November 2015 Moms

Buying stuff!

I am usually over prepared with everything in life, and wanting to buy things so bad (I am finding it so difficult not to snap up bargains!)

I have everybody saying buying things so early can bring bad luck, and anything can happen yet.

I have had 12 week scan and everything is fine- I am also so aware I have another 6 months to get ready but I just want to know I'm getting things done and I am not going to be stressed towards the end!

What has everyone else been buying, or are you leaving things? If so how long are you going to leave it and when are you prepared to make those big purchases? I saw people on various websites saying they were much more further along then me (I saw someone 18 and another at 25 weeks) still asking that question! I don't know if I could wait until then!!!

Re: Buying stuff!

  • I haven't bought a thing and don't really have any plans as to when I will. I'll find out the sex at 20 weeks so maybe pick up something then? Decorating the flat at the mo though so there's already too much clutter everywhere putting in a new kitchen. Not feeling the urge to go baby shopping at all.
  • Loading the player...
  • I am also having a hard time holding myself back from buying things! I am a big planner (not to mention super excited) and want to put the nursery together now! However, I have had 3 losses, so I am going to wait until after our 20/21 week scan before I do anything.
  • If you are being thrown a shower I'd wait. I know when we were pregnant with our first my MIL bought us the crib and my mom bought us the dresser/changing table combo so you may want to wait. Plus if you register you will get the registry completion coupon towards the end. I never feel the urge to do anything until I know the sex. But I understand wanting to get it done as I am a planner too. One thing always good to stock up on is diapers/wipes. Not too many newborn size though. I always have large babies and they never fit that size for long if at all. If you get some stuff done the end of the second trimester that is awesome too as when nesting finally sets in I am giant already and don't have much energy towards the end.
  • I said that I would wait until I knew the sex because then I can make a solid choice on what I wanted, and I have just not been able to help myself looking for lovely yellows and greens now! My sister has two children, one being only 6 weeks old, so she is bored of me sending her cute baby things every 10 mins!

I am just going out of my mind wanting to buy haha! Everything is so cute and I love the idea of having everything ready and perfect. Though I know I am just going to sit and look at it for ages LOL.

I will be honest, I have been so tired I am just scared it is going to get worse and worse and I will be wanting to sleep all the time and doing nothing! (Naughty, but already tempting me now!) I hope it gets better, which I have read it does.

I am going to have a baby shower, but was going to wait until around 32/33 weeks when I go onto Maternity leave, but possibly will do earlier.
  • This is my second so if it's the same sex, I won't need much at all. I started a registry just to get the completion discount, I'm not telling anyone I'm registered. I just have the mattress (all of the springs popped in my daughters mattress), carrier (never had one), convertible car seat, humidifier, and a sound machine. I won't buy anything until after I find out the sex, but even then, it won't be much. I'll have plenty of time.
  • Oh gosh maybe I am being so crazy over prepared!!

I am just so excited!! My sister says she will have loads of stuff for me as she has one of each and kept all from my niece even though she didn't need it this time around!

I honestly just can't stop haha! I am looking every single day and even want to buy things like blankets and muslin cloths so I feel like I've brought something!

I guess this is the fun of being a first time Mum :D
  • I live 1500 miles away from my parents and they were visiting when I was 10 weeks, they bought us our travel system (since they were down here) since then I have acquired a crib someone was selling for a great deal, I swiped it up cause I figured, even if we lost the baby, I would use it eventually. And we still have the travel system in the box (in case of loss, we can return it). Also have gone to a few garage sales and got burp cloths for like 50 cents, a few childrens books for cheap and a $2 nursing cover.

  • I don't think you are crazy. I am 14 weeks on Friday, know the sex and am in bargain mode. My husband painted the nursery last weekend and we have received some free items (crib, bouncy chair, bumbo seat). I have started buying diapers at the hospital's pharmacy as they are so much cheaper and have picked up a few outfits. Basically, anything that comes in for free or that I see at a garage sale and know I'll need I go ahead and pick up. Clothes and stuff, pretty much waiting on the shower and grabbing things occassionally that I am excited about.
  • My parents have encouraged me not to spend anything just yet, but I do agree with things can be taken back, I would just be so devestated.

It doesn't matter how much people buy or give me, my baby is going to be so spoilt because I just can't help myself haha!
  • I am so glad you are feeling the same knottie49173486 I have been given a crib as my Dads step daughter has a 5 month old who has just grown out of it!!

I have brought some wipes and nappies though, not too many in one size just a variation. I know I need everything so just trying to get prepared!

We have bought a few small things here and there, largely because it helped keep morale up, especially when morning sickness was really bad. Which most would consider way too early to buy anything, but for me I wasn't worrying myself over small buys. I have done a whole bunch of online shopping and putting stuff in my cart for later.

We have made one big purchase, because we found a great deal on the baby monitor we wanted. As in, over $50 off, so we went for it. It's been getting use already, though, because we have been using it to check in on our pups while we are away, haha.

We are putting an additional $500 a month into savings in prep, but we aren't really buying anything, especially big ticket items until at least 24 weeks

  • I can't help but be drawn in by good offers!

Was just looking at a baby monitor now which was on offer actually, messaged my partner and asked and he said that I just can't help myself. Too true haha!

We are also putting money away monthly for the big things that we do not have.

I'm waiting till we know the sex. I've already got 2 boys so if it's another, it's just a few nursery things, if it's a girl look out bank account cause it's go time!! Lol

I said this too if I have a boy. I have so many girl things, I won't need anything, but if we have a boy....look out BRU, here I come ;)

  • Yea, I'm only 12 weeks but I can't stop looking at different consignment shops and yard sales. We're being given a crib and I have to fight myself from going and picking it up right now… I want to wait until we know the sex so that we can get the room painted first. I had a loss at 14 weeks so I'm able to hold back a bit… but even with that in mind I've still bought a few things here and there. My SIL will most likely host a shower, but my family just doesn't spend a lot of money (not that I expect it) so I don't want to count on that. At our family showers there tend to be a lot of clothes, blankets, diapers, and washing stuff so I'm keeping my eye out for larger things at a good price like pack and play, swing, and stroller (got a brand new highchair for $10!!). The stroller I want was on sale for almost $100 off with coupons and I think I'll really regret having not bought it later…….

  • This is my second so I have almost everything. 6 months is a LONG time. Trust me you don't have to have everything prepared now.
But anyway, I have a few things to buy that I will towards the end of the pregnancy. With DD I didnt get anything until after the shower (28 weeks). Nursery wasn't prepared until I went out on my mat leave at 36 weeks.
  • We have been given a crib and a cradle and a pack and play and a play mat...I have been going crazy and I have gotten some blankets and a couple cheap long sleeved outfits for both boys and girls...but besides me actually buying stuff blankets and like 4 onesies are it...I'm afraid to get anything else...Because of the superstition that buying early is bad luck..
  • It's the same with my family which is why the deals are so important when I can get them!

Babies are expensive enough with out snatching up some bargains while I can!

Glad I am not the one going out of my mind and wanting to buy things though, I do want to buy but I am scared something would go wrong.
  • Kern91Kern91 member
Well I haven't started to buy anything yet. I will be doing so as soon as I'm done painting the baby's room and getting that part done with so I have a place for things.

See the thing is we were not planning on having anymore kids so I sold EVERYTHING! Two days before I found out I was pregnant I sold our rocker. The only stuff I have left is a crib, sheets and blankets but I had two girls so they r girly and a stroller. So I have to buy everything from clothes to baby gear!

With my first I was given almost everything we needed for the first year so I never really had to buy much. We were also overseas so there wasn't a large selection of baby things to choose from so I never got the urge to shop. I kept some things from DS1 and we found out over the weekend we're having another boy. I bought a few outfits just because I got rid of my smaller sizes and they were 50% off. I have a registry started so I can keep track of the things I want and DH and I plan to buy one big ticket item per month to help spread out the costs. It really is up to you how you want to do it. With DS1 we bought our first outfit after the anatomy scan (it wasn't until 27 weeks for us!). This time we found out at 13 weeks and we still bought him an outfit just because its kind of a tradition we want to carry on.
  • I am moving soon so waiting to see how much space is in the new place before I buy.  That said, I've been checking Craigslist and consignment shops for used nursery furniture.  We are probably going to buy all used furniture.

  • Aww, I can't wait until I know if its a boy or a girl! I really don't mind myself, and honestly can say I am happy for which ever as long as they are healthy.

I just want to know what I can start buying I am so full of excitment!!

I want to hold off on the big purchases until I know the sex as I don't want everything to be unisex. Although I have so many things on a list that already are haha!

    Can't resist!
  • sdnyc99sdnyc99 member
I'm the opposite of a planner, more of a procrastinator - haha. So haven't bought anything except for a cute little onesie from a race I ran this weekend (couldn't resist). We both have big families so I expect to get a lot of gifts.

And I'm a teacher who has all summer off, so will wait until then to start getting the nursery together.

But if you feel like you want to buy, I say go ahead and have fun! Keep receipts and be prepared to make returns if someone gets you duplicates. But you're excited & happy and will in all likelihood need and use the stuff. So what's it going to hurt??

I have the entire crib set picked out. And every big ticket item picked out. I can't resist baby stuff. DH says I'm not allowed near Target or BRU anymore.
  • I am happy for positive responses!

I know it is only natural as a Mum (especially as its my 1st and I have nothing!) to want to go out and spend loads of money!

My partner has given up on trying to have a say as everything I want is on our list and he is just happy to nod and agree. Even if I don't leave the house I can't help browse on the internet or save everything I want into our favourites. PLUS sending them to him every 10 mins, he must have over 1000 emails.

I have such a long time but cant wait until baby is here!!!!!
  • We did find some really good deals that we could pass up at a yard sale. Other than that I am waiting until anatomy scan.
  • When I get an urge to shop I usually just add this to the amazon registry we started.  I may start checking out garage and consignment sales once we find out the sex but we'll only really need clothes if it's a boy.  My brother still has all my daughter's baby clothes (and then some) because they had twin girls.

I didn't buy a thing until after my son was born. It was a good thing too because 2 ultrasound techs said I was definitely having a girl.
  • I'm almost 16 weeks. We are not finding out the sex so no reason to wait til a certain time. I already bought the crib/mattress, high chair and dresser and some sheets to have extra. Ordered this bc I work for a retailer it it was associate shop days so instead of paying 1500 for all I got for under $700. Totally worth saving money. Still in boxes. I also got a barely used cheap bassinet and umbrella stroller from a rummage sale site bc I couldn't pass up the cost. I also got a ju ju be diaper bag bc I didn't want the pattern to sell out. I won't register for a ton of big items bc all my family lives out of town and I am traveling for the shower. I still think I have a ton of stuff to register for since this is our first. If I get anxious or excited I might buy a little thing here and there while out like a stuffed animal. No big deal right?? I think We may paint nursery this weekend so it has time to air out, and our summer weekends are pretty busy with weddings and stuff. Can't wait to set up though, will try to resist until 28 weeks or so if I'm not getting too big.
  • I was doing some looking around yesterday and its sooo hard to not want to buy anything.. But as of right now i am just looking at pricing and planning..
Everyone is telling me not to buy a single thing until after the babyshower but i feel like that wont give me much time to plan and do alot of stuff..
I plan on buying one outfit once i find out the gender late june and it will be the outfit the baby will be coming home in!
Its super hard but I know i will get soo much stuff for the baby shower so no point in going on a rampage and buying everything!

Im 14 w 3 d. I'm having a really, really hard time not buying things. My family was so exited that my parents already bought us our crib. And we have already received some toys/clothes/books. I'm trying to concentrate on the nursery rather than baby items. I just bought the drapes haha.
  • Making a secret Amazon registry has helped so much! I have barely been tempted to drag my husband out and buy stuff. I'm 12 weeks today and have had 3 ultrasounds and heard the heartbeat all 3 times (benefits of needing a specialist to help me get pregnant!). I have been keeping an eye out for good deals on cribs and gently used baby things like swings and bouncers. With that said... I'm dragging my husband to ikea this weekend and am determined to leave with a rocking chair

I wasn't going to buy anything until about half way through or once I found out the sex, but I found an incredible deal on an all wood crib with a mattress so I had to buy it!! And now I bought a few small items because it's so hard not to buy!!!!

I live in Ireland and the whole shower thing hasn't really rolled out completely over here - some people do it but its not so popular as in the states. We are quite lucky as we will get quite a few good hand me downs from my sister and cousins - but my hubby is quite like the OP - so excited! - so we have started buying things from a baby event that a local supermarket chain holds a couple of times a year - we got our monitor at half price and a steriliser and bottle set too. We aren't gonna find out the sex so we've also bought some non gender specific things like the travel system (as the one I wanted was a silver grey so will suit either boy or girl) and we're looking at some beautiful Boori cots on gumtree for good deals too! My friend just also had a little boy so I'd been looking at some cute outfits on ebay - I came across the most beautiful little 3 piece dungaree set, and although the labels and everything were still attached, I could see there was some staining on the jacket - I bought it anyway!!! I just loved it so much and it was such a good price and I thought that I would just get it dry cleaned in case we have a little boy! The cot set and the nursery theme I want is all gender neutral also so I will definitely be picking things up as I go!

So, OP, you are definitely NOT alone!! I am a first time mum also and its only natural to be excited and want to prepare for your first baby! (Or any baby for that matter, I think!!) So I say, knock yourself out! Buy things that you really love, that you know you won't get sick off, that you are definitely going to use as you will need to buy them at some point anyway! However, I do think it's wise to also take the hand me downs that you're being offered, like clothes etc. to save on some cash as they grow out of most things so quickly anyway!! Good luck in your pregnancy and enjoy your shoping spree!!
  • This is #4 for us so we have most of the stuff needed already. We are not finding out the sex of the baby so we are using the gender neutral things from the previous children. However we did already buy a double stroller, which we got on a GREAT deal. Now we only need the small things like cloth diapers and bottles. My parents are buying some of the diapers (they have always bought something needed for each child). So we are pretty much ready and only 15 weeks. If you are having a baby shower then I would definitely wait until after that to get whatever else you need. Most things you need you will get.
  • We found out last Wednesday we are having a boy!! We are over the moon!! So the only things we have bought so far is clothes. My hubby and I are big into airplanes, and any piece of clothing that has airplanes on it, we have been buying lol we haven't bought any big purchases yet. My parents are buying us our crib, and they want to go ahead and get that soon. We will buy the matching dresser and changing table, but spread it out. I'm buying our travel system because they are pretty expensive. I'm really leaning towards the Britax B-Agile B-Safe. Most of my friends and family have used these and LOVE IT!!!

  • We found out early with a blood test that we are having a girl!! I've bought a few little clothes to help it seem more real.

Mostly just using Pinterest with the hubs to figure out decorating. Parents want to buy crib, stroller and car seat when we get that sorted.

We will start early as we are both planners, I say do what makes you feel comfortable. You will get all sorts of opinions about everything baby related, at the end of the day you need to do what's best for you, your man and your baby!!
  • Once we find out the sex it's on. I already want to buy so much but I'm trying to wait! I know I will have a shower too so I don't want to start buying already when I know we will get a lot of stuff then. We are also having a diaper bash with our shower to make it a guys thing too. Girls shower first and then we will bring out the keg for the guys, bring a pack of diapers get a cup for the keg. I've had friends who have had a diaper bash and didn't have to buy diapers the first year. Its super hard not buying stuff already!

I want so badly to set up my nursery and have some clothes for the baby.  I have also bought books from goodwill (I found books from when my husband and I were little so it's fun).  But my mom keeps scaring me by saying most people wait a long time to set up the nursery, should something happen.  My baby shower isn't until I'm 35 weeks.  I understand what you are feeling.  I'm a huge planner and I want the empty nursery to feel real.
