Baby Names

Where do you get your name inspiration?

I'm due in feb with baby #2 and I am just feeling so uninspired with names. We're team green. I have a son named Roman.

Where else should I look besides name berry and ss lists?

Also, I always said I would name a daughter Stella after my granny but it's become so popular I'm having second thoughts. Would you still use it?

Re: Where do you get your name inspiration?

  • It depends on how you feel about having a popular/trending name. Perhaps it would work well the middle name spot if you feel it is too popular?

I browse the name threads on this board and the month boards, I also use behind the name and nymbler

  • Perhaps Estelle?
  • I googled Catholic names.
  • I don't follow the popularity fad on names because just because it's popular now doesn't mean it always will. Also, that doesn't mean there will be 5 of your child's name in their class but it could happen.

I used nameberry for names I liked and then would look at variations or similar names because it wouod direct me to a new name. The name we picked I know someone with the name but I found it by looking at variations of a name we liked.

Nameberry, browsing boards here for what others have suggested or a baby book helped my DH and I.

  • Nameberry I what I used. Sorry not very helpful :( I ended up using a name I heard on HGTV several years prior and fell in love with.
I would use Stella in a heartbeat! Especially with family meaning. It was on my top 5 list!!

  • I tend to gravitate toward the top 100. Why because the names higher up are usually too different for me.

  • We named DS after men who inspired DH. I like names that tie back into other people- favorite authors, beloved relatives, etc.

Stella is beautiful, and it's extra sweet because of your granny. Go for it or like PP said, Estelle- either way, adorable.
  • Honestly, I used the ssa.gov top names. DH and I decided 'No top 20 names are an option'. Then I went through and crossed off names we didn't like. Then highlighted names we didn't know a single soul with! We wanted something recognizable but not heavily used. We came up with Carter, number 27 on the ssa.gov list for 2014. We will most likely do the same thing for baby number 2! Good luck!!!
  • My girl name came from a song I heard in high school. I fell in love with it. And it's been #1 on my list since. The name itself isn't popular but the style of the name is...boo. We look at movies, tv, books, music etc for names we like. Then I look up the meaning to see if I like it.
  • I always try to honor things that were important to us, whether they were people we knew, literary references, etc.

My 1st daughter is named after my Grandmother and a Jimmy Eat World Song.
My 2nd daughter was simply a 1st name I liked and her middle name is after Anne of Green Gables, my favorite book
Daughter #3 is simply a name we didn't both hate, lol. And Frances, because it's a reference to a lot of important people: Saint Francis, Pope Francis, etc. And I just really like the name.

  • My hubby is 95% inspired by music and 5% literature. Our son's first name is an Elvis Costello song and practically all of our baby girl names for our March arrival are derived from songs.
I'm a big history geek so the names on my list tend to be influential people - son's name wa a happy consisdence that my husband mentioned it first. His middle name is Lyon - which most would side-eye in this forum but he's named after 2 Canada-famous Lyon's William Lyon MacKenzie and William Lyon MacKenzie King (longest serving prime minister).

Hilariously enough this time around we're pretty certain that our girl's MN will be Victoria inspired by one of my hubby's favourite Kinks song and Queen Victoria - the subject of the song hahaha

But if people saw our kid names Oliver and Charlotte (not 100% settled on girl name) they'd think we just picked popular ones.
  • I would... It's not your fault that you have the same good taste as a lot of people....and with the history of the name it's really perfect.
  • Our oldest is Stella hope-Marie. She's 19 and we don't know any other Stellas besides her great granny. I personally love it but I'm partial.
  • Love Stella!!.... Did a lot of searching online... But my sister was talking about a friend who had a new boyfriend named Cyrus... I misheard her, and am glad I did... Silas got added to the list. I was so heart broken when JT named his boy Silas a few months before ours arrived. I was worried about popularity but went with it anyway... So far have yet to meet another. Fingers crossed.
  • I love name matchmaker.
  • I'm sitting here going "Wow these are some great places to get names! I'm going to pull out the family Bible to find some inspiration!" Some people have good luck there. Me, I have an Izona, Lundie Inez, Lavader Pearl, Dunbar, and Ulysses (pronounced YOU-liss-es...). Back to the drawing board for me...whomp whomp.
  • I like to read.. So i get a lot of names from books. I'm also a big movie and tv buff and have found a lot of cool names in both cast and characters. Our daughter was named after my great grandmother so I suppose i had some luck trawling the family tree.
