Does anyone have any experience with Enfamil Supplement formula (green container) I want a formula for the "just in case" but I want one that will compliment breast milk. Does it even matter?!
I use it with my LO. I got an Enfamil formula sample pack in the mail and there were 4 samples of this, so I thought I'd give it a try. I give him 3 bottles of formula a day, and the rest is pumped breast milk. He seems to be doing fine with it. I am only on day 3 with it so far.
How long would you give a baby to get used to formula? I had a sample can of similac sensitive that my DD did well with. Went to target today and was able to get the store brand for 1/2 the price of the Similac! She's spit up some tonight, think it's coincidence or the formula? I'd like to save $ but DD's health and happiness is top priority.

We were told with DS to try a new formula for 3 days to a week. That said there were some he showed an immediate reaction to that was bad enough that we decided against after just a couple feedings.
@littlebitmom I also tried to use a generic brand of formula for my lo. I gave it to him for about a week and he was super gassy and spit up more than usual. I switched back to the name brand kind and he is doing much much better. I believe the generic kinds are a bit harder for some babies to digest. I used the sam's club formula for my ds and he had no problem. I guess I'm not so lucky this time. I would give it a few more days and see how your lo does.

I would give it at least a week before switching to give her time to adjust. I thought at first my son wasn't tolerating his formula (he was acting very gassy and uncomfortable) but I decided to stick it out and really give it time. It took about 2 weeks to tell but he's adjusted to it and is doing fine. Not only that but I was afraid to switch for the fear a new formula potentially causing him worse problems so I that is also why I waited.
Hi Ladies, I did not read each post so I may be repeating. I gave up breastfeeding a few weeks in. In addition to latching issues my girl is a sleepy eater and so we were trying every hour. In the middle of the night I was holing in pain duet cracked nipple and we decided enough is enough. I had tried a lactation consultant. We have to do what we think is best for our family, and Mommy's sanity in important. It sucks to be tied to the pump. I take the Trader Joe's very green supplement and the milk tea and at 5 weeks have over 50 ounces in the freezer. I try to pump frequently but am home alone during the day so I go 3 or 4 hours between. This is a great resource -https://exclusivepumping.com
How do you know when it's time to go up a nipple size on the bottle?
I believe with my son we went up to a number 2 when he was about three months old. We could almost feel that he was getting frustrated at how little milk he was getting out. Also, if you switch too early they will spill formula out of their mouth while drinking. This happened to us when we thought that it was time to switch to number three. No biggie...we just switched back to the smaller size for the next couple of weeks and then went back. Sorry if this isn't too helpful, but just try to see when your baby seems to be wanting the formula quicker when feeding and don't worry if you switch and it was a mistake. It's easy to switch back.
My daughter stayed on #1 for a long time before moving up to #2. DS was bigger than she was at birth, but we had to get size #0 nipples because he was eating way too fast and gulping on #1s and losing it out the sides of his mouth, as @KRH6829 mentioned. Not sure how long it'll be for him until moving to a #1 nipple and eventually #2. You can tell when they need a larger one. They'll get frustrated.
I'm gradually giving DD a #1 nipple. The preemie nipple is awesome at night because it really wares her out. She's really at an awkward stage and needs a .5 nipple lol it would be nice if they existed.
It would be really nice if this was at the top like the breastfeeding post. I think more people might ask questions and offer help if it was easier to find.
We are using dr brown bottles and the premie size nipples. I actually tried the #1 size today and ds spilled formula all over. Looks like he wasn't ready so back to premies we go!

How old is DS? We are contemplating doing the same but DD spits up so much even with premie, I'd hate to change and have even more.
@kdoak2015 He is 6 weeks old and eats 5oz every 3-4 hrs which takes forever with the premie nipples! I thought he would be ready for the switch..guess not!
Anyone tried an AR formula yet? We got a tub of Enfamil AR to use for frequent spit ups, and some reviews say they had to go up a nipple size while others say they were fine staying the same. We are still emptying an Enfamil gentle tub, so haven't got to the AR yet.
We have used the enfamil AR and love it!!!. So we are still at a 0 nipple size and he is 4 weeks old. He hasn't had a problem/frustrated to get the milk out.
My LO is 4 1/2 weeks today...how much formula are you feeding your LO at this age? I am currently feeding him 3 oz but wondering if he needs more b/c he only sleeps 1.5 hours at a time.

If your LO is completely emptying his 3 oz bottles, go up to 3.5 oz. Then when he empties those, go up to 4 oz on each bottle. That is what I did with DS and I'm doing the same with DD. It works pretty well...she is 7 weeks and takes about 5oz per bottle.
DD turned one month yesterday and she is at 4 oz. She is a little porker and will be moving to 4.5 oz soon! We bought 4 oz bottles thinking that would be enough to last her a while....false. Lol

The 4 oz bottles are such a waste of money. We of course bought them when we had our son who is now 2 thinking that we would get a lot of use out of them...not. No one tells you that you will be onto the big bottles before they are even two months!!!

Yep. I hate how they sell you the variety pack like its a good thing....
My ds is 6 weeks and is now taking 5oz every 3.5-4 hours. He was only going 2 hours between feedings taking 4 oz so it was time for more!
Totally agree with the 4oz bottle situation..complete waste of money! I was surprised at how early my ds needed 5oz. DS number 1 didn't get up to 5oz a feeding until about 10 weeks old.
@Taylovesbrad DD is 8 weeks today and still only managing 3 oz per feeding at most. She goes maybe 2-3 4hr stretches overnight and the rest of the day mostly 2-3 hr stretches and occasionally only 1-1.5 hr. I'm not sure how many ounces she averages in a day since I've never tried to figure that out for her.
My LO has been at 3oz for a few days, but is emptying the bottle each time. I'm going to try for 3.5 and see how he does. He eats every 2 1/2-3 hours, sometimes 2 hours.
My LO is 7 weeks and has been taking 3 ounces per feeding for several weeks now. He finishes the entire bottle each time, and seems to want more, but the few times I offered more he spit up like crazy for the next several feedings so I thought his tummy was too small for more. It only takes him about 5 minutes to down the bottle because the nipple size is kind of big for him (Tommee Tippee size 1 - they don't make smaller). I think it just hasn't registered that he is full. I usually end up nursing him for a few minutes after the bottle so he gets to keep sucking until he feels full - I produce almost nothing so I don't think he even gets an ounce more when he nurses.
He eats every 2 hours during the day, and 4-5 hours at night. After hearing how much your babies eat now I am thinking I should try 4 ounces again to see how he does. He is gaining weight well. What do you think?
Right now I'm supplementing my BF with 1-2 bottles per day, and have only been doing 3oz at each bottle time. My LO is 5 weeks old, and BF's every 2-2.5 hours. I'm starting to wonder if he's not getting enough if he's eating this often still, and wondering if I should be giving him an ounce or two at a feeding time to see if that will make him last longer. Any thoughts?
@Holdmomma It's best to base the amount you're giving on the individual baby rather than age and what you think they should be drinking. Just like adults, they all have different appetites and the spitting up sounds like it could be overfeeding. If you increase, try just a half an ounce at a time.
I think you could be right on needing to suck. I have a fast letdown so when I bf DD doesn't eat for long before she's full and then takes a pacifier as she still wants to suck but get upset at that point if she's getting anything with it.
@esscapelle 2-2.5 hrs sounds completely normal to me at this age, especially with being mostly bf. Breastmilk digests faster than formula so babies tend to eat more frequently with it than formula. It will also vary a lot with things like growth spurts. If he's showing fullness questions after a feeding then he should be getting enough.
@esscapelle My baby is completely formula fed so this might not help you much. My lo was draining 4 oz bottles every 2.5 hours around the clock. I gave him 4.5 and he still was acting like he wasn't full so I have been giving him 5oz. Now he usually falls asleep after a feeding and will go every 4 hours. Every baby is different though!
This baby is definitely eating more sooner than DD did. She also would nurse on me, though, and we've almost completely given that up at this point with him. He's 1 month today. She would drink 2 oz and maybe 3/4oz for a while, and he surpassed that at around 2 weeks. He will sometimes eat 3 oz and sometimes 6oz these days. I keep the formula made up in a Dr. Brown's pitcher, so it's not difficult to refill the bottle when he needs more.
The pitcher is amazing. I have the Dr. Browns one because we use those bottles, so I don't know if other brands have the pitchers. The pitcher mixes the formula so well, and then you have mixed formula in the fridge ready to go. Also, I get way less bubbles in the formula when I use the pitcher. It was so worth the money...I think it was only a little over $10 if I remember correctly.
@KRH6829 I may have to pick one up soon. Leo has gas issues so less bubbles will be a big help. I already stir instead of shake when I make a bottle but I still end up with bubbles. We use Dr. Brown bottles too so I will probably end up getting the same for the pitcher, I was just curious for price in purposes.
