr. Browns bottles with the level 1 nipples, way better! Thank you so much for all the advice.

On another note, I took her to the clinic today because at 3 weeks she was looking a little yellow. She had phototherapy at 5 days old so I was surprised to see her looking jaundice again. Turns out she has breastmilk jaundice which is very rare but totally harmless. The nurse mentioned that if I switch to formula for a couple of days the yellow will go away rapidly whereas if I keep breastfeeding it can take weeks. I feel like if the jaundice is harmless and the ped wasn't concerned it's not worth the switch, but it felt like the nurse was sort of pushing it.

  • So I am solely breastfeeding and baby is 5 weeks. Yesterday I started noticing his poo has green in it when it was only yellow. Every time he eats I switch Breasts unless he only eats for a couple minutes, then I will put him on the same breast. I've  been doing this since he was born. Anyone else seeing the same poo change?
  • myla14myla14 member
@Cwyatt2571 We get a greenish diaper occasionally, not sure if it's from a fore/hind milk imbalance or something I eat. My bf routine is the same as yours. I've never had more than a couple in a row, tho, so I haven't worried about it.
  • @Cwyatt2571 I saw a green diaper a couple of day ago. I was initially worried but it was just a one off. Like @myla14 said, once in a while is no need for alarm.

Sounds like a foremilk /hindmilk imbalance

Is he gassy? I wouldn't worry about it unless it was also accompanied by fussiness and extra gas. We've had a few here and there. I also think your supply isn't really well established til some time between 4-6 weeks so it might be related to that!
