I just minimize any fish that has Mercury in it and avoid exposure to chemicals.... Everything else is the same common sense I would live by pregnant or not. (I really don't drink anyway so there's not much change, tho if I did I would probably minimize or avoid)
Picking up my toddler and wearing my toddler in the Ergo backpack. I can't imagine not carrying my toddler because these days are really really numbered now, I totally get that. Little one is a very busy toddler so when given an opportunity to carry I will take it.
Last pregnancy I didn't drink a drop of caffeine. This pregnancy I am allowing myself some here and there but do keep the 2 cup rule in mind (according to my doctors).
I had a really wild weekend. I ate a salmon roll and had some feta in a salad at a bridal shower. And eggs Benedict with perfectly poached eggs. And burrata.
Nitrates and nitrites used in processed meats aren't good for baby and isn't recommended.
But caffeine is ok in small quantities but has no benefits to the baby so I stopped drinking as often
@evamarta I had some sushi a few weeks back, just completely cooked and asked if they would prepare it away from the raw stuff to avoid cross contamination. It was delicious!
Ah okay. I forgot about nitrates. I had some bacon the other day and now I want all the bacon, but we never buy it so no temptation there haha. I don't drink caffeine soda ever...I cut it out when I was nursing and then never picked it up again. I figure a little bit of coffee in the morning is definitely under 200 mg and gives me a boost to chase DD around!
I rode horses all through my last pregnancy. A lot of doctors say no, but you have to trust you and your horse. I grew up with horses and have been riding since I was 4....are horses are used for lessons for 2 & 3 year olds. I knew I was safe. Do what you feel comfortable....just remember they are animals and have that fight or flight response.
I work in EMS so unless fire is on scene with us, its just me and my partner lifting patients, and I will have a Dr. Pepper when I go out to eat (isn't very often).
I have to clean the litter box because my husband and I currently live apart due to our jobs--but I do wear gloves and she's been an indoor kitty her whole life.
I'm still taking hot showers because I feel COLD all day... and then when I go to bed I get night sweats!
I have been dying for a cold turkey sandwich with sweet pickle but I just haven't convinced myself it's worth the risk. I know I could heat it up to be safer, but warm food is really off-putting to me these days.
Caffeine. I switched to decaf coffee and drink about a quarter of what I used to, but it's still about twice what they recommend.
But the real reason I wanted to post is the thing I know I am not supposed to do but I really want to do but can't: I have prenatal vitamins in gummy form, and they are freaking delicious and I can't stop thinking about eating them. I have not yet taken more than my allotted dosage, but they are sitting there on the kitchen counter calling to me....
I pick up my 3 year old still and drink diet coke.
This. My 3 year old weighs 45 lbs and I drink 2 diet cokes a day. (I also eat deli meat, hot dogs, tuna, bacon, soft cheese, use face wash, and will drink an occasional glass of wine after first tri, but I don't worry about those like I do the Diet Coke).
My NP told me that I can eat soft cheese because unless it's from a specialty shop its most likely pasturized. I just cheated and had a half of a half of corned beef sandwich at my work lunch. It was delicious but now I feel guilty!
I actually eat what I want in moderation. Beverages, however, are a different story! I cut back on Monster 0 which was a daily thing for me and prob not so healthy anyway. Now I have one maybe once a week. I figure it's better than the relaxing glass of Glenlivet 12 I sometimes crave :-)
I think when you are on baby #2+ it is just about surviving. I was so careful about every choice last time. I have had a few club sandwiches, bacon, pepperoni, caffeinated soda, lattes and queso. The fact that I can eat is something to celebrate because I was so sick last time.
I've had Sushi (sashimi), cold cuts and runny eggs. I even considered eating unpastiruzed cheese yesterday. My body has been so picky about what it will let me that I can't afford to not eat what I can keep down.
I still drink coffee In the mornings but I brew it a lot less strong than I used to! And I add a lot more milk to it to reduce the caffeine effect!! Gotta have my coffee.
I was training for a 10 K, which wasn't exactly off limits, but it is now since I apparently pushed it a little too hard during my 6 mile jog last night and had some light bleeding as a result.
I have a cat and play with her like crazy. According to our background (Russian), we aren't allowed to have animals in the house during pregnancy and aren't allowed to look them in the eyes or put them on our stomach. This may sound weird to people but it's a cultural belief- whether real or not.
I kept my cat and am always with her but I have the worry in the back of my mind about this superstition.
I'm dreading having more people find out that I am pregnant because I don't want anyone's opinions on whether I eat sashimi or continue to go to crossfit and lift weights. My body, my baby, my decision. I didn't make any of those decisions lightly. I don't eat sashimi because I love it and selfishly can't stop. I don't even like sashimi and eat it solely for its nutritional benefits. Personally, I think a lot of the guidelines for pregnant women are utter crap. The weight lifting 'restriction' isn't even one any doctor in my area still recommends. Do I judge anyone for choosing to follow them? No, unless we're chain smoking alcoholics who also starve ourselves, I think all of our babies will probably turn out fine. It's none of my business what someone else is doing.
@seasalt123 I agree. My OB is super cool and has said that, with a few exceptions, the only things pregnant women should really avoid is anything that would give anyone food poisoning. So, since I am not a fan of having food poisoning anyways, it really doesn't change too much for me. I don't get gas station sushi, I'm not a huge cold-cut fan unless it is an occasional Italian sub from my favorite roast beef joint (which is super clean), I usually order my steaks medium or medium-well etc. Some things like high mercury content fish (no swordfish, tuna steak), alcohol and caffeine are more restricted for pregnant women, but in general it hasn't changed my eating habits too much, except I am eating much healthier than before (this LO is a health nut and craves the most ridiculously healthy things...I'm just going with it!)
As for the physical activity, it really depends on what shape you were in pre-pregnancy. If I started cross-fit now, things would not go well because I am horrifically out of shape. Pregnancy does decrease your endurance and as the bump expands can weaken your abs, but if you are using proper body mechanics and taking breaks as needed (which may be a little more often than pre-pregnancy) you should be fine. And it really is your body, your decision. As long as you are being honest with your doctor and doing what you think is best, no one really has the right to judge.

Kinda on the same wavelength, but I kiss my cats paws when we cuddle. I know, she is digging in litter which can be harmful, but I don't care! DH does the litter so at least I am somewhat careful.

Confession time: I haven't scooped my cat's litter box since the BFP because MH is terrified of toxoplasmosis. Of course, she is an indoor cat and has never once caught a mouse/bird so there is literally zero chance she could have it. Oh, well. I would hate to stress out MH by scooping perfectly safe litter ;-)

Wait, what? Where in the heck did it say we couldn't have bacon!? Or face wash? Regardless, I'm still eating it and washing my face. You know, because of society.

I think the bacon thing is about nitrates that tend to be used for curing bacon, hams and I think corned beef? I've heard some soaps, make-ups and face washes can be harm full as well from people but not read it anywhere official so not sure on that one. I already buy Nitrate free bacon and use Lush natural products so I haven't paid too much attention to the details of 'why' for these.
Oh, all the things. Our culture is wayyyy too strict on pregnant women. I eat whatever I feel like, lunch meat and sushi too, and have a small glass of wine most days. My sense of smell is like a superpower now, and I won't go near anything to eat that's not super fresh. Before I was pregnant if something was questionable I'd just heat it up extra or whatever, now no way, I'll barely touch leftovers the next day.
I hadn't even heard the "no lifting things over 25 lbs thing" I am quite active and asked my doc if I needed to restrict myself in any way. Her response was to do what I was comfortable with and beginning around 20 weeks be careful not to lay flat on my back for any extended time. We're in the process of moving, so... I know I'll be lifting over 25 lbs plenty more in the coming days.
@laurenmdrn16 exactly! I've been going to crossfit for 5 years on and off. I'm by no means a great athlete (I only go 2 - 3 times a week and don't push myself hard) but I'm very comfortable with all the movements and have excellent stamina. It seems absurd to me that anyone would be told to not lift weights when real life women have toddlers to pick up and carry. I definitely would NOT recommend anyone who is new to the sport to take it up while pregnant. I also hear you on 'no food poisoning please'. I'm not a fan of sketchy sushi ever, so I'm not about to start now. :-)
The real question is what haven't I eaten that I am not supposed to? I've had sushi, a tuna fish sub, coffee, Italian meats, poached eggs every weekend, bacon (I just learned that's another thing to watch out for from these posts) soft cheese, sips of champagne...I have not been good. I also drank a whole lot of yellow Gatorade (yes I know coconut water has less sugar) so I'm pretty much going to get gestational diabetes and give birth to a lime green child.
I've had food poisoning one time in my life and it was from a salad bar. F*** salad.
Also, does anyone actually know anyone who has ever gotten salmonella from eating cookie dough? Are these lies we are told to suppress our happiness?
@zasinger I keep wanting to make cookies and then remember that stupid rule, and being like, "what's even the point if I can't eat all the dough?" And no, never heard of anyone ever getting salmonella. Which is also good because my friend with the gourmet-chef mom finally moved back to town, and said mom cooked me the most AMAZING poached eggs this morning.
I scoop the litter box (and the tortoise habitat too), I've licked the brownie batter spoon, I've eaten a bit of raw cookie dough, runny eggs (MMM!) and *gasp* just this morning I had a glass of ice cold raw milk. frankly I'm more worried about getting listeria from grocery store products that are supposed to be safe than from my local dairy farmer where I get milk, eggs, meats, cheese, yogurt.
I did switch to decaf coffee though, so I am TRYING.

Wait. Is this a thing now? I survived on lemon-lime Gatorade first trimester. I swear so much has changed since I was pg with my DD four years ago. All the decongestants that were approved then? No long approved. I guess it's a miracle my DD only has 10 fingers....

@countrygrl5533 I don't think there is an approval issue sorry to cause alarm, I just had a ton of people casually say to me "did you know you could get electrolytes from coconut water and it has less sugar?" which was super annoying because all I wanted was Gatorade.

Not alarmed. Just more like "seriously? That is a thing now?!?"
I hate anything coconut so that wouldn't have worked for me.
