So we've been BF and introducing formula and I plan on continuing to do both with school and work it's just easier to do formula during the majority of the day.
Well we are using Gerber gentle and she's been taking it well and not spitting up a lot but I've noticed that she hasn't been pooping as much. Do you think she's constipated or is it just the formula making her poop harder? She's been making a lot of grunting noises and straining herself so it makes me super worried. Idk if it's just her body adjusting or if I should try a different formula.

The same thing is happening with us. I don't know if I'm noticing it more now that we are introducing the formula but LO does do it sometimes with the BM too. I asked my pediatrician and he said that the brain and sphincter are not synced up during the first few weeks so the grunting and pushing are normal. Also, he said if the baby is still relieving himself within 4 days and it's soft then it's not considered constipation. Thankfully LO is still pooping like a champ haha.

Question: does anyone know how long you have to wait before switching formulas to try another brand? How much Time do you give?

This is depressing. I don't blame anyone for wanting to quit.

Thanks for the reply!!! We got some poop this afternoon! Made me so happy lol didn't think poop would ever make me so relieved haha

I heard to give a few days to two weeks. I've heard so many tips about switching so I'm unsure too. I heard it does take about 2 weeks for them to fully adjust to the formula. We tried enfimel and only did it for 2 days because LO would spit it all up and hated it. It just didn't feel right to keep having her try it for longer so we stopped it after a few tries. I think as long as don't continuously change it a lot that it'll be ok. Their tummys just need adjusting

I was concerned about LO being constipated around week 2 and when I spoke to the pediatrician about it, she told us that in infants, constipation presents itself differently than in adults... instead of not pooping, they'll still poop, but it'll be small, pellet like stool, rather than the seedy kind that we're used to seeing. Our LO ended up not being constipated; apparently it can be normal for them to just not poop sometimes! I saw your response that your LO did finally poop so I'm glad that gave you peace of mind! But for next time, according to my pediatrician, constipation in infants = pellet poops!

I feel like I need Eye of the Tiger playing in the background to get me to feed on the right..it's so painful and takes so many bad latches to get a good one. I have no idea how I'll ever be able to BF in bed and side lying because I have to physically latch her on both sides (multiple times) to get a good latch. Humph.
SAME HERE!!! And on top of the bad latches I have a hugeeee crack in my right nipple so I think that's part of why it hurts so bad on that side for me. Hoping it goes away soon so I can finally get some relief!

@dancegurl1118 now I have that song stuck in my head. Thanks :)

I know you're all probably sick of hearing it, but it gets better. Try to stick it out even if you're just breastfeeding part time. The older they get the less frequent the feedings. So this stage in their lives won't last forever and next thing you know, you'll actually miss it.

@virginiaunicorn11 Amen! It took me a very long time to embrace this. I hate breastfeeding for first several months. I do not find it magical, I just want my AA cups back and I want to run the T-Ball bases with my toddler without having to hold the girls in place and scream in pain. With my first I felt like this made me less of a mom and provider until I realized it was okay to feel like this. I finally started enjoy the closeness of it around 7-8 months but only for the nighttime feedings. I still found daytime feedings challenging and pumping mortifying. This time is a little better because I am accepting that it won't necessarily be a joyful experience.

Ok, this is meant to encourage women like me who want to EBF and are struggling... It is NOT a comment in comparison to anything else or any type of judgment. I found it helpful, so am sharing:

I just read something that I found encouraging that said breastfeeding isn't necessarily fun or a joy, often, at first. It's not something you do because you like it. It is a commitment you make to your baby. And since we live in a culture that preaches happiness and following your bliss, etc., it can feel like if you're not happy breastfeeding, then it's not right for you, and it's easy to give up. But if you can shift your thinking a bit and accept its hard and not fun, but that it takes commitment and gets better, then it can eventually be a happy and rewarding thing.

Again, zero judgement and I'm not looking at EBF relative to any other method of nourishing babies. Just for me, accepting that it doesn't have to be easy or fun for it still to be the right decision, took a lot of pressure off, personally.

Good luck, mamas! We are all adjusting, and it's inspiring to see everyone working so hard to be a good parent.

Well now I'm a crying mess.

So DS is 3 Weeks old... When he nurses I feel like it's a piece of cake. When I pump I HATE IT. Passionately! I can only get two oz both boobs combined. Which in my opinion sucks considering he nurses 40 mins on one boob! I have been drinking pineapple juice and I read that Gatorade can help also. I have been taking fenugreek also! I dislike them so much. I don't like the smell of maple syrup!

Could antibiotics be to blame? LO has been easy to breastfeed from day 1. A few days ago I was put on some antibiotics to take care of a UTI. And also a few days ago LO started being super fussy between 8pm and 11pm-ish. He gets angry at the breast and fights it but then has moments when he'll latch on and nurse for dear life. Could the antibiotics cause him to not like my milk? Would it taste different? Or cause him an upset stomach?

    1. How old is your LO?

    2 weeks

    2. Are you breastfeeding, formula feeding, pumping? A combination of two or all three?

    breast and pumping

    3. Any concerns or questions you'd like to share with the group?

LO snacks allot, very rarely does he feed for more than 10 minutes at a time. He's passed his birth weight, so he's eating enough, I just get upset cause I feel like I'm starving the poor guy.

GTKY: What's something you do for yourself to maintain your sanity?

I've been watching allot of Netflix and discovery Channel. Who would've thought Alaskan Bush People would be so entertaining?

@RaiEliJusHell1369 oh my god my husband recently started watched Alaskan Bush People...I can't do it. I'm so confused by their accent (it's not Alaskan) and the general weirdness. I watched the episode when they were trying to pick up girls and I was cringing from so much secondhand embarrassment.

    I need a beer. STAT.

Yes you do. It is excellent for your milk supply.

I have enjoyed reconnecting with my corner liquor store after 9 long months. The worst part is I drink my nightly beer on the porch while nursing my LO. Looks terrible I'm sure but he nurses so often its the best way to clear the alcohol from my system before the next feeding. Flame away.
I'm having one right now! Cheers! :P

After 4 days of sleeping peacefully for 2-3 hours between feedings, today LO was a fussy mess from 11 am until now, rarely off the Boob for more than 30-45 min at a time. Earlier it appeared to be tummy trouble (with gas and multiple poop blowouts) and now I think she's just overtired. May just let her sleep on me in the recliner all night. Seems like a setback after 3 nights in the bassinet, but it's the only place she'll stay asleep for more than 10 minutes today.

If the fussiness continues tomorrow, and it appears to be gas again, what should I try to cut out first? Dairy would break my heart, but I'm willing to try. Only thing unusual I ate yesterday was a half a pizza with green peppers on it...thinking either the peppers or the cheese may be to blame (though I've had plenty of cheese since she was born, yesterday was a LOT of cheese).

On the bright side, at her 4 day appt yesterday, she had actually gained an ounce since leaving the hospital, and while the LC observed us, she ate 38ml from the left even though she'd been on the right 90 minutes earlier for a half hour...so at least I know she's getting plenty of milk.

This is encouraging.. I'm already so stressed about going back to work in September and not having anything stocked up in the freezer yet, I'm telling DH when the time comes we may have to switch up.. Need to keep telling myself I have time right?

Baby girl is about 36 hours old now and she doesn't stop eating/suckling. They encourage me to keep her on the boob but then make comments like "she's using your nipple as a pacifier".

Every time it appears she's fallen asleep and I slowly move her off w my finger, she makes the mouthing motion or tries for her hands whenever In bassinet or if someone is holding her. I know it's early but I'm so confused on what to do.

I feel like Bessie the cow!
  • Options
@slr1229 this is why I started using a pacifier early in. She was using my nipples just to suck (it's their reflex) and they weren't productive sucks just comfort sucks. My nipples were already in poor shape. Even now a month in she loves a pacifier. My nipples do too.

I almost committed murder on an old man tonight people.
I am allowed to have one glass of wine in my own home. If you don't like it, kindly leave! Frick.
I like EBF LO but I hate pumping.
Pumping is strange and embarrassing to me lol.
Also I am jealous of everyone's babies who hold a pacifier in their mouth! Mine absolutely doesn't like it. Only the boob.

Allowed more than one my dear! Cheers

Since her birth I've had a glass of wine and my favorite beer, and I am normally super lax on everything however according to kellymom (a really great BF resource by the way) newborns livers are really immature and have a harder time than older babies in processing the alcohol. I'm choosing to abstain just for a smidge longer. Again just my decision and absolutely no judgement because had I not read that I would've kept having my glorious wine!

Basically your breast milk will match your blood alcohol level - so if you feel tipsy, there will be high alcohol content in your milk. It is best to drink while baby is on the boob or just coming off the boob, to give you as much time as possible between feedings, to process the alcohol. So how much depends on how your body processes and how often LO nurses... But you can probably safely have two, if you time it right. Some women have more, but two is my personal limit and I've been sticking to one.

There are beers called milk stout that are particularly good. Malty-er beers are what you're looking for.

Has anyone ever had a lump in their armpit. Just found one on my left side. It is tender when I touch it but not painful, hot, or red.
  • Options
@amabarne it could be breast tissue that is inflamed. Some women have extra breast tissue in their armpits that they only discover once they become engorged breastfeeding. Hot compress!

I have under both and asked my doctor about them months ago. I think I found them around month 7. She said they are completely normal and should go away after breastfeeding.

@dancegurl1118 You are right, I should have clarified that a bit more. I did hold off on beer until LO was 3 weeks and he's now 1 month old and 13lbs! So I am more comfortable with alcohol than I was with DS1 who was tiny. This make be nonsensical, don't know. Liver development probably outweighs size but his large size further dilutes any alcohol that makes it into my milk. Still keeping it to one beer, with low to moderate % alcohol and trying my best to drink it right at the beginning of a feeding gap. But I don't worry too much I he ends up wanting to nurse sooner. The breast milk will only have my BAC and if he just had a full feeding he shouldn't get much. But again, just one beer every few days. And I nurse it slowly so I don't really feel buzzed. Excuse the pun, and yes I am a cheap date.

Here's the kellymom link which was my original guide. I probably should have reread this to see the 3 month guide. Thanks @dancegurl1118 for the reminder. I will keep drinking my one beer but wouldn't do the 2 mentioned here yet. I am small though and can feel the effects of just one drink so I need to be careful. https://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/alcohol/

I just realized in thinking about all this and calculating by BAC that my LO hit one month yesterday and is already over 10% of my size. Sad! Someday he'll be picking me up.

@henrytviii it just sucks because I feel like it's such a grey area and half say "go ahead, drink in moderation" and the other half say "no! Must continue to demonize anything enjoyable while pregnant or breastfeeding!!!!!" I usually use kellymom as a good resource so once I read that about the liver (I was only 1 week PP) I decided for my personal choice to hold off a bit (I had already had a drink on 2 occasions). And I absolutely am not judging a single person who decides not to! I don't feel a single thing from a drink though, I was expecting a bit more since I was a pretty heavy drinker pre-pregnancy and thought this would reset my tolerance, haha! Enjoy your beer, and being a cheap date!
