I haven't been diagnosed with GD, but I did just fail my 1hr glucose test. I'm so nervous about failing the 3 hr, I go in for that on Monday, I'm hoping the 1 hr fail was a fluke, but it was pretty high level and I hadn't really eaten much other than breakfast that day And my test was in the afternoon. I haven't had the best diet lately and definitely over indulging in sweets so I'm feeling terribly guilty now. My baby also measured pretty large at my 24wk ultrasound (90th percentile), I am now at 28 weeks. So now I'm wondering if he's large because of my sugar levels and just didn't get caught early enough. I was just wondering how early your GD was caught and how? I'm just hoping my next test goes well, eating lots of protein till then.
I have a question for those of you who have been dealing with this for a while as my assigned nutritionist provides no actual help with anything involving details. For some reason our dinner was not getting done. I was starving and feeling sick from that so after the third time of putting it back in the oven I gave up and decided to just have some nuts. But then when it was ready 10 minutes later I felt like I couldn't eat because my timing for testing would be messed up. But that means I just had 1/4 cup of nuts for dinner which hardly seems enough. What could or should I have done?
Don't skip meals! If something like that happens, take your reading 2 hours after you start eating the actual dinner. When you write down your number, make a note next to it about what happened so your dr will know why it may be off. Not eating a meal can raise your sugars pretty significantly too, creating just as big a problem for you and baby. this is why when we have diabetic patients in the hospital with stomach bug or can't eat before a surgery we give them an iv solution with sugar in it. It's better to have an off reading due to timing than skipping a meal.
So this is my second time having gestational diabetes, it's not hard for me to eat the right food I don't really have much of a sweet tooth. My problem is that I lose weight fast when I reduce my calories. I've been on a steady diet that the nutritionist put me on, and my numbers are good if I stick to it. It's been about 10 days and I already lost 5lbs. If I eat anymore than what is on my meal plan my numbers go higher than my target range. Is anyone else having this problem? I've only gained 12lbs this entire pregnancy and just lost 5 of those so I'm a little concerned. I feel healthy but my doctor doesn't want me to lose weight either. Grrr. So anyway... is anybody having the same problem or know what I can do to keep the weight on without affecting my numbers?

I'm not sure what your meal plan consists of, but the only thing they have me counting is carbs. Protein and fats are unlimited. So I'd be eating more of that.
Still struggling with morning fasting numbers ... They have to be 5.1 mmol (I'm in Canada) or less and they are coming up 5.3 & 5.4 some mornings.... Other mornings 4.9-5.1... So frustrating!!! Wonder if I'll have to go on insulin....
How's everyone feeling? I'm exhausted and work stress is getting too me - Dr took me off work for 2 weeks...

Have you tried adding good fats/cals like nuts, avocados, nut butters etc? That would help with weight and shouldn't throw numbers off
Hi ladies. Just thought I would share this pasta I found today. I haven't eaten pasta since being diagnosed...but tonight decided I would make mozeralla chicken pasta. I found this pasta, which in one serving has 37g of carbs and 10g of protein. I figured with the chicken in the dish I would end up with more protein than carbs. When I checked my 2 hr post prandial it was 84, so I would definitely say this pasta is a keeper!

I was diagnosed like two weeks ago with GD however I just met with the nutritionist this past Wednesday. Still trying to get my numbers in check - not all that far off though. I think the nutritionist and dr. Plan to put me on insulin within the next week or two. I have to check for ketones every morning and they keep telling me to eat more carbs to get that in line but then my sugars are off more. I think they think if I get my ketones in check then they can deal with sugars with insulin. I did have one morning that I checked my numbers and they were high after breakfast. I was still commuting to work and walked 4 blocks when I got to work I checked my numbers again and they not only went down but weren't even close to high end of normal anymore. Just shows a little bit of moving helps.
My fasting was only issue - between 95-110 and even with diet and bedtime snacks it wasn't lowering. They told me it's the placental hormone release during night that increases fasting sugar and nothing you can do about it. I'm on bedtime insulin for that and it's gradually helping.
So my after dinner numbers have continually be high. I moved my dinner earlier last night, which helped a little bit. I need to adjust food a bit more. However even with a snack last night, my fasting was low!
But at least changing my food changes my numbers, I just need to find the right compromise
Anyone else have different readings within minutes? My fasting went from 5.9 to 5.3 to 5.6 within 3 mins... 1st one seemed high so I wanted a retake - right away - and 2 mins later it was up again... :-/

I don't actually seem to have this happen, but I understand the meters have a pretty big level of variability so that the readings can be a good 10% different from moment to moment.
Anyone getting really nervous about having a possible large baby? I thought, or hoped anyway, since I was diet controlled(fasting mid 60s-low 70s, post meal high 70s-mid 80s) that my baby would be average. But I had a 3D scan done, which was just for fun so no measurements were taken, and my bff's response was omg, she's a chunker! I haven't really gelled well with my doctor and just have a really big fear that he will push a c section of EDD induction just bc of a diagnosis without treating me and my baby as individuals. Sorry for the rant/rambling. This whole thing has gotten me very depressed and stressed out.
I haven't even thought of that!! I'm sure it will be ok - that's tough when you don't mesh well with Dr.... I was going to say maybe you should ask for an ultrasound through Dr to double check measurements....
I wondered how big baby is but assuming in the normal range... I was contemplating 3d ultrasound... Maybe I should just to see!
And morning all! This morning I had good numbers - I had a protein shake with strawberries late - up all night - energy !! But good fasting numbers... So I might try it again ...
Morning mommies again numbers changed this morning within mins - 5.2 to 5.3 then to 4.9 ... I have to be 5.1 or under so it's actually quite frustrating!! Seeing nurse and endocrinologist today.... Will ask about that....
So for me, fastings doing well. After breakfast are high, still finding what I can eat. But after dinner dramatically improved by just moving my meal earlier. So I'll take it!
Looking for a reality check. My fasting numbers are consistently 95-99, my limit is 95. All my post meal numbers are under limit by at least 10. I'm worried I'll be put on insulin due to fasting numbers alone. Anyone else put on insulin due to fasting numbers that are just a few points high? I go back to my nurse a week from today.

Have you tried playing with your bedtime snacks to see if you can get them a little lower? Maybe if you eat a cheese stick, or a boiled egg, something with a good amount of protein, it would bring you down, even if just enough to keep you off insulin. You still have a week, I would really try playing with your night time snack.
My fasting numbers are averaging right around 90 -- going from high 80's to low 90's. My meals are mostly not too horrible -- in the high 110's and 120's, sometimes up to low 130's. But I have the occasional outlier in the 140's or 150's that I can't always explain. I'm supposed to be under 90 fasting and under 130 1 hour post meal. I'm really anxious about being put on meds too. But, for whatever it's worth, I've finally come around to the perspective that it isn't about passing the test, it's about making sure my baby isn't getting too much sugar and if medication will help keep her safe from that, then I'll be glad to be on it. Being so borderline makes me almost want it so that I can know that she's safe.
I have been on my GD diet roughly two weeks now, and I hate food. I was told only 15 carbs for breakfast, 45 for lunch and dinner, and 15 for 2 snacks. The highest my blood sugars have been an hour after eating is 133-that was with eating something with bread because I was desperate. They told me to test my blood sugars an hour after I finish eating, not start eating. I was just wondering what your daily blood sugar limits were and what diet is most successful. I am a chef and everything I want to eat and crave I cannot because I am deathly afraid of my baby having hypoglycemia after birth. My daily average is 109 (fasting, breakfast, lunch, dinner). Am I on the right track? Any sweets recipes/recommendations? How do you break down your daily carb intake (like hourly schedule as far as eating goes)?

Hi! I am in the same boat - saw my nurse, dietician and endocrinologist today - all say keep up with the night time snack (I have a protein shake sweetened with stevia, mixed with fruit) and take 3-4 Metamucil capsules (not powder)
I also asked about evening exercise - I wondered if light weight lifting would help and the endocrinologist said muscle burns sugar so it might!! Doing that tonight (not toooo late or I'll be up all night) again light weights, more reps
Also - they would put me on insulin based on my morning numbers - daytime after meal numbers are great - so I have 2 weeks to get my a.m numbers down...
I don't count carbs but do look at portion sizes ... Wish I could help you with the numbers chef but we use a different system in Canada ... As long as your in range of what they suggest
So I'm just gonna post my whine-rant here... I'm so tired of hearing people say they just want to be done being pregnant. Yes I get that we are uncomfortable and sure I'll be glad to have my numbers go back to normal. But with the thought of the weekly BPP'S starting tomorrow to determine week by week if my baby gets to stay in or not, all I want is to stay pregnant for as long as possible. Even if I have to go on bed-rest...I just want to keep baking. But I kept my commentary to myself on their thread. Sigh.
@squigles28 I couldn't agree with you more! I want my little guy to bake until he is done, yes I'm super miserable and have had so many complications but I definitely don't want a preemie just so I can be comfortable again! I have been having biophysicals done for 3 weeks now, and was just told that he will be arriving 2 weeks early, I freaked out! I want to ensure he is healthy and I'll do whatever I have to to make sure of that!!
Definitely! I agree. Honestly I've tried to be good about complaining about the swelling heartburn stuff. The GD and hypertension have been hard to deal with mostly because I'd do anything to keep my LO healthy. I even asked my Dr for insulin if he thought it would help.
And I don't blame you for freaking out! Keep us informed. I don't know much about how this all affects the birth. Are they going to give you steroids for the baby's lungs? I wish there were something else we could do to keep the baby longer besides just watch the blood sugars.
I'm just going in tomorrow and hope the BPP is good. At this point, I'm just praying to get through the first 3. Not that I have any indication it will be bad, I just don't want to ask for too much!
@squigles28 ,I definitely think we all want our baby's to continue cooking. I'm 32 weeks tomorrow, little girl needs to stay put at least another 6 weeks! I too get slightly annoyed when I see people complaining and wanting it to be done. I don't necessarily want to be done being pregnant, because really it's been pretty easy- we've had a very mild summer, I can still exercise comfortably and other than this GD, there have been no complications. I think the way I would word it...I want time to speed up. Each day I make it without a high reading, I breathe a sigh of relief. I know the further along you are and the bigger the placenta gets the harder sugars are to control. I don't want to go on meds, I don't want my sugars to get high enough to need meds- that is my biggest fear. I don't want baby girls pancreas to have to work harder, I don't want her to put on too much weight- it's a huge guilt thing for me. I should be completely protecting her right now, and I feel like I failed that. So yes, I definitely want her to keep cooking, I do not want to have to look at her through an incubator window, but I do want time to speed up a bit so I can see for sure that she is safe and healthy and that I didn't mess things up for her. I hope your baby keeps cooking and you stay well controlled good luck on your tests. It can't be easy having that added stress!
The funny part is my FIL, who doesn't know about the GD yet or the high blood pressure either...asked me if I was miserable walking at the zoo the other day. And I honestly said no. I felt good walking, I drank tons of water, had a nice towel to cool my neck...I was good. And I knew the exercise was good for LO. So no guilt that day. I guess we just have bigger fish to fry at this point. But we all are working super hard and I keep telling myself these are good habits to keep for after the birth. Actually I was excited my LC told me I can even eat a bit more when breastfeeding!
It's also called a biophysical...basically a long US they start doing after 32 weeks. Not sure in all GD mamas but for me I also have gestational high blood pressure... So it tests how the placenta is functioning, if baby is practicing breathing, has good muscle tone, and sometimes includes a non stress test (baby reaction to stimuli based on heart rate). So they give you a score to determine if baby is happy cooking or needs to come out. That's how my Dr explained it to me And not a dumb question!

Thanks for the explanation! I hadn't heard that term before. I hope everything continues to progress for you! I understand your sentiment because I don't want baby to arrive any sooner than she's ready either.
Although I will say I'm okay with the tests rather than just having the Dr say okay we are going to do a c-section at x weeks without any reasoning. Even if that is my outcome at least I feel there will be good reason. I know a lot of you mamas have had that, so I definitely don't want to downplay that feeling either.
@squigles28 I won't be getting the shot for the baby's lungs, they try not to give that after 35 weeks, and since they want me to deliver him at 38 weeks which is full term his lungs should be fully developed. As for how it affects the birth it doesn't really affect the birth itself but since I'm on insulin (30 units a day, which is considered high) the placenta ages faster, for example if I'm 32 weeks the placenta is 34 weeks. So that's why I am having him 2 weeks early as of right now, if my insulin dose increases then I might have him even earlier. I follow the diet they gave me and I still couldn't control my sugars on my own that's why they put me on insulin. Don't be afraid or scared of the BPP, it's actually pretty cool. They check the size of the baby's femur, belly and head, the amount of amniotic fluid and how much the baby weighs. As well as the heartbeat and cord blood flow, they also check the functionality of your placenta. Then you go for the NST and you lay there for about 20-30 minutes just listening to your baby's heartbeat. I look forward to them because it's my way of knowing that my LO is doing well! Just don't be alarmed if they tell you that you have to go twice a week like I was, that freaked me out but it's there way to know that the baby is doing well. I go every Monday for a BPP and Thursday for just a NST, if anything goes wrong they are there to help. I know it's easier said then done but have faith it will all be perfect! Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Re: Anyone else struggling with Gestational Diabetes?
As for the size, I'm not sure there is anyway to answer it without speculation, especially for the percentile rankings as they vary.
The best thing for now is not to freak yet, go for well balanced diet. That is good for baby no matter what the diagnosis
