Sciatica?

Any other ladies struggling with sciatica and know of any helpful remedies? Or anyone else struggling and want to have a moan about it. Mine gets me if i am sitting down for a while then go to stand up then my leg loses feeling and i have to crawl around on the floor to the amusement of my 2 year old who thinks we're playing bears...

Re: Sciatica?

  • Yes!!! Cat/cow stretch has been helping me.

  • I dealt with it when I was pregnant with my son. I second @mariahd43 on the cat/cow stretch... also chiropractic care helped me tons.
  • Cat/cow stretch? Please explain :)
  • on hands and knees, arch your back up as high as you can, and then dip your back down as low as you can (think, sticking your booty and chest out)... repeat
  • Cat/cow stretch? Please explain :)
It's a yoga stretch that is probably easier for you to goggle so you can see pictures instead of trying to explain it.
It's a yoga "stretch" definitely google cat/cow and while you are at it google "pigeon" and "royal pigeon".  I had this really bad with my first and off and on with this LO.  Good luck! These stretches will help, but you have to do them regularly.

  • I also find child's pose helps me out. As does a nice heating pad. I usually shower at night, but have been switching to the morning because the hot water helps loosen everything up for the day.
  • Ive invested in some stick on heat packs and will get on the stretches as of this evening thankyou everyone xx
  • There's a stretch I learned from my yoga instructor that really helps me but it's hard to explain...

Cross your right foot over the left and put the majority of your weight on the right foot. Your feet should be portioned so your pinky toes are touching.
Then depending on flexibility fold forward holding onto a counter/chair/table/nothing.

Then to deepen the stretch walk your hands to the left slightly until desired stretch is achieved.

This can be repeated on both sides.

It should feel like you are stretching all up the back of your leg and butt and into your lower back.

I've tried googling a picture of it but I can't find it... I'm going to ask my instructor if there is a name for it tonight...

    Hope this helps!
  • Mines hurting too! So not fun. Went and had a great prenatal massage and it helped a little. Gotta try some of these stretches again to see if I can find some relief. Thanks ladies!
  • I highly recommend prenatal yoga and yoga in general.  It's absolutely the only thing that has given me 100% relief for my back.  Whatever you do, don't make yourself immobile over long periods or sit around a lot, it will make things worse.

  • Sitting/bouncing on an exercise ball has been way more comfortable than chairs for me. A warm rice pack helps some, and I have an essential oil blend that helps as well. Ditto some of the stretches pp mentioned.

This is odd, but I can tell a difference depending on what I wear, lol. Under-belly mat jeans or anything with a tighter waistband makes it worse, full panel jeans are ok (who am I kidding, I live in yoga pants).

  • Everything PPs said - yoga is amazing. Also invest in a knee pillow or something to keep your legs in line at night. That was a major game changer for my sciatica.

  • Maternity belt, chiropractic care, my husband massages my hip/butt on the affected side, and a figure four stretch while sitting on a chair (take the foot from the side with the pain and place it on top of the opposite knee and stretch).
  • Yoga, chiropractic care, and bio freeze has saved me.
  • Oh, one more. A friend recommended taking a pencil and sticking the eraser end as hard as you can into the ball of your big toe. It weirdly actually works.
  • Roll it out! Foam roller is my best friend!

  • I've been getting it in my left thigh.  Pre Natal yoga helped a lot.  I just started Chiropractic care so I can't speak for it yet.

  • Thankyou again ladies i tried the stretches before bed which seemed to help. Might try and book a massage for later in the week if i can.
  • My maternity SI belt is a life saver and chiropractic care has helped a lot.

I have really loosely jointed hips already and Relaxin has made that worse so I have found heat makes my sciatica worse but ice helps, so if one doesn't work, try the other.

Also ditto on prenatal yoga and the stretches mentioned by PP.
