@lissydee I should have known not to argue with a nurse
you can argue with me all you want! I just like discussing such things because a) I am a research junkie by nature and also by trade as I have my Masters in Nursing, focusing on research and quality improvement and b) love all things birth and breast feeding related (I'll throw circ's here too because while I do have a strong opinion on it, I also have first hand knowledge since I actually assist in the procedure).
so eat that JMPrice! :P
I have learned so much today lol You both crack me up on here. Gotta love a good debate with true facts that aren't shoved down each others throats
Here's a link to an article reviewing a Mayo Clinic study that states that "Over their lifetime, half of uncircumcised males will contract an adverse medical condition caused by their foreskin, researchers say."
You can pick off one or two of the medical conditions with low occurrences, however all medical conditions aggregated statistically over a lifetime are a more accurate indicator of the benefits.
That's a news article... Those are just as biased as mommy blogs. Besides, why is it so important to you that everyone circumcised?! You just keep citing article after article. You aren't changing anyone's minds. We are all fully capable of doing our own research. You have mentioned that you don't care what others do yet you keep posting these links. It's getting pointless.

I really feel like it's no one's business what is in my kid's diaper. One of those things that, while everyone has an opinion, I feel like it shouldn't be judged.
No medical institution recommends circumcision. The US is #1 in doing it and there is no medical reason to do it. It isn't harder to keep clean. Didn't do it with my 1st soon and if this one ends up a boy also, we won't do it. My dh is, but we researched and he asked his father why he was and he had no other reason than because he was. Plus, it's unnecessary. Why put your son through that. Just my opinion.

Yes, yes, US is #1, as long as you ignore most of Africa and the Middle East. Obviously, your research has been so thorough, there is no reason for anyone to look at any other sources other than your opinion on this matter.
And while you are correct that AAP does not recommend universal circumcision, that does not mean that there is "no medical reason to do it". As stated on AAP's website, their opinion is "the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks". They go onto to say that the benefits aren't great enough to make a recommendation either way, so parents should choose themselves.
I have no problem with people making their own choices on the subject, but at least get your facts straight.
ETA: link to article where I got the circ prevalence map.

It should be noted that this is a topic the AAP flip-flops on rather frequently. The current recommendation of essentially "do whatever you want" came out 2 years ago (I remember because it changed towards the end of my pregnancy with DS.) Before that, they said they did not recommend circumcision. And before that, I believe they said they did recommend it (I didn't really pay attention to anything about circumcision until I was pregnant with DS).
The last line really sums it it, there's not enough of a medical reason either way, it's a "parental preference" not a "medical decision".

I heard the main reason for the last flip flop was a move to try to get more insurance companies to go back and cover it again. Not positive if that's true.
I really don't have strong feelings either way, I just don't appreciate people using misinformation to try to make others feel bad about a decision that is a parent's prerogative.
runningmamma's prevalence map is misleading. It depicts all circumcisions, infant, child, and adult. This thread is about infant circumcision. That map would be much different with only the U.S.A. and Israel colored in.

Right, because Canada and the UK don't circumcise either, at all, right? Ridiculous.

Second of all, looking at your history ALL you've commented on is circumcision threads. Thanks for playing!
