  • My random is that I hope the rest of 2015 goes better for us than this first week has gone.  I put my girls to bed last night and went downstairs to do some laundry.  Somehow, I managed to knock my antique wringer off the laundry shelf.  I was bending down to pick up clothes and suddenly it sounded like the ceiling was falling in.  I turned to see what was happening and got hit across the back of the head.  I felt back there and saw blood, but had no way of knowing how bad it was.  Of course, DH was at a church thing and his phone was turned off.  I called my sister to come over, but before she could get there, DH got home.  He's a former EMT, so I trust him to know what to do.  It turned out to be a half inch cut and just bruising across the back of my skull.  I just iced it and it's better today.

My sister reminded me that it had only been 4 days since we had the paramedics at our house because DH went into random anaphylactic shock Friday night.  It's scary, because there are no triggers that we can figure out.  He was poisoned by his ex-wife over a decade ago and now he just starts to break out in hives randomly.  (That first time he coded 3 times in the ambulance.) This attack was pretty severe with having to use the epi pen and him asking me to call 911.  So, yeah, I'm ready for a better week.

Here's a pic of the wringer.  Which is going to live with my sister now, since she wanted it when we first divided up my mom's stuff and apparently I'm jinxed and I don't want it around anymore.  At least it didn't fall on my girls.image

Everyone is OMG THE COLD here today, so I decided to stay inside. Right now it's 15 degrees and sunny with no wind (for folks who live in warmer weather this means that the weather is totally fine for going outside in). But since I already decided to not go outside for our daily walk, M is now napping on me while I walking slowly on my manual treadmill. Perhaps this might make for acceptable winter exercise?

If I had some pressing reason top go out I would. But bundling up multiple children, getting in and out of carseats, etc, just gets old. I'm not going anywhere.

School was cancelled here today due to wind chills of -25 and colder and ds2 could have gone to music class today but I decided I'm not setting foot outside until I have to go to work......mail is still out side cause I have refused to even open the door to get it.

I'm freezing with you Pip. G's DC opened late because of the cancellations though. So at least we got to sleep in an hour.

  • @flummadiddle85‌ , before you can compress the fluffy jackets, you have to convince the kids they want to get lost in that fluffiness and that you're not going to drop them out of their jackets this time.....so yeah, lots of work.....staying inside is much wiser......

  • So I'll be watching my 3 nieces and nephew on Saturday for 6 hours. Give me your favorite activities to keep a 2nd grader, 1st grader, 4yo, and my 22month old busy inside. I'm guessing it'll be too cold to play outside, especially since I would still have my 4month old with me. Shaving cream on the windows/table? Halp!

bake sugar cookies or similar and have them decorate them with frosting......or leave them unbaked and using new paint brushes, have them "paint" the cooky dough (I'd have to look up the recipe for the "paint" if interested). When the cookies are all "painted" then they are baked and eaten.

We'll be making construction paper mosaics this afternoon once I brew some coffee and pay bills. Also, we'll probably bust out feathers and glitter too. It usually keeps A occupied for at least an hour.

Maybe, I still have leftover frosting in the freezer from when we did that here before Christmas. V was more interested in eating everything, and the 4|year old lost interest well before his sisters. I would tale them somewhere, but I'm not sure if I can manage 3 across in my van since the older 2 are still in boosters.
  • It's currently 62 and sunny here. We just got a new rug for the guest room. Yet for some reason it's like pulling teeth to get the grandparents to visit.

  • @flummadiddle85‌ , I wouldn't do this with the kids at their current ages......but I remember being in 4th-5th grade my mom gave my brother and I a sack of mini marshmallows, a box of toothpicks, and a lit candle each to roast mini marshmallows on when the power went out in the evening to keep us occupied. Do all the kids have to be doing the same thing at all times? If not, you could have the older ones doing a craft project that involves pieces too small for the younger ones or is otherwise age inappropriate for the younger ones but that the older ones can do fairly independently in one room while the younger ones play with their toys in a different room.

  • @flummadiddle85‌ I'd do an obstacle course! I used to do one with my students as an early morning thing to get them woken up and less fidgety. Kid yoga is also a ton of fun. I don't know a ton of poses, but we would practice crouching, then slowly growing tall like a tree, putting out branches (arms up), and then standing on one "root." Uh oh, kid is awake. More later.

  • @ComeMai‌ lots of scary stuff! Hoping you are all feeling better, and that its a better year! Maybe you just got all the bad stuff out of the way in the first week? ;)

Just got back from Urgent Care with DD2. She jumped off the stairs this afternoon & sprained her foot. It was from about 2 stairs up, I think, because that's where DD1 was jumping from when I told her to stop earlier. Seriously thinking of wrapping DD1 in bubble wrap. ;) Or maybe bad things happen in threes & we're good for the year.

  • Ok, seriously. What am I forgetting? I'm making my cousin a New Mommy essentials kit. So far my list includes:

    Ring Sling
    Tula
    A+A Blankets
    Honest Diapers
    Honest Wipes
    Honest Baby Wash
    Honest Lotion
    Motherlove Nipple Cream
    EMAB Nipple Cream
    The Womanly Art of BFing
    Lactation Cookies

What types of things should I add? I'm looking for useful things that you wouldn't have thought of. I'm also trying to keep it more natural to try to sway her rethinking some of her choices. Plus, she'll get to try things she would of never thought of.

    Amber necklace

    Nursing necklace

Not natural but Lansinoh Soothies saved my BF'ing experience.

Maybe a nice reuasable water bottle

    Prefolds for burp cloths

Wetbag for the diaper bag to use for wet/dirty clothes, etc.

Maybe a neat to-go changing pad with PUL. I think some of the CD companies make them.

Those hydrogel nipple disc things totally saved me the first week of breastfeeding.

  • Ok, good suggestions! I don't want to go too crazy with the amber necklaces and stuff. I already know their thoughts on those. However, the burp cloths and gel pads are perfect! I could still use just a couple things to round it out.

LOL I love babies and I love helping people. It's probably why I am going into nursing. However, I got pretty insane with most family members. My cousin just happens to be very dear to me as we grew up together, but grew apart as we grew older. Also, she's clueless. Anything to help her is a good thing.

  • To pile on the bad day, we had to take C to the ER for the second time in less than a week and a half. Last week, he inhaled a piece on a nut, and had to be put under to get it out. This week, he has been super sick, and hasn't been able to keep anything, even the smallest bit of water, down for 2 days. The pedi sent us to the ER because he was dehydrated. Thankfully, zofran was able to let him keep enough fluids down we avoided the IV this time, which was the worst part of the trip last week.

  • @flummadiddle85‌ ..... another idea for you. Yarn Tangles: each person gets a different color ball of yarn and a chair. Allow 1-2 minutes to wrap or tangle the yarn around the chair. The chair may not be moved or lifted and making knots in the yarn is not permitted. At the end of the designated time the timekeeper says stop and the team/person moves to a different chair (chair wrapped by another person/team) When the timekeeper calls go each team/person begins to remove the yarn from their new chair. Once again the chair cannot be moved or lifted. The first team/person to untangle the yarn from their chair and roll it into balls is the winner. Idea courtesy of our EI team newsletter from last year - I haven't tried it.

We just glue it onto another piece of construction paper. I either use liquid glue and zig zag over the paper then let her go nuts, or I give her a glue stick and she swipes the paper herself.

  • L has woken up once an hour every hour all night long. He's got head and chest congestion, but I've fine everything I can do (saline, snot sucker, humidifier, sleeping on an incline in swing, Tylenol). I don't know what else to do. Would an ear infection make him fussy but not scream-in-pain upset?

Poor you Jane! I hope you are able to get some sleep.

E had an ear infection once and the only reason I knew something was up is because she wouldn't suck on anything. She is a tough little one from dealing with reflux pain but she wasn't even really miserable with her ear infection. So maybe that is possible for L too. Poor little guy :(

  • Jane I'm sorry too.  Hugs.  That is just the worst.  I hope he starts feeling better and you both get some rest.

Maple, yes it can be an ear infection with no fever.  But... that just sounds like partly behavioral and partly teeth.  P pulls on her ears a lot too.  They also sort of discover that they exist, so that automatically makes them a toy.  I wouldn't think anything of it.

  • Ear infections can also be mild and go away on their own.

I usually watch for excessive discharge in the ear. Ear pulling and rubbing, and fever.

  • My kids rarely get fevers with ear infections. And when they get them, they usually get double ear infections. Colds are usually what spurs them for my girls.

    Hugs to everyone!
