@mhilpisch10 FFFC means Flame-Free Friday Confessional.  Not always guaranteed flame-free, though this week seems pretty tame!

Throwing back to the name discussion a page or two ago, I agree that odd, overly unique, or made-up names are my pet peeve.  As a high school teacher, I have run across all kinds of names (Jazman/Jasmine/Jazmin, Jessyca/Jessika/Jessicah, all variations of Aiden/Braden/Caden), and I know it's the parents' prerogative and I'd never tell them or a student this, but I judge you!  I know that naming a child is a hugely personal process, but try to think about the impression it will make in a professional setting or on a resume.
I work in an emergency department and have to try to pronounce a myriad of names. I have a hard enough time with names from different cultures, but the traditional names with non-traditional spellings are killing me. I actually came across a "Boi".

  • Another FFFC (I was reminded about this from the baby names post).

I'm kind of bummed about having a September baby. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm really excited to even be having a baby and feel incredibly blessed to have a healthy pregnancy (so far *knocks on wood*). But I'd much rather have a spring or summer baby due to the school schedule. Our school year cuts off on Sept 1, so any child after that will have to wait until the following year to enroll in Kindergarten. I've heard that slightly younger kids do better in school because they are able to learn from the older kids and tend to be more appropriately "challenged" than those that are older. (it was an article about a study, not the study itself, and I can try to find it). I was a younger kid (born at the end of June) and really liked being on the younger side of things. It somehow felt advantageous. And while the age thing is a bit of a bummer, I'm really bummed out about the fact that it'll mean I have to pay for a full extra year of daycare that I wouldn't have had to pay for if baby would be born in August.

ETA: Here is one of the articles I read https://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/youngest-kid-smartest-kid
I am also worried about this and plan on trying to find some loopholes if this LO seems academically ready. I'll be reading this article.
One loophole I know of around here is finding a Kindergarden (likely private) that has a different deadline than your public school and then switching back to public school for 1st.  I will likely have options because the elementary school we will send our kids to is a Catholic school and the cut off is Sept 30th.  Our public school district has a cutoff of Aug 31st. I plan to keep our kids in Catholic school so I wouldn't actually be using it as a loophole, but I have heard of people sending their September kids to K at catholic school and then to 1st the next year in public school.  Though around here it's way more common to red shirt than to push ahead.  My daughter will be 5 in June and she will be one of the youngest in Kindergarten next year because two of her June and July friends will both with held back.

    Thanks, that's good to know!

  • @SuperFudge00 when I was doing my internship in the hospital I came across a girl who's name was 'La-a' the mom was so upset that I didn't know how to pronounce it...Ladasha
  • @618mom22boys Not sure if it's the same in your state, but in California, the mom's maiden name is on the BC, not the married name :(

@diagonalley This is not true in California (cutoff dates do not apply in 1st grade)...however it could be possible to test your child into 1st grade...

@PoodleDoodleOoo For what it's worth, I am a teacher and we get some choice for our baby's birthday due to RCS, and I'm opting for after the cutoff so he/she starts at almost 6....based on my experiences over the years...

  • Wait what? Cory and Topanga are back!? How did I not know this!!?
  • @blondie080300 I have fair skin too- blonde hair (at least the last time I checked before the variety of colors I've tried in the last few years lol), and blue eyes too. I'm definitely looking into it now, if even only for bikini waxing because summer is always TORTUROUS! Thanks for the info :)
