GTKY: What Do You Think Is Lame About Pregnancy/Maternity/Parenthood And All That Goes With It?

We haven't done a GTKY in a while (probably because we already know each other, but whatever).

I was laying in bed, thinking about how some of this crap is just...lame. Like, my mom wanted me to make diaper cake centerpieces for my shower. I just can't think that any of the diaper cake/baby/whatever things are cute. I told her I'm not doing anything other than decor and invitations for this shower (I'm a designer, I had to do the invitations/printed decor), to begin with, to please ask my friends to help her, since they keep begging me to tell them what to do, but also that I really think diaper anything for centerpieces are lame and a waste of time and money.

Diaper babies also look creepy.

However, I think I ended up accidentally compromising to making ONE diaper baby for the gift table, because she guilted me into it, since her friend bought me supplies for it (onesie, hat, socks, diapers). Fine. But no centerpieces.

What do you think is lame or feel ridiculous and uncool doing through this whole process and motherhood?

  • Hahaha!
I think it is lame that my back hurts so much I can't go to dinner or a movie with my husband. Staying home Fridays and Saturdays... Everyone keeps telling me to live it up now because when baby comes...
It is making me sad and feeling extra lame for sure!

I feel lucky that I've never seen a diaper baby. That sounds totally creepy.

I think traditional baby showers are lame, but I'm letting my friend through me one without giving her too many of my opinions, since I know it will make her happy if I do something "normal" with this pregnancy. Apparently going to 50 million doctors appointments and obsessively reading up on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, child rearing, etc. is not normal, in her opinion. Meanwhile, her other pregnant friend rarely goes to the doctor and continues to drink small amounts of beer on occasion. Apparently that's not "normal," either. I think it's lame that she has such strong attitudes about other people's pregnancies, but I also think that getting into a big discussion about this would be even lamer.

@MrsSarahRenee I feel lame when people ask me to go do things, and I just want to lay on the couch at home. I KNOW I should take advantage now, and I am still running most mornings (ok, only 2-3 miles), so they are like "but you are still running, you feel fine! Let's go for a 5-hour shopping trip an hour away!"

    Just do not want to.

I also feel lame for being mad when my husband has to go do things without me on the weekends (he's at his Grandma's laying floor tile now). He needs to help her. I can't go with him. I just want him home all weekend with me. Because I'm a brat.
@SPurp13‌ hahaha "because I am a brat" that's where I am at too!

  • Belly touchers are lame. My mom is the only one that doesn't and it pisses me off every time.

People feeling like just because I am pregnant means they should share all of the labor horror stories they have ever heard is lame.

    Hip pain is lame.

  • @ktizguerra I'm also sleeping mostly upright for at least half the night, then I switch to my sides. It's not so bad once you get a system going. I have two regular pillows and one memory foam one to prop me up, then another memory foam one under my legs, then a little one for my elbow. This sounds very complicated, but I'm used to it now. I also got a cheapo memory foam topper. That was probably not useful, since our mattress IS a memory foam, and it's brand new, but I was trying anything I could to stop the hip pain at night. If I just sleep the first half upright, then switch to my sides, my hips haven't bothered me as much.

  • @keelyd‌ I really hope your friendship recovers from this since it sounds like you are ultimately a bit hopeful of that too. Sounds like she just didn't know how to deal with the situation and probably still doesn't know how to handle the stress of her wedding. It sucks and is super unfortunate.

I find suggestions and especially lectures on what I should and shouldn't do during pregnancy based on old wives tales and "how we used to do it back in the day" extremely lame - especially given that this is my 4th round at pregnancy!
  • I find it super lame that I can't lift ANYTHING. We are currently moving and my husband just chewed my ass for moving a box that I normally would be able to move.  I hate feeling useless.

We just got done moving... Totally stinks to feel useless. But I hope the move goes smoothly for you!

This is gonna be me in a couple weeks when we move. It sucks that as I'm packing up boxes I have to wait for DH to come home and move it to my completed box area.
  • @spurp13 I've never been annoyed by onesies with words but I don't find them exceptionally adorable either. Maternity shirts though - I can't stand them! Not cute to me at all. Was the gift giver a friend or family? Can you put it on for a minute and take a picture for them?
  • Ugh, I hate sayings on onesies. I've refused to buy any of them. One of the worst I've seen...

    "I'm Cute
    Mom's Cute
    Dad's Lucky."

Really?! It seems a little vain...

Ok yea, those are stupid! I would never. All I could think of was stuff like "Mommy Loves Me" and similar which doesn't bother me so much.
  • We have lots of clothing with different phrases, most of them were gifts. My favorites say stuff like "I was born awesome".   A lot of the clothing we received are from carters so they all have sayings or animal faces on the butt.  People still buy us a ton of clothing so I just put up with it.

I think it is lame that because I am pregnant people suddenly want to talk to me every day and offer help (not real help, just say they want to help). But then the baby(ies) come they disappear.  Stop annoying me with a million questions!

  • I'm one of the guilty that gifts baby things with stupid sayings. I didn't realize how annoying it was until I got pregnant! I got my nephew a Halloween shirt that says don't scare me I poop easily. And then I bought him one that's says ladies love my chunky thighs...he's pretty fat so I thought it was funny at the time! So on behalf of those people I apologize! Haha I second that my giant boobs are getting more giant is over rated. Giant boobs aren't awesome. I'm just uncomfortable all the time. Also the 1 hour GD test, what's the point? I failed so now I have to do the 3 hour anyway. Yaaaay.

  • @caranichole It was my mom's best friend, who is like a second mother to me. I just keep ignoring her.

@ladybug0088 MY MOM BOUGHT THE BABY THAT SHIRT.

At least there is some sort of LOL factor in it, but it's still irritating. I actually hate the "Mommy's Little...." and "I love mommy" shit even worse for some reason.

@Mrsbabe614 I did shit like that before I was pregnant, too. I didn't know how irritating some of the things I did for other people's kids were. :\

@persephonerose The shit on the butt and ears on hats and little feet, I do think is adorable. Not the LAME sayings. The funny ones, I can get behind. Like, we have a Grumpy Cat onesie that says PUT ME DOWN. That's funny to me.

  • @Spurp13 We have some sleep n plays with the animal heads on the feet. When our son out grew them I would put my hand down in the foot and turn it into a sock puppet to entertain him. He thought I was so funny, or maybe he was laughing because I'm crazy? :D

  • @SPurp13 LOL That is too funny. I wouldn't side eye you as much if I knew that. I just think it's vain when people buy it for their own kid...as in calling yourself good looking and making it look like the baby said it. LOL

  • I have another one. I understand why it's necessary and important, but I find it really annoying to do so much blood/lab work during pregnancy. I absolutely hate it.

  • @persephonerose We don't really bed share but I do get creeped out sometimes when my toddler (in a toddler bed) crawls into my bed in the night and I didn't notice. And since we have no pets yet, I can't even imagine waking up and seeing an animal. lol

    Oops. Wrong thread.
  • @ladybug0088 I feel a little weird about it. Especially since this "mom" does not feel one iota cute at all. I do not know how I feel about my daughter wearing a onesie saying her mom is cute. :\

I will admit that I did purchase two onesies, one says I'm Told I Like Football and one says I'm Told I Like Running.

I'm a runner, and my husband loves football. Like, those are cute to me. The ones ANNOUNCING how PRECIOUS they are isn't. I got a hand-me-down that says "tickles make me smile." That's. Weird.

If it's cleaver, I like it. If it's dumb, I don't. *pounds gavel*

  • So many things...

    1. No drinking or in my case very little
    2. Feeling fat and unattractive in everything
    3. Being asked how the baby is doing every other day by the same people
    4. Being treated like I am sick because I am pregnant
    5. Being asked if I am feeling ok every day
    6. Wasting time and money in the hospital because I had a tragic pregnancy a year ago and my doctor feels like being SUPER careful

  • @victoria+james‌ ok seriously I'm glad I'm not the only one having an increasingly difficult time reaching my ass!

I'm doing baby laundry and organizing, and I came up with another one.

Am I the only one that thinks these onesies with the sayings are super dumb and lame? DADDY'S LITTLE DARLING. Oh, FFS.

But I have to gasp and pretend to think they are ADORABLE when I open them from people.

What's wrong with a polka dot? Or a print?

Don't get me started on the maternity shirt someone gave me that says "I'm making a human being, what did you do today?" Maternity shirts with sayings are even MORE lame, and that gift-giver keeps asking me to wear it. NO.
Or can we talk about the sheer volume of girl things that say "princess" on them? No. Just no. You are not the princess. Mommy and Daddy are way too poor.
"Princess" things are a pet peeve of mine. DH always likes to rub it in when we are out and he catches something with a tiara on it. LOL

@MorganWP Being short definitely makes this experience challenging. Feeling like an over-inflated balloon about to pop is pretty lame. And it's lame having short arms and legs to begin with and now not being able to reach even the few things I could before because my swollen midsection won't let me get close enough.

@keelyd I hope you have a fabulous shower!

As far as parenthood goes, I'm not looking forward to my kid being involved in any expensive team sports, especially if they're outdoors. I think paying a ridiculous amount of money to stand around in the heat and the bugs is lame.

  • I think it's pretty lame that I barely made it through a 2 hour movie tonight because the seats just made me so darn uncomfortable.  Pregnant lady needs to slouch! I didn't even have to pee (weird) but I felt like I couldn't take a deep breath.
