Re: Anyone else struggling with Gestational Diabetes?

  • Hi all - been feeling nauseated and no appetite past 2 days.... Anyone else? So tired & getting up to pee about 5x a night... Ugh!

    How's everyone doing?

  • @karend2014 I hope you feel better soon!
I definitely feel like that in the morning, but it gets better. I feel like my stomach hurts and I want to hurl...not sure if it is how I sleep, sore muscles or whatever. I've noticed it a lot more lately though.

Is it just at meal time or all the time?
  • @squigles28, I bought the powdered pb...haven't tried it yet, but got it yesterday. So hopefully I can do some yummy stuff with it for the next 3ish weeks. I feel good, great actually....I really can't even tell I'm just over the 36 week mark. But I think eating is becoming frustrating. I made up my lunches for the week(I'm working thurs-sun). I have 2 days worth of chicken Marsala with asparagus, and egg salad to make wraps. The snacks as usual are my hardest things to pack...but it's almost over. Can't wait to just hold baby girl and (hopefully) see the efforts of all my hard work by having a healthy baby girl.
  • I'm going to make some peanut butter and chocolate fudge this weekend... And send half with a family member who is visiting. It uses pumpkin and a brownie mix with peanut butter on top, but I'm using the powdered....I'll let you guys know
  • Those who have had GD before, how soon after were you cleared of everything and were able to eat "normal" and stop testing? I have 3 weeks left until my scheduled Cesarian (I had one with my son because he was breech and my uterus has a septum on the inside) and I cannot wait until I can just eat "normal" good again. I am dreaming of food I can't currently have and it is driving me crazy. Hahahaha!
  • I'm at 37 weeks and my baby is measuring two weeks ahead. My blood sugars have been great and we'll managed. Ive been so happy with it! I haven't gained any weight in the last four-six weeks, but my baby has gained a lb the last two months. My baby is close to seven lbs at 37 weeks. My doc is paranoid about giving birth to big babies. I am scheduled for a c section. I don't know what else I can do to slow my babies weight gain. Are these measurements usually right? I'm nervous my doc will induce early. However big babies (9llbs +) do run in both my hubby and my families W out GD. Is it genetic?
  • @ralphyrae I have read somewhere that it is hereditary. And the measurements are definitely not accurate. If i remember correctly, they are estimated based on three measurements: length of a leg, circ of the babys head and circ of babys stomach. I have a friend who's baby was diagnosed with a CHD, he was estimated at 6.5lbs and baby came out at almost 8lbs. Try your best not to stress about it too much though -- I know it is hard because I obsess about it everyday! :( Goodluck!
  • Definitely fell off the wagon today. I really think I just needed a day to not count grams of sugar, carbs, protein ratios. I have already scolded myself a thousand times and regret it. But it was also so good. Hopefully it's out of my system and for the remainder of the pregnancy I won't feel the need to indulge. Sigh. Never thought this would be so hard. Feeling: defeated
  • Don't beat yourself up, seamonkey. There's so much pressure to be so perfect with this diet and there's just no way to be so all the time. It's too much -- especially on top of everything else. And luckily although our hearts hurt when we mess up with food choices, our heads know that harm to our little ones comes from longer term trends not one high sugar day.
  • Had ultrasound today and all is well, estimated at 5 lbs 8 oz. Dr is happy with sugars. My blood pressure is up, but I had pre existing hypersention so at this point it isn't too much of a worry. Just going to up my meds.
  • turns out I do have GD. I am 34 + 2 and it makes me a little concerned that nothing can be done at this point. Even if I quickly get sugars under control with diet hasn't it already affected my baby? Is there anything I can do for her now?

I have all the dawn feelings you all did when you first got diagnosed so bare with me. Just nervous that my birth plans are out the window and I am headed for induction and a c section which is exactly what I didn't want. Yesterday was a rough day.
  • @bmac2015, sorry to hear about your diagnosis...we are all very familiar with the emotions you're going through. Did they happen to check a fructosamine or HA1C level on you? That would give you an idea of how your sugars have been running. Do what you can with diet and exercise, and don't beat yourself up over this. Can I ask how you managed to get diagnosed so late? I know my office threw a fit when I couldn't come in until 29 weeks because I was out of town. I am still all set to deliver at a birthing center....there has been no talk of inductions of c-sections. Every dr is different with what they are comfortable with, and of course all of us are different. Give yourself some time to feel all the things you do, and then regroup, get your questions ready and see what you can do from this point on and about your birth plan. We are all here for you...the thread has gotten really big, but there really is some good info(including recipes) throughout that may benefit you to read.
  • Ladies I feel so lost and confused, on Tuesday I had my regular check up with my midwife (Kaiser) and she told me I was doing great controlling my diabetes with my diet and that so long as I continue on this path, I should be fine. She then told me I can come back in a week or two, whichever is convenient for me.

Today I get an email from my OB saying she reviewed my blood sugar levels and my fasting average is 92 (needs to be less than 90), so she is recommending oral meds, twice weekly nonstress tests, and seeing an OB rather than a midwife from here on out.

I am soooo confused! How did I go from the Tuesday visit of you are all good to the email today. What's frustrating is that the last three days, my fasting numbers have been on target!

Are you guys doing twice weekly nonstress tests just because of your diabetes?!?! That's so much time off work that I don't have. I feel so defeated.
  • I'm not doing any extra testing, but my weekly avg is only 81. When I first got diagnosed it was mentioned that if my sugars weren't controlled with diet/exercise NST would be needed. Will your OB give you a week or so to play around with your bedtime snack to see if you can drop your fasting numbers 2-3 points? 92 isn't that far off from where they want you so I don't see why they can't let you try to work things out differently. On the other hand, lots of mama's like the NST's because it gives them a chance to listen to LO. Maybe work on your bedtime snack and have one done? Then if you can lower them request the test be changed to once a week rather than twice. Good luck
  • For whatever it's worth my doctor at kaiser, did give me 3 days to play with bedtime snack and timing when my average hit just over 90 and I was able to pull it back down to 87, which she's okay with. So I've so far not done extra testing except for an ultrasound growth scan (and a nst to check on baby for a while when I wasn't feeling her move one day, but that wasn't gd related). I think it's worth asking. Could you also ask both ob and midwife why they think their opinion differs from the other? Maybe that'd help with clarity for both you and them? The time off work thing is so hard. Luckily my hours are somewhat flexible, but it's still so much stress trying to fit it in.

It's been a rough few days for me in life and with that I've done a less diligent job timing my meals. But still keeping pace. My first wedding anniversary is this weekend and we did go ahead and eat wedding cake yesterday, which obviously pushed my numbers up. But I decided it was an acceptable splurge and not something that could really just be done some other time to be the same thing. It also helped alleviate stress with us which i felt was also helpful overall. Or I justified it that way anyway. :) Fasting was a touch high this morning too (92). I had less protein with my snack last night and had it a bit earlier than usual so I think that's why. Or perhaps minor cake residue. Or all of the above. Breakfast number was good, though, so I think all will be well now that I'm back on track with the more regular routine.
  • So I not sure if you all know this but foods you can eat all day and won't effect your numbers. They are cheese, beef jerk (depends on the brand),olives, sugar free drink mixes are amazing ( Hawaiian punch brand) unsweetened tea all you can have it's been working great for me I'm always hungry you know? Its rough at first then finding ways to eat what you want is great and meal times are going great.
  • Thank you so much ladies!! I asked for a few more days to try to control it with diet and she has agreed to check in again in a couple of days... So far my fasting has been in target. I am also emailing my midwife about what my doctor is saying and asking why their messages are so different.

My doctor explained that anyone taking meds or on insulin is asked to do twice weekly NSTs. I really hope my fasting stays controlled so that I don't use up my sick time before taking maternity leave. I haven't taken any sick leave in all of my pregnancy because I have barely enough for to make up two and a half months. I wish that wasn't another thing us U.S. moms had to worry about.
  • I love how they tell you once you get diagnosed with GD they immediately bring up c-section and induction because we will certainly have ginormous babies...well at my 37 week visit today he said I'm measuring too small and have to go back tomorrow for an ultrasound to see if baby girl would be better outside than in. I'm glad I made it full term, but I just hope she's okay. I'm not a big person, so he said he isn't really worried...thinks it's more of a situation of a petite person having a petite baby, but we have to find out. The roller coaster never ends!
  • @seamonkey4 , are we the same person? I had the same thing last week! I agree they automatically assume large babies and c-section.
I feel like between blood sugar (which has become oddly less of a concern), blood pressure, and baby size, it is a huge rollercoaster at each visit.
  • It's so funny @squigles28, because as soon as he said that my thought was that you and I are the same person! I'm trying not to stress. I've gained 24.8 pounds, which is pretty good imo. I know he wanted me to gain closer to 35-40 since I started small, but I just figured this is my body composition.
  • @seamonkey4 thanks for the mind words. I was diagnosed now because I passed my first glucose screen at 28 weeks. But the doctor encouraged the three hour test after seeing ketones in my urine at 34 weeks.

It is amazing to read how different providers in this thread have acted in response to the GD diagnosis. It is very helpful as I great ready for my appointment this week. I am armed with lots of questions.

What kind of lancet does everyone here use? I am afraid of needles and looking for advice on one that is as painless as possible. TIA
  • @bmac2015, I have a free style light. The lancets have number settings, make sure you have the setting on one. It will be the least painful. I wish I could tell you it doesn't hurt, but it definitely pinches. I only have to check twice a day so it isn't too bad, but I still say oww in my head lol. I hope all goes well even with the late diagnosis. Are you able to meet with a dietician?
  • @bmac2015 I use a one touch delica lancet and it is highly adjustable as far as how deep it pokes. Mine is 30 G, but there is also a 31 G just a little smaller.

@seamonkey4 as we start to get closer to inducing somewhere over the next week to two weeks, I am so nervous about all these things put together. And I still haven't explained it all to the in-laws, because they won't return our calls (totally other issue). I'm worried about NICU time and don't know if it is founded or not. Maybe I'm just buying worries as they say. My GD has been diet controlled, hypertension controlled by medicine, preeclampsia "disappeared". But I agree its just they say there are all these risks but no one can really tell me about what it will be like right after birth.
  • I have been dealing with my GD for 3 months now. And it hasn't been bad. I fact - I was put on insulin right away. So I shoot twice a day and test 4 times a day.
Is it a pain, sure - but I am now 37 weeks and have lost weight. In a healthy way - my baby is tracking a little bit bigger than my previous but not too bad at all. And my weight is now only 3lbs more than I started! I am eating healthy - getting lots of exercise and my sugars have been completely in control since I started my insulin.

It takes some discipline but don't be scared!
Just stick with the program and you've got this. I was very scared too....
  • @bmac2015 i have a one touch ultra mini and use the delica ultra fine needles, I believe they are 33 gauge. I was diagnosed later as well around my 33rd week. I had an ultrasound because they were worried he was small due to other health issues but he was on target!
Also one of the supervisors at work who is diabetic told me to test using the side of my fingers and not the pads, it's less painful and you can get two tests on a finger!
  • Got my growth scan done today...she's a little peanut. 20th percentile. 5 pounds 4 ounces at 37 weeks. But not concerning yet unless she stays about the same at my 38 week appt. I'm just glad she weighs as much as she does. I was worried they would tell me she was smaller and want to take her early.
  • That's great @seamonkey4! Last week at 36 w 6 d my peanut was 5 pounds 2 oz.
The Dr did say that closer to 5th percentile, that's when the NST starts to dictate if she stays based on size. We all know each Dr is different, but that's what mine said last week.
  • So I had them remeasure my blood pressure at the end of the appointment and it even surprised the Dr. Ha-ha!

But basically we are inducing sometime next week, assuming nothing bad at the next visit. Knock on wood.

I'll be 38 w on Saturday. I asked if we could induce at the end of next week, at almost if not 39 weeks.

So I guess we are doing this! Nervous to be induced, but given everything, I think I did pretty good to make it this far. I hope I get to go back next week to see her growth scan once more though.
  • Good luck @squigles28 !! 39 weeks is a perfect time to deliver, so I'm sure LO will be just perfect!
  • I'm just glad I was able to push for what I wanted as far as timetable. It's weird to think that while I have been fighting to keep her in there due to risk of NICU stay. And today my aunt had to remind me that while there is never a guarantee, at least it is close to when other people deliver on their own.
I just have to make it through Friday's appointment.
  • Great new @squigles28...sounds like you are willing your body/baby to keep going. So good to hear.

Today was a bad day. I couldn't bring myself to press the button after lunch or dinner. It doesn't help that all of my numbers have been...NORMAL. I mean 70-90 normal. They also did a growth scan and baby girl is in the 45 percentile....normal amounts of fluids and is measuring at a normal weight. It is FANTASTIC news but it doesn't help me with my needle phobia. Not sure I can do this.....
  • Anyone else see this article on BuzzFeed today? https://www.buzzfeed.com/christinebyrne/essential-low-carb-recipes

I made the spaghetti squash "Mac and Cheese" tonight and it's soooo good! We added bacon to ours. I'm excited to try some of the other recipes, like the cauliflower crust pizza! Hope others find this helpful!
  • @bmac2015 I know someone mentioned it earlier but try testing on the sides of your fingers, fewer nerve endings so it hurts less. And I've found that if I test my dominant hand it stings longer because I must push harder or something.

I wish I had some grand advice to help with needle phobia...but it's great that your numbers are coming out in the normal range!
  • I've been struggling with my resolve on this. I'm not doing horrible, but not brilliantly either. I keep giving in to temptation and I know I need to not. As my numbers have gotten somewhat better and I saw a good a1c score, I seem to have shifted towards thinking more exceptions than I should really let be ok are ok. It's hard, of course, as I'm tired and things hurt and I'm just over this and more and more tired of eating the same things, but it's still important for the little one and i definitely don't want to cause her any harm. I need to just keep that in my head and do better. I so want to just go out for ice cream (I feel like I'd kill for a Dairy Queen blizzard right now), but I need to just keep at it and stay strong.

38 + 5. So almost 39. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
ETA: I wish I could go to next week, as I don't feel bad, etc and am only 1 cm dilated...but with my blood pressure, I made it as far as the Dr is comfortable.
