Cloth Diapering

a little extreme if you ask me

Colton came home with a note in his folder about costumes for Halloween (he's in prek). It states that students are not allowed to wear a costume unless it's a book character and the child must bring the book to show the person they are dressed as. My mom found Colton a captain America costume brand new at a yard sale for $7 and he's so excited. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it states that captain America comics came out in the 1940's. I texted her this and she hasn't responded. The relationship i have with his teacher is a close friendship. I was her prek assistant 3 years ago and i couldn't wait for him to be in her class. We speak daily and our kids play together. I've had no problems with her so far. Am i in the wrong? !

  • The letter also says students are strongly encouraged to not choose a tv character or movie character. There is also a costume contest and you'll be disqualified if you don't follow the rules. For 4 year olds? Seriously? ??

  • It just seems really unfair to a kid that if you pick whatever costume that's not a book, you're not allowed to wear it to school. It's great in theory if they gave several weeks notice and this was a reminder, but that's really stupid. I'm sure there will be several children feeling excluded this year.

  • She hasn't said NO to Captain America, has she? And personally I think a comic book character who has been around that long is totally legit, but I could see how that might be a gray area for some people. Plenty of pirates in books, though. Captain Hook, Long John Silver, etc

I tried to talk him into that but his was "i was already a pirate. Why can't i be captain America?" :(
And she hasn't said NO but she hasn't responded either

  • Is it the school setting the book character rule, or the teacher? It may not be up to her. :-/ But I agree that one week's notice is crummy.

  • I would not read anything into her non-response, and let him be CA.
  • I think it's a little much for 4 year olds.

Teacher. The whole daycare is allowed to wear whatever. It can't be too scary or involve weapons

  • Wow. I can't believe the short notice. I would be really upset. I hope your costume works out!

  • Uh... that's some BS. Seriously. Rosie's school asked for sugar pie pumpkins in our monthly newsletter. So, it was a good 3 weeks plus warning for their project. I think she's being a little unfair, more so if the whole school can be whatever except her class. Make another day be literary character day, not Halloween. Think of all the Elsa's she'll make cry.

  • I'm late to the party but I agree that it's unfair. It is not easy to explain to a four year old that they can't wear a costume that they already picked out and we're excited to wear! Not to mention the short notice to find something appropriate.

  • It's not for halloween, it's for school. Ours does the same. Only PreK is even allowed to dress up. The older kids have a theme for every day of this week if they chose to participate. They don't have to participate at all.
  • thats some bs. Could the guidelines be any more specific?

  • This makes me sad (and mad for you). I'm a bit of a Halloween nut (it's my b-day what can I say) and loved dressing up and the Halloween parties at school when I was a kid. There are so many schools that don't even allow it anymore. I jokingly told my coworkers that we were going to pick M's school based on if Halloween costumes were allowed or not.

I say let him be Captain America and maybe try to explain the contest part. And seriously a costume contest for 4 year olds sounds like a terrible idea.

  • I talked to the assistant director and she printed the Wikipedia page for me. She also said her grandson (in the same class) is going to be a ninja turtle and is bringing a book! I told her Colton would be bringing a book too. She thinks it's ridiculous about the contest. This morning Colton told me his teacher said if they dress as super heroes she will make them change into regular clothes. X(

That's just ridiculous. It's Pre-K people. The teacher is being dumb. Seriously. Don't send regular clothes and take away any he already has there so he can't change. If the director says its fine and the teacher makes them change I'd be pissed.

  • The assistant director told me to take the clothes too lol! The cook just came in my room was just hanging out and she said the teacher was in the kitchen having a meeting with the director of our daycare and the teacher looked really upset. It could be unrelated but who knows?

Omg stringy i was feeling a little guilty but i seriously am not sorry. She forces her own ideas on others. The cook was telling me when her son was in that class that the teacher told the class that eating meat was bad b/c we are killing baby animals. :-O

  • I worked with her when she decided to become a vegetarian. She wasn't that extreme. She didn't force it on anyone. That was 3 years ago. I think she has changed for the worse. I have a few other vegetarian friends and they would never do such a thing.

  • The making them change and disqualifying them thing (if anything, don't let them win, but still let them participate) isn't fair at all. Even if a parent was all "screw you, I do what I want" or just didn't give two shits about their kids school, you can't penalize the kid. They're freaking preschoolers for Pete's sake.

They receive points for quality of book, creativity, staying in character all day, etc. It blows my mind.

  • Dude. TMNT started out as a B&W comic book. And then a graphic novel, etc., etc. Even if you don't respect the genre, it qualifies as a book.

How in the world does she judge QUALITY of the book - and how would a preschooler know which one to choose based on this. Ugh. For little 4 year olds who are just learning the concepts and sometimes SO stuck on winning and losing and comparing themselves to others - this is getting me all worked up!

Me too! This teacher sounds out of control. She probably has a pinterest board of perfect book themed Halloween party ideas, that if the costumes don't adhere to she will make the kids change. I'm all for encouraging kids to love books, but Halloween (especially with less than 1 weeks notice) is not the right time for this. These kids are way too young for the type of contest she has planned, and I think it's just mean spirited to make a child change out of their Halloween costume because it doesn't follow her "theme" rules.
And again, all of this could have been avoided if she gave a few more weeks notice.

  • I thought a bunch of movies are made into books too. Andthat's one intense judging rubric. Especially for prek.... Which i'mguessing you'd be happy if they can just count...

I was a little peeved last month when she posted pics on their fb page of wHich kids could write their names and basically put a guilt trip on the parents whose kids aren't quite there yet.
