Baby wraps

Re: Baby wraps

  • I will say I tried a stretchy boba wrap after using a non stretchy wrap for a while and it didn't feel secure at all to me. I'd have a hand up too. Total secureness even on brisk walks with the breeze. I've just been doing the front wrap cross carry so far. Going to try to catch a meeting on Wednesday. The groups 45 minutes away though :(

  • I have a wrap, ergo and a BabyHawk Mei Tei. So far, he likes the ergo the best. We skipped the infant insert and used a rolled up receiving blanket. The insert is quite bulky and hot for summer months.

@rweaver8611 Your LO is so adorable! I love his hair!

It literally dries straight up in the air! Cracks me up...we can't go out anywhere without someone mentioning it.
  • @HMack4742 how and where do you put the blanket
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • @HMack4742 how and where do you put the blanket

So, I strap my Ergo on. I fold up the receiving blanket and put it on the bottom. Right now, he's in froggy style position so it helps to make sure that he's putting his weight on his bum and not his feet while raising him a bit. My guy is pretty long though and I think I am actually going to have to move to a Boba for a higher back. :/
  • Anyone try the K'tan Breeze? I've been looking at that one online wondering if it would be comfortable in this Texas heat.
  • @SarahBaby87 I have the breeze...LO loves it, but I only use it indoors. It's not breathable at all and too hot for outside (I'm in Texas and it's over 100 every day this week...).
  • I think my LO likes the Moby -
But when I wore it to the store (maybe an hour or two, my back hurt. I'm thinking normal, but I'm going to bring it to my chiro & ask her for some tips on wearing with right posture.

Oo, good idea on taking it to the chiro. I'm gonna do that, too. I can't go for at least three weeks, so please report back on any tips you get!

I find that making sure it's not twisted on the back really helps - I spread it out over my shoulders so it's flat, and goes over my shoulder like a capped sleeve, to distribute the weight. I can carry LO in it for several hours, but my back is happy for the break at the end. I just assumed I needed to build my core muscles and any baby carrier would put pressure on my back, but maybe I'm wrong.
  • Anyone try the K'tan Breeze? I've been looking at that one online wondering if it would be comfortable in this Texas heat.

I just orders the Active one. Getting it today. Hopefully it'll be breathable for summer walks and festival type thinfs
  • How can I tell if the ktan is too big or not? I got my pre-pregnancy size like it suggested, but LO does not fit in it like the pictures. He is able to keep the gap between his chin and his chest, but he sags down really far in it, and doesn't really meet the kissable safety guideline unless I have my arm underneath him and boost him up a little bit. Also, the flap of the pouch part he is sitting in sags over his face some. I can push it back but then it doesn't support his head like it's supposed to.

Part of it might be that he isn't 8# yet, but even once he is bigger / heavier - he'll sag down further I should think. I'm thinking its too big, but wondered if everyone else had it work as pictured

  • I love my Ergo and ring sling. The infant insert for the Ergo is way too hot as PP have said but I use the seating pad part in the bottom of my Ergo without the insert piece and it has been working really well. I started that when LO was about 5 weeks old.
  • @mellymar I'm finding that too. If I shrink it in the wash it works for one wear but after that it's way too lose and won't keep her neck steady, she also sags. Have you tried pulling down the back loop while baby is in there to boost her up and tighten?

I so want to wear a wrap or carrier but I run super hot and it seems like LO is taking after me. I think I'll need to leave the baby carrying to DH. We have the Lille baby carrier and the Babybjorn. DH likes the Lille more but he's only worn it once so far.

    Anyone have the Solly wrap?
  • We love the ergo even with the infant inset which we lovingly call the taco I barely get out the door and he is asleep. I did buy a really nice framed backpack by kelty kids but is only for 16 lbs and up so we will have to wait to use it.
  • @dancegurl1118 I did pull the back piece down to hopefully seat it better, and it helped a bit but I still felt like he was sagging in there.
I was trying this by myself, so on Friday when DH is home we can try again and maybe I'll be able to get him situated in there better with a helping hand.
In the meantime I didn't remove the tag and ordered the size smaller, I'll just return one once I can try it and see if it fits better all around. Or, maybe DH will fit the larger size and it will be a benefit to have two.

  • @mellymar mine is really snug. Sometimes I'm amazed LO fits in it so comfortably. For reference, I'm a size 12ish (8 pre pregnancy) right now, 5'8'', 36G bust & LO is probably 8ish lbs in this picture. I have a Medium.

I like your plan! I hope you love it!
  • @teather5 yeah I got a large because I was going between a 12 and 14 prior to pregnancy (hooray, beer gut) and am definitely wearing 14s and some 16s now after baby. But he doesn't fit in it at all like your picture. The company does say to size down if you are between sizes, so hopefully the medium suits us better. We'll see on Friday when the next one arrives. Thanks for the pointers!

I just got the Solly and so far I love it! It's a lot less sweaty than the moby and I like the color options. LO loves it just as much(if not more) than the moby.
  • @mellymar keep me posted!

Btw I'm not wearing the extra sash here
  • @teather5 that looks so... Correct! I always look like a hot twisted mess in the k'tan. Not sure why.

I was actually wondering that and was gonna ask. ;)

Even tho the large fit funky I really dug it. I'll be super jazzed once i can get the fit squared away. Thanks for the recommend to get one

I'm having these EXACT same problems with mine. We used it today and loved it but those problems make me worried. We haven't hit 8 lbs either. We ordered the active one for hot days and I did just order an ordinal one a size smaller and should get it tomorrow so we will see how that one fits.
  • @teather5 you look exactly like how all the picturs look! Ours is saggy too and i just can't get it right. Hopefully the smaller size in ordered goes better
  • The benefit to the boba and moby (I think it's like the boba) is because you tie it yourself, it's tight every time, no matter the size.  Honestly, the boba is half the price of the k'tan (here anyway) too.  It's easy to tie on after you've had one practice run too, and everyone in the house can wear it.
  • I have a moby too and don't feel like I can get it tight enough. I need to practice more.

In the picture it actually wasn't my best "wrap" as I've gotten better since. I guess like everything it just takes practice... But with the correct size :)) I also originally bought a large.
  • @katyqv I have the Solly and it's getting better to wear. My back hurts just bc I think I have a cracked rib.
  • @teather5 do you know where to buy one? I've heard really good things about the woven wraps :)
  • @awolfff you have to get online typically unless you have small babywearing shops in your area. Used in swaps online are popular as there usually is a break in period. A babywearing group would have lots to try too which would be good as there are different weaves, thicknesses, etc.

Best advice given to me though is just to get one you love the look of because then you'll use it a ton
  • @teather5 and any other moms using the ktan. OK so we got the medium and it does fit much better. However. I still cannot baby to sit / lay in it at all like the damned pictures, or like your photo above, teather! Will it come with more practice and as baby gets bigger? Or am I just a terrible baby wearer?

He does like it, tho. He's just still not up near my shoulder and not 'kissable' unless I put my arm underneath him in the sling and lift him. He also ends up sagging in there with his chin to his chest, which is a No-No. I have to check him all the time cause I'm worried that he doesn't meet the safety requirements. What the hell am I doing wrong?

I have the ktan and couldn't figure out how to do the kangaroo hold. My local baby wearing group on Facebook said new recommendations are legs out unless your baby absolutely won't do legs out. In the instruction book try the hug position. It was a lot easier for me to figure out and do myself. They posted a video on YouTube and I watched it last night and tried earlier. Try searching YouTube and hopefully you can figure it out! They also said to others that the ktan run very big so almost everyone needs a extra small or small. Maybe that would help? My daughter is about 10 lbs at 6 weeks on Wednesday for reference.
  • LO is 8 weeks and I don't think I can use the ktan anymore. She's getting heavy where she slides down, but she's not strong enough to hold her head up for any other position. I tried on a woven wrap and loved it today. But they're expensive so just going to wear the ergo for awhile.

@mellymar in that pic I'm doing the kangaroo hold (why I didn't have to use sash) but it hasn't even been a month since and he already won't do that anymore. @caitlincunn is right that legs out is now recommended (I just learned this from my local group recently) so it's on to the hug hold.

@mellymar I'm sure it will get easier. Can you post a pic?
  • @teather5 I can try to post a pic once DH is home in two days. I know I'll be hands free and all that, but the idea of taking a pic of myself during my two days baby duty just seems to add an extra task. I don't want to give myself tasks when he is gone. I just want to survive, lol

  • @mellymar no rush! Hang in there! You're doing great!!
  • Omg just switched my ergo for the moby and I'm in love!! Baby girl fell asleep in minutes once I did the newborn wrap and i actually got laundry and the dishes done!! My girl never lets me put her down so this is a savior! She absolutely hated the ergo and so did I ..way too bulky!
  • my sister has had several different carriers includinga moby wrap, beco butterfly 2, a ring sling and a few others as well. her most recent is a tula and she is in love with it. im temped to get one (its a little under $200) but i would need to get the newborn insert. the only issue is that im not in love with any of the designs they have.

my aunt has an ergo and tried my sister's tula and prefers the tula.

im just worried if i was to use a carrier that i would roast my poor kid.
  • I used my Moby today to get some work done in my classroom (& keep pesky teacher friends who hadn't washed hands & their kids from touching her). Worked like a charm. One kid kept asking if she was still in her pouch. Haha.
I did have an older coworker come in & see her passed out in a cradle style in it & tell me she was squished like she was in the womb, to get her out. I *calmly* explained that's why she passed out. She felt safe & comfy.
  • @JessHeppell For soft structured carriers, our local store highly recommends trying on as many types as possible and buying what fits best. Some are better for different body types. Beco Gemini's are very popular too and don't use an insert.
  • I got super overwhelmed trying to make the wraps work so I'm trying to make the best of my soft structured carriers.. I did the rolled up blankets trick to fit baby in the ergo and I feel better about her not roasting in the newborn insert which was basically a thick sleeping bag.. You can barely tell there's a baby in there though!
