TTC After a Loss

Had a not so fun morning in the ER. **updated**

I woke up this morning to blood clots the size of my fist and severe cramping. I call my OB, and they tell me to head to the ER (I'm 5 days out from my d&c).

According to the lovely vaginal u/s, I still have quite a bit of tissue leftover from the procedure. And my cervix is dilated. So they prescribed me methergine to take every 8 hours for 3 day.

I'm pretty upset, because I had the d&c to avoid doing this at home. I'm feeling pretty hopeless about this. I just really wanted to put the physical part of this behind me.

Has anyone else a similar experience? I just really thought this was over with after the d&c.

-----------

I finally started bleeding heavily and passing clots on Friday afternoon. About 10 hours after my last methergine tablet (go figure). And I had another episode of heavy bleeding and blood clots on Saturday. And virtually no bleeding and cramps since.

I had my post op appointment today, but my OB was at an emergency delivery. They tried to get me to reschedule, but I told them that I wanted to have my u/s done today, at the very least. The u/s tech (who has been amazing through this entire ordeal) said that it looks like I've finally passed everything! I still have to get confirmation from my OB, but I'm feeling very hopeful that this horrible experience is coming to an end (at least the physical part of it).

Thanks again, to all of you, for being wonderful, supportive, and genuinely awesome!

  • Oh fuck (((((((((((((hugs)))))))))

This is so scary. I had a hemorrhage after giving birth and the clots scared me so much. Please take it easy and rest. If the bleeding picks up please call your doc. I know they are giving you meds to help you pass the tissue but did they tell you what to expect? I had a D&C to stop the bleeding.

  • I am so sorry to hear that Elsie... I haven't had a D&C, but I am continuing to bleed from my loss on October 3rd. I am right there with you on wanting the physical part of this to be over with, so I can start to move forward emotionally. I hope the methergine does what it's supposed to do over the next couple of days and that your discomfort improves. Hugs to you.

  • Suuuuccckss! So so so sorry!!

I had basically the opposite situation, I wanted to avoid the D&C, so I took the medication and then ended up having a D&E anyway (I think it was a D&E, they aren't very good about explaining these things).

The only advice I have for you is that it will be over before you know it.  It sucks super bad, so take care of yourself in whatever way that means to you!  I suggest wine, brownies and thai food.

  • No advice just ((HUGS)) I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope you have a quick and smooth recovery.

  • @ElsieMae, I'm so, so sorry.  I'm mad for you that the D&C didn't get everything.  :(  Although I haven't had a similar complication, I totally understand the feeling of just wanting this to be over.  These things seem to drag on forever. :(

I'm hoping the medicine will take care of everything.  When are you supposed to go back for a check-up?

  • Damn it, I am so sorry :( I really, really, hope this ends for you soon. Giving you all the *hugs* you need.
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Oh no!! That is really scary. I bled quite a bit and passed large clots about 5 days after my D&C too, but a tv/us revealed only a small area of "suspected tissue." They weren't sure if it was tissue or an area of "blood vessel involvement," so I just had repeat ultrasounds once a week and they monitored my hcg until it was under 5. My bleeding  incident only lasted about 12 hours but it took 3 weeks after that incident for my tv/us to come up clean. So, I don't have any other advice about having to take the meds. But do make sure they monitor you weekly until an ultrasound is clear of suspected retained tissue and your hcg is under 5. Take care of yourself and don't overexert. Big ((hugs)). I'm sorry this is happening to you.

  • I'm supposed to take it easy, and let the medicine do it's thing, until my post-op appointment on the 17th. I'm supposed to head back to the ER if I start filling a pad in less than an hour, or if I have blood clots larger than my palm.
They didn't really tell me why it was happening. Just that there was a lot of tissue left over. I assume it was just missed tissue left over from the d&c.

So frustrating. It's likely because they do D&Cs "blind" so they don't really know if they get everything kwim?

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
  • @Sterling13‌ I'm so sorry to hear that you went through something so similar. But I'm so happy to hear that the methergine worked for you. I'm terrified that I still won't pass all of the tissue, and end up having another d&c. Your post gave me a bit more hope.

  • I'm so sorry! I too had the same thing happen 6 days post d&e. Unfortunately I was down at the shore and refused to go to a hospital that wasn't my own. I guess that was stupid to an extent. The discomfort lasted almost 12hours all in all, and then almost immediately the pain subsided. When I brought it to my OBs attention on Monday (2days before my post op appt) she told me it wasn't possible I passed as much as I was discribing. It was completely possible! I was there! I ended up with retained tissue that did eventually pass on it's own. I also don't understand why it is a "blind" procedure. That's slightly terrifying.
Sending you may T&Ps for comfort and healing!

  • Oh hun that sucks and is so scary. I hope the medicine helps. I had kind of a similar situation. After My d&c I wasn't allowed to leave until I peed. Well when I went to the bathroom a huge clot came out and I literally hit the panic button in the bathroom. The dr came and gave me a shot and a prescription. I "think" it was the same meds, I know it was every 8 hrs for 3 days. I had to set alarms in the middle of the night to take it. The meds did work though

This. The blind aspect of the D&C is maddening. That and docs have to balance 'thoroughness' with not causing damage.

I am so very sorry you are dealing with this.

I guess I never really thought about the fact that they do the procedure "blind". That is a pretty frustrating thought. I could see where this could be somewhat common in that case.

    My Ovulation Chart
  • Oh no - how scary! I had a d&c because of the amount of blood in my uterus. I hope this passes quickly. Take care of yourself. (((((Hugs)))))
    TTC: Since July 2013
    BFP #1: EDD 05/27/2014 (D&C 10/17/2014)
  • I just wanted to offer ((hugs)). I havent really experienced this exact situation but I can understand the frustration.
During my last loss, I tried to avoid another d&c by using cytotec. Well, I ended up taking several doses, multiple u/s to check for tissue, and I ended up needing a d&c anyway.
I just wanted it be over and to move on. Well, start or try to move on. It seemed like the longest loss ever, which was a constant reminder.
Sorry you're going through this :-(

    4 Losses (2003, 2008, Apr 2012, & Oct 2012)
All RPL and IF testing with multiple REs = normal

    5 IUIs = BFN

    All AL are welcome
