I am all for a half a glass of wine in The third trimester but not right now. How you even want the taste of alcohol in the first Tri is Beyond me. I want to vomit just thinking about it.
With my cravings for coffee, wine, and cocktails, hubby drinks and I kiss his lips. Gives me just enough flavor to satisfy.
I definitely feel left out too! I would drink wine every night. I miss it terribly, but would never even think of how I could get around possible harm. This is the baby I am meant to grow, protect, and nourish. I happily went cold turkey on everything that could be of possible harm.
My oldest has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder after her birth mother drank rum her entire pregnancy. My sweet girl has a 30% decrease in her gray matter on her brain. Her mother was a poor, uneducated women who lived in a culture that had no prenatal care or education. We have alternatives and the education to not make risky choices once we know we are pregnant. It is hard, I imagine, but FASD is very very real and our kiddos are worth not setting them up for the challenges FASD brings.
No. I normally don't even drink when I'm not pregnant and haven't gotten drunk since I was a teenager so I'm certainly not going to drink while I'm pregnant. I have enough problems, why risk something when it's very easily avoidable. I would go with the non alcoholic drinks even though they suck imo.
I keep having a recurring dream that I am drinking and suddenly remember that I'm pregnant and start to panic. Glad they are only dreams! I would never compromise my baby's health for booze...but damn I miss it!! Haven't even thought about non-alc drinks...fun idea!
Wow, lots of judging on a support site. Try the book Expecting Better by Emily Oster. She covers it. Or just talk with your doc to be clear. Other cultures are less uptight than we are about those things with no higher rates of FASD. Just don't go crazy.
My doctor says otherwise. I'll stick with his advice.
And my doctor says otherwise He said no drinking at all the entire pregnancy Your little one gets the alcohol in, if you have 0,5 promil alcohol in your blood then your baby has to.. We can quickly proces the alcohol out of our body's. The baby can't
I think you can hear a lot of different opinions about different doctors You have doctors that say "yes you can smoke because stress is more harmful" Wil you smoke then?!
Everyone know it CAN be harmful. So just don't do it. Its that easy

One of the books I read asked if "you would give a newborn an alcoholic beverage?" The answer is NO so don't drink while you're pregnant. It's the same thing!

No it's not.
The lack of basic science knowledge on this board is kind of shocking.

I literally crave alcohol, my absolute favorite drink is called a root beer float it's a short of root beer schnapps, 2 half and half's and some Pepsi. I've been drinking actual root beer floats to help, it's not the same thing but it's enough to help. Find something that tastes close, that could help. (I'm a occasional dinner) so this is really weird for me. If you can get Jones soda I know the green apple has a light vodka taste without any alcohol.

That's a great book, btw.
If American views on alcohol during pregnancy were accurate, literally everyone in Europe would have FAS.
I love Emily's book! It really helped me discern between the accurate and the more alarmist ideas of what a woman can and cannot do during pregnancy. I'm trying for a super chilled out pregnancy so this book helped immensely!
Is it that hard to just avoid alcohol for 9 months? I'm sure a drink here and there is fine but common sense would tell you that alcohol is not good for you so why would it be good for your baby?

Since when is red wine bad for you?Who has ever said that?
Do you avoid all fast food? Artificial sweeteners? Sugar? Processed food? Those are bad for you. Better not touch any of those while you're pregnant either.
It drives me crazy when people act like they need to bubble wrap pregnant woman. I am much more comfortable with a small glass of wine then chicken filled with antibiotics, pecticide covered veggies, and processed foods. Other countries consume alcohol without issue. It is all about moderation. Am I going to go get wasted obviously not...but I see nothing with a glass after dinner.
This is from the CDC "FASDs are caused by a woman drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes to the baby through the umbilical cord. When a woman drinks alcohol, so does her baby.
There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy or when trying to get pregnant. There is also no safe time to drink during pregnancy. Alcohol can cause problems for a developing baby throughout pregnancy, including before a woman knows she’s pregnant. All types of alcohol are equally harmful, including all wines and beer." I'm not much of a drinker anyway (i actually have a kind of allergic reaction to it i get covered in hives every time i drink no matter what i drink) so going the next year or more (i plan on breastfeeding) with out alcohol is not a big deal to me. The way i look at it if there's a chance it could cause my baby to have to struggle like that the rest of their life then I'm not going to do it I'm not going to risk it for my babys sake. When it comes to my child I'd rather be safe then sorry.

Better safe than sorry. Don't ride in a car then. Ever.

So drinking while pregnant is the same as driving while pregnant? Being in a car doesn't cause my child to be born with mental and physical issues does it? And i NEED to drive you don't NEED to drink.

I've done the research and I have two very healthy, thriving children.

Yep. I'll have to agree with you on this, I won't be drinking at all. I don't NEED alcohol so why would I take any risk, no matter how small? Though I wasn't a drinker before I got pregnant so that could help as well. I guess I'm a little bit surprised anyone feels the need to drink? I mean you only have to wait what, another 7 months?

And I'm just saying to me alcohol isn't worth it the benifits don't out weigh the risks to me. I just don't understand why drinking is so important to some people. And how is wanting to be safe rather than sorry a bad thing? Its not like my baby is missing out by me not drinking.

No, and do what you choose, but getting all pearl-clutchy about someone else having a half glass occasionally is the issue.
It's hilarious to me that people get all judgmental about a small amount of wine, but stuff their faces with soda, fast food, processed food, sugar, etc. and nobody bats an eye.

Exactly! Why is drinking that important to some ladies? If you NEED a glass of wine to get through your day thats got its own set of issues. Its just like cutting down on sodium and caffeine I'll do whatever i have to to keep my baby safe.

How have I never heard the term "pearl-clutchy?" Is it new? It's perfect. Naturally, it's my new favorite phrase, and I will be using it in any conversation where my MIL is discussed. Thank you thank you!!!

Just curious... Does anyone from personal experience or know someone who has given birth to a child with FAS when they said they've only had a couple of drinks here and there during the 3rd trimester? Tried to do some research and never get real answers.
Guys if you want the experience of being drunk and throwing up Virgin Ceasars are really doing it for me. I love them so much I end up tasting it twice. (
