Just to clarify, when someone uses the phrase "xx is the new black", that's a fashion implication right? Like its the new in and acceptable thing-kind of like the go to black dress. @Winnie81 usually yes (regarding fashion), but some people will say things like this thinking they are being funny or cheeky or something. I work with a chick who does this same kind of thing.
