  • I would call an LC immediately. I am sorry you are having trouble.

Ditto.  An LC will get you back on track.  You can do it!

definitely call an lc, but in the meantime keep pumping to encourage your milk to come in.  whatever bm you get, feed to lo.  i would also continue to put your lo to your breast first before giving the bottle.  good luck.

  • I second the LC. If he does not want to latch properly or stay on, then try using a nipple shield. Do as much as you can to help your milk come in and to build your supply. Pump after nursing, eat oatmeal, practice kangaroo care time, and drink lots of water.

I wouldn't give formula, until after you have tried to nurse him and have fed him anything you have pumped.

  • Is he refusing to latch?  One tip I had from an LC was to use a syringe filled with bm and to squeeze it in DD's mouth while trying to get her to latch. It was a two person job, but it worked well.

  • I had a similar problem. My DS was almost 10 lbs and my colostrum wasn't enough for him, he got dehyrdrated. We had to supplement with formula. We tried a syringe but he didn't like taking it that way. After taking the bottle he refused to latch. For a week after I took him home he would freak out everytime I tried to breastfeed him. Once my milk came in I would try to breastfeed him then pump and give it to him in the bottle, which must made the latching on problem worse. Finally I went to see an LC. She give me a nipple shield to use with DS, he REFUSED to tatch on, even for her. I used that for a few weeks and then one day did a bait and switch on him. I started him out on the shield and then took it away. He latched on without a problem and has been doing great ever since! It can be done. That first week was hell, I was at my wit's and ready to give up BFing all together, but it all worked out!
  • I had the same problem.  I saw a LC and they taught me proper positioning and the basic techniques.  I tried manually expressing a little bit of milk on my nipple to get her interested, but that didn't work.

The thing that worked was putting sugar water on my nipple and she would latch right away.  After a couple of sucks she would unlatch, so I'd squirt a couple of drops into her mouth before she unlatched completely.
