  • This time of year, I really hate my salaried position. I'm looking at 4 weeks in a row of 12+ hour Saturdays. Which pushes me well over 40 hours....If one more person says "think about how much money you're making", I may punch them.

After looking into all the research and facts I think cloth diapering is dumb.  It isn't any better for the environment.  And while it is less expensive, I like to think my time and energy isn't worthless and it just isn't worth attaching a poop sprayer to my toilet, spending hours washing, re washing, air drying a bunch of diapers.

Nope.  I plan on using disposables.  Thanks.
The good part about cloth diapering is that if done properly the child will be potty trained by 12-15 months Vs. 3 years. Everyone in my family was cloth diapered, I was potty trained by 9 months *swells with pride*...lol
Which means the studies of environmental impact will be skewed. Cloth diapers are also reused for multiple children within the household and beyond and I don't know if that is taken into consideration when they talk about the environmental impacts of growing cotton and the manufacturing process.

The environmental impact of cloth vs. disposable is still debatable, IMO. It does seem like there are better disposable diaper options available and even the main stream brands are working to reduce their impact as of late, and I think that is in direct response to the fact that more and more people are favoring cloth. Even just the fact that people are doing research before choosing one way or the other IMO is progress in the right direction and again attributable to the growing popularity of cloth diapering. So I guess to me that all adds up to cloth diapering not being dumb.
  • @antoto There is a decent market for used cloth diapers or you could always pass them onto friends/family. I do commend you for doing research and making an informed decision.

As for the other UOs, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the "good" UOs today. I don't think I have the time or energy to write out proper rebuttals for so many in one day. I do have work to do, you guys!

I have four friends that cloth diaper and all of their kids are over the age of 2 and not potty trained yet.  I only have one friend who has a kid under two that is potty trained and he's in disposables.
She did say "if done properly." Maybe your friends aren't doing it properly..

I want to cloth diaper for a lot of reasons (I don't try to push it on other people, though), but I already have reusable pads, use reusable washcloths instead of paper towels for most things, and plan to also start using reusable toilet paper as well (this only gets used for #1, not #2 btw).

But I also love doing laundry... Maybe that's my UO for today lol

Teachers and aids shouldn't have to call parents a certain number of times each grading section.
It takes away from valuable class or prep time. Some parents need to just quit being lazy, and take care of their kids and check their grades.

I know that all of my students' parents have access to internet, as the library is open 6am-9pm weekdays with free wifi and computers/tablets.
Wait, you have to CALL parents now, unprompted, to explain to them how their child is doing in school?  Isn't that what report cards and/or parent-teacher conferences are for?  That's ridiculous.
Can we parents opt out of this to make teacher's lives easier? Or does that make it worse for them?

THAT may be the most controversial one today, to me at least!
Yeah, I know, I'm weird lol. There's just something about a big warm pile of clean clothes :)
  • @simcal18  Yeah, I know women are judged no matter what, but 60 years ago women would have been judged for working and now women are judged for working and women are judged for not working. So while women's equality has definitely improved, we have also added an issue. And I'm not saying we should go back to the 1950s, but we should definitely work on both of these issues and many people only look at the issues for women who are working.
  • @britters314 , it's diapering, not rocket science.  Im sure they figured it out.

I never assume people can figure anything out lol. You never know...

Also the issue could have been the type of diapers they used. Some cloth diapers use stay-dry materials (like disposables) and the main reason cloth diapering leads to early potty training is because kids learn they don't like to sit in a wet diaper. So if the diapers have the stay-dry materials that wouldn't lead to earlier potty training.

Even the folding and putting away part?  That's where you usually lose me.

I really like grocery shopping...and I don't mind cleaning the bathroom because it's such a fast room to clean... Maybe that's my UO today.
  • @LoveIsOwlYouNeed  That's the best part! That's when the clothes are clean and warm!

I have to disagree with you on the bathroom, though. But that might be because I was a janitor for 8 years... Also we got a roommate this past year and he seems to have really terrible aim (it wasn't like this when it was just my husband and me)  :s
  • @antoto   I was just using the PP's wording - I know what feminism is. And I know not all feminists look down on SAHMs, but I have personally been looked down on by other women because I want to be a SAHM and not keep working. So.. that's my experience.

Yeah...that would definitely do it!  Eeeek!

I have been given a hard time about even considering being a SAHM.  And it's not always by women.  I don't know that it has anything to do with feminism but more people just being assholes to people who have different priorities.  I work in a technical field and worked hard to get an advanved degree but god forbid I even consider choosing to stay home a raise a child.  I was told it would be a waste of an education.  At that point I walked away before I angry cried.

I haven't even made up my mind yet (plus I have to actually get KU first so there is that lol).  There is a part of me that says "hey, I am a reasonably intelligent person.... If I give up my career to raise children into (hopefully) intelligent adults, then what the heck is wrong with that? How could that be considered a waste?"

And you know this...how?  I mean seriously...unless you have studies or something to back this up, it sounds like you're going off a limited number of anecdotes as opposed to  actual data.

@slass42, I don't think you understand what feminism is.  Because it part it is absolutely that if you, sLass want to stay home, make home-cooked meals and not drive, you, sLass can do that but I, Owl, can work and use daycare. And for the record, a lot of working moms don't do take out on the regular. Feminism just means that you don't believe men are inherently worth more than women and deserve the same rights and opportunities, if they want to pursue them. It doesn't mean you don't acknowledge actual differences between the sexes, just that those differences don't make one sex superior to the other.

Also, BTW, most 50s housewives drove...

*quote box fail* Uh, I don't think you need "studies to back it up" when everyone you know was cloth diapered and potty trained by the same time you were. I was raised in Russia and we didnt get diapers imported until mid 90's.....so I guess if you call the population of Russia a "limited number" then my argument is invalid. American's are so obsessed with "data" that they will ignore any real life examples or lessons because it's not published in a nationally publicized magazine or website.

And I encouraged by SIL to cloth diaper and her youngest whines/fusses when she has to go potty about 60% of the time.....she's 7 months old...

Not saying cloth diapering is for everyone but there's definitely big perks.
