  • For people struggling with weight gain during pregnancy, try cutting out processed carbs.  After gaining weight fast with my first, even while eating healthy, I ended up having gestational diabetes (I am in normal range at 5'5 125 pre pregnancy)  I saw a dietitian and was put on a pretty strict diet and by limiting my carb intake and switching to ALL 100% whole wheat everything, my weight gain started to slow and become normal.  I didnt get GD with my second and Im not sure if I have it this pregnancy, but since I started gaining pretty fast this time around I just decided to put myself on the GD diet of limiting my carbs and when I do eat them, to make sure its the good ones with lots of fiber, and now Ive completely slowed my weight gain again (im at 11 pounds at 22 weeks). Its a really healthy way to go, especially in pregnancy when you need to give your baby the best start anyway.  

    I have lots of info about it if anyone is more interested, but I thought Id just put that out there.  Normally I have no problem as my metabolism is pretty fast, but pregnancy my body does not use insulin properly and Ive learned how to deal with it.  Apparently even if you dont fall under having GD, insulin levels can be out of whack during pregnancy in general so cutting out processed carbs can help a lot.

  • Now, I know everyone gains differently, and some may add a lot in the beginning and slow down later and vice versa. This calculator has helped remind me that the weight I'm gaining is on track: https://www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html According to this, I still have another 10-20 pounds before week 40 and it's still considered "healthy". It allows me to remind myself I am on track and prepares me for the numbers I may see on the scale at the OB. I didn't gain as much in the beginning and made up for it the past couple of weeks which made me uneasy.
  • @dolewhipper thank you so much for sharing this link. I DEFINITELY should not have had that cake yesterday! Eeek! It was so good to see where I'm at and where I need to be. It's good motivation for me.
