  • Anyone have issues with spotting after BMs??? 21 weeks and 2 days now... I am not constipated, not straining, just allowing my body to push out the BM like normal.... But once a week or so, I get spotting afterward... Doctor is not concerned at all, checked for infection in week 12 and found no infection... It's stressful because I'm a FTM and I have anxiety.
  • @tJaffe I've had a little bit of experience with this and my doctor and nurse said it's pretty normal. The nurse just told me that if the bleeding becomes heavier than spotting to give them a call. Hope that helps and try not to worry! :)

  • We are all on DH's insurance. It is either him alone or "family". The family rate doesn't matter if we have one kid or six. We have a family deductible of $2400 then a family max out of pocket of $4000. So it doesn't matter how we hit those deductibles, we are all on the same one and the baby will be too.
  • This isn't a medical question, but DH and I were married catholic, which means we will be raising our children catholic.  Anyway, does anyone know if the Godparents need to be Catholic?  I read somewhere that one does have to but I'm not sure how true that is.  Just was wondering if anyone happened to know.

  • @bntfroggie when my nephew was baptized about 10 years ago, the godmother was Catholic (me) and the godfather was not.
  • Thank you both :-)  I guess I'm just under the impression that if someone is a christian it should be fine, but not sure how the Catholic church views that.

  • We didn't baby proof till the kiddo was much closer to a 1 than birth. In reality, there wasn't much he could have gotten into until then. Not crazy at all. And even after that it was minimal.

It honestly depends on the church you go to. Some are VERY strict about the process and I've heard them go as far as expecting the godparents to both be Catholic, married, and have documented proof of their completion of all sacraments.

  • Does anyone know where I can get maternity sweatpants? Its starting to get chilly here and they would be great for walking the dogs and doing outdoor stuff/chores.....all I can seem to find are heavyweight leggings...

If you have a Ross you could try there. I've seen sweat pants in the maternity section but it's such a hit or miss store. I make no promises.
  • Not sweatpants, but I bought thicker lounge pants from Target - they're half panel and they definitely keep me warm.  You could also just do men's sweat pants

@bntfroggie I realize I am a little late to this party, but I second what @soxfan9968 said. One of my best gal pals was almost not allowed to be the godmother to her niece because (while she was catholic) she was not actually going to church. In the end her entire family said they stop going to this church (they had been members for like 3 generations) and the church caved, but obviously that's a one off situation. I know that in a lot of cases, one godparent can be of another (presumably christian) religion as long is one is a practicing catholic, but it definitely varies by church.

  • Okay I have a dumbbbb questions about labor.

So I always thought you're like oh shit I'm in labor and you go and have your baby. I've been seeing posts and comments of people saying labor is once you're dilated? Does that mean you can spend weeks in labor? Does being dilated mean you're having contractions or does that just mean you're body is getting ready to go? I'm so confused
  • You can spend weeks in labor. ACTIVE labor is when you've been admitted into the hospital. Yay the fun we're all about to have! Lol

And ACTIVE starts around 4cm.  Yup I was at 2-3cm for weeks with fun symptoms leading up to my water breaking.

  • @SarahFoley725 here's a good, informational link on the stages of labor. It should help clear things up for you. Labor is so much more than just pushing baby out, so confusing!

  • @JessKo08 lol that was only really babies 2-4 because the 5th I didn't even know I was in labor. The first was for sure a completely different story! Lol

  • Let's see my stages are (although water breaking was different between the two boys)

    - DS1 - water breaks, ctx start 5 minutes apart.  Don't wake husband because they're still 5 minutes apart.  Breathing through a little, take a shower because I know it's going to be a long day.  (DS2 water broke after we got to hospital).
    - Hey these things are getting a little more painful, call midwife, still 4-5 minutes apart but they tell me to come in because of water breakage.  Shove bags in car - FTM think we're in a hurry (ha!) so we majorly rush).  Breathing through ctx.
    - Get to hospital and walk around L&D, up and down stairs, try to get these things going, get checked.  At a 4.  Walk around a lot more for an hour, up and down stairs, get checked again, still a 4.  Try to take a nap.  I'm stalled for a few hours.
    - Things really heat up and holy crap are they painful - ACTIVE labor.  Labor in bath, on toilet, on ball, repeat all of those.
    - Finally after a loooooooooong day (like my labor was 17 1/2 hours with DS1), I'm finally at push stage - and you cannot control the urge to push!!!
    - HELLO BABY!!!!  I'm in love!!!

  • Apparently my circulation is getting worse because when I sleep it has to be on my left side. To get a change in position I'll roll to my right but that leaves me breathless pretty quickly so I stay pretty stuck to the left side. This is really starting to take a toll on my left hip and leaves it pretty sore some days. Would a body or pregnancy pillow help with my hip?

  • I used to worry about not knowing if I was in labor and randomly spitting my baby out, but after all of the weird shit that has happened to me with this kid makes me think I'll be like 36 weeks and my body will start the process just to be difficult

How do you have 5 kids already and NOT have a body/pregnancy pillow?!?  Yes it would help!!!!  Woman, get on that crap!!!  Get thee to a swimming pool too!

Lol! Up until now when I got really uncomfortable I could just grab an extra pillow and sleep with it between my legs and be fine. I guess this little boy knows he's the last and has decided to throw my through the ringer! ;)

  • I actually just started getting uncomfortable with my pregnancy pillow and switched back to my regular ones...what is life
  • I think this varies based on situation, and your situation might reflect someone who goes into labor naturally. I had to be induced at 41 weeks and started getting pitocin while dialated to a 1. I was already on oxygen and had full pain contrctions just like those I had while pushing at 3cm. But I was induced and it was just plain ugly. I had epidural at 3cm, and then pitocin and epidural were turned off by 4cm because the pitocin was too much for baby to tolerate - her heart rate was dropping to basically nothing, I was getting injections to help her, etc. (clearly they just thought I was a wimp in my responses and couldn't handle any contractions, it wasnt until baby couldn't tolerate it that they turned it down/off). Needless to say by 5cm my epidural was basically worn off, I could have walked around, but pains were similar to the original pains, I think because pitocin was turned off. My sister in the other hand was dialated to a 2 for 2 weeks and never made it past that without help. Got a small dose of pitocin and pushed 3 times and had a baby all in a few hours. She however, has pushed through a whopping 12 contractions, and has 4 kids. Jealous! She saw me in labor, after my epidural was turned off, and thought I was going to die.
  • So I know the alcohol content of breast milk goes with blood... so if you are sober enough to drive you can BF etc... and pumping it out doesn't make a difference

So I pump at 9pm, go out ans have a few with the ladies, sleep... would I be good to go in the morning? (Pump or BF)

I'm no expert but from what I read it doesn't get into your breast milk in as high of a content as it does blood, but that the hour/per drink for it to get out of your system is a good rule of thumb. I think you'd definitely be fine going back to it in the morning.

Should be. My rule of thumb is if you can feel it and you shouldnt be driving, you shouldn't nurse. Just drink a ton of water while you're drinking alcohol.

  • So I have a feeling this is a stupid question, but this is a "safe" environment in which those can be asked - right?!?!

The women in my family have a history of going over their due dates, so I have been paying special attention to those mentioning going over, inductions, etc. on this board. I would LIKE to avoid being induced, but obviously if it's medically necessary I'd agree.

My question is when it comes to being induced, what is the difference between being medically induced and the things that you can do at home? i.e. walking, sex, spicy foods, etc.

I understand that one is medical and the others are "natural", but if you're (for lack of better words) forcing labor to start either way, are you going to have a similar outcome with both forms of inducement? i.e. statistically longer, more painful labors, more likely more medical interventions, etc.

The plan is to try and do this thing med-free so I just want to make sure I am not setting myself up for (again, lack of better term) failure if I try to "cheat" a little to get the baby out of me!

  • Not a stupid question at all.  And there is no proof that the home methods work at all, but it kind of makes you feel better knowing that you are "helping" your body get into gear - if nothing else, the last few weeks are a major mind f***, so if it helps keep your mind at ease, then by all means do them (as long as you're not harming yourself).  In the end, I just ended up getting frustrated and exhausted.  If your body isn't ready to go into labor, it's not going to, as much as you try to help it along.

As far as my BTDT advice:
-Spicy - might just give you heartburn, but do it if you're desperate.  Wings didn't help me at all :)
-Eggplant parmesan - Just delicious, basil didn't do jack crack for me.
-Pineapple - delicious smoothies, again didn't do jack crack.
-Sex - just ended up getting frustrated because of being at beached whale status and nothing seemed to be working.
-Red raspberry leaf tea - just made me pee a lot, and I got sick of it.
-Bouncing on ball - felt good to be active, don't think it did anything except shake baby's brains ;)
-Walking - are you kidding me???  See beached whale status above!
-Evening primrose oil - yeah just gross, but I was desperate.
-Nipple stimulation - worked more when I was actually IN labor and it did bring on ctx.

But I did have my membranes stripped with DS2.  Twice (first didn't work, second did - next day went into labor but stalled and had to have a TON of pitocin which wasn't fun).

Your best bet for not getting induced is to just be patient, which is so hard at the end.  You end up being desperate.  The best thing to do is try to keep yourself busy.  And since every pregnancy is different, you never know, you could end up going before your due date without even doing anything.

  • Yep, a lot of the natural induction methods don't really work, especially if your body is not ready. Some of them (pineapple, sex/semen) supposedly ripen your cervix, but that's not going to put you into labor. Oxytocin part of what puts you into labor, and nipple stimulation and orgasms release oxytocin, so theoretically that could work. But again, your body has to be ready for that to work, same with stripping your membranes. But I agree, everyone is so desperate at the end that it just feels like, well, it couldn't hurt...

My mom was two weeks late with me and she and my aunt had seven c sections between them, so I was worried that would be me too! But both of mine were born a couple of days before their due dates with textbook labors that only took 5.5 hours.

So it's good to prepare, but remember you never know what will happen!

  • @flowerpower5838 The big thing to remember is the 'at home remedies' that people tout as labor inducers are all completely anecdotal.  I had sex three days before I went into labor.  I also got my hair done the day before I went into labor.  Does that mean I shouldn't get my hair done between week 36-40 for fear of inducing early labor?  Nope.  Does it make someone who is incredibly uncomfortable feel an air of even slight potential control over their situation and pain?  Sure.  Placebo effect?  IDK.

On the other hand, medical induction will most definitely get it started and result in a baby.

Now, that said, there are 'natural inducers' like such and such teas (raspberry leaf tea I think) plus a few other herbal things.  The big thing to remember with herbs is that even though they are 'natural', herbs you get at the store are in higher than natural doses.  Take the recent case of the basketball player who went into a coma thanks in part to natural male enhancers... and be cautious.
