  • @MusicFanatic‌ I just asked my friend about OHIP. She has been in Canada for a year. She is not eligible for OHIP without citizenship and she is still going through that process. She has private coverage through her husband's employer (Canadian military).
There appears to be a law (more recent) that states someone who just puts in application for perm. residency and qualifies can get OHIP, but it still takes 3 months from the time I land there. I don't think I would be covered under my husband (he would work at a school)... I imagine military is quite different?
Is the school that your husband would work at a large school?  Like a university?  If so, they may be able to assist you with all of your questions.  Also, your husband may be able to work out some sort of health insurance coverage as part of his agreeing to come work for them?

    It's a high school.
And I'm not sure that's possible since the health care is government-based and no cost?  I'm not sure the school has say in that, since it works SO differently than the US.  But I can certainly call and ask questions.

You can get private insurance, but pregnancy is considered preexisting condition and they don't all cover it.. I'm trying to see if I can find one that would take me on, as that might be the best option for the gap.

  • (i've also contacted a midwife in the city we'd potentially live in to ask how it works if I have to pay out of pocket and what type of payment plan they would offer... and what insight they have for me, so we'll see what they say! Just waiting on call back).

Thanks for listening to me guys, it's helping to clear my mind!

  • @MusicFanatic‌ you could try calling Service Ontario with your OHIP questions. I googled "OHIP eligibility immigrants" and it took me to a page that had a phone number at the bottom.

My eyeballs are so itchy. Allergy meds aren't working. And the allergies are so bad they are messing with my sinuses, so my throat and ears hurt as well. I'm just an itchy miserable mess.

Try zatidor or generic ketotifen. Helps itchy eye and no pregnancy warning on the package :-)

  • I am really concerned about my feet getting bigger from pregnancy. I already have large feet and it's already difficult to find nice shoes that fit. If my feet get bigger I won't be able to find any shoes at all!

My feet went up a half size with each pregnancy unfortunately they don't go back :(

  • @sassquatch- no friends to ask, really.  All of the US friends have always been from here, none of the Canadian friends have ever lived in the US- two totally separate sides and friends, both of which have always lived in their same/own countries.  I've located some immigration boards that appear to be pretty active and busy, so have asked a few things there and I'm combing through all the posts. I've learned some things, but not everything.    I will definitely ask my in laws if they know anyone who can help us, though!

I thought of staying here for a bit, but I really would prefer not to.  I KNOW eventually we have to do spouse sponsorship and that can take a looooong time to get.  I'm researching temporary/vistor visas to see if that's what I need, but I dunno yet.  I'll get there.. it's just confusing as heck.   It would be nice if I could just pack up and legally live there because he's a citizen and bringing me- alas, not how it works.  HE can do so.  He can legally pack up, move there and work.  I just can't. Stupid immigration laws.

What I really need is a vodka. But.....lol.
Thanks for listening to me babble :x
@musicfanatic I'm a Canadian who moved to the US. I haven't read the whole thread yet, so I'm not sure exactly what questions you have, but feel free to ask. DH is a US citizen. I'm now a "legal permanent resident". It took a lot of time, money, paperwork, and traveling. I'm happy to answer as many questions as I can for you!

  • @Firefly3911- thank you soooo much!

I've read around on health coverage and see a midwife in the area that will work with you and do payment plans... but I don't want to be screwed if I end up high risk for some reason and need more care than typical or something.  I have read baby would automatically get covered as he/she would be born there.  It would just be me.  I believe it takes 3 months.  So actually, If we left say... August 10th, I would only not be covered until November 10th. So the birth would be covered, just not the 3 month span I'm waiting.  Not sure that's worth it?

My head aches and I've totally overtaken this whole thread. Sorry guys..lol.

I just copied and pasted what she sent in her FB response:

It's really easy for her since her husband is Canadian...all he has to do is file an application for permanent residency and prove that they're married (marriage certificate, photos, etc).

And she can come into the country any time. If he takes the job, all she has to do when she comes in is show her marriage certificate, and proof that she paid the fee for the permanent residency application, and they will give her what's called a "visitor record" so she can stay in the country for a year while her permanent visa is processing (it's fast...if she does outbound processing to Buffalo with her visa it usually takes 6 months or less). The only thing is she won't be able to work until her permanent residency comes in and if her husband's company doesn't provide private benefits she'll want to buy travel insurance since health care is socialized.

Me again: Ok so interesting tidbit is the Travel Insurance for health care - maybe that will help?
THANK you!  I've figured out how to get in the country lol.. I'm just still unsure of the health coverage.   I have no idea if his company provides private benefits, I'll have to contact them tomorrow.. or have H do so.  And I'll google travel insurance, because I know 0% of what that entails.   I will only need something for about 3 months. (providing I put in my app for perm residency stat).. I believe once I set foot there, I have a 3 month wait for the health care to kick in.   So I'll look around and google.   And call a few people tomorrow when my head is more here.

@LadyXaverian, I'm thinking of doing the opposite of what you did :) So I imagine the process is different..  and obviously health care is 1000% different between Canada and USA.  That's my main concern.  I just don't want to be NOT covered while pregnant.

Since this is a random thread...

Would any of you ever move to a different country for a good job offer your SO got?

(pretend in your scenario that your H is already a citizen of this country, btw).

I know, too hard to answer and 50 million cons and pros and open ended question.

    Sighhhhhh.
@MusicFanatic, DH and I lived in Thailand from 2009-2011, and it was amazing. I would absolutely be willing to move for a few years if it was a safe place and somewhere I wouldn't mind raising kids. GL with your decision!

ETA - I just read the Canada part. I would do it if the $30K increase is still an increase given the cost of living difference. I don't do so great in cold weather, but I could tolerate it for a few years.
  • SNIP!

@MusicFanatic Are you sure about this?
This sounds like it might be more involved than that. I would suggest calling the Infoline number at the bottom to be sure.

It sounds like you've done a lot of research already and contacted some good resources. Good luck with your decision! I am biased of course but I think Canada is awesome. :-)

Me, too- I already wear a size 12!
I'm 11 (in Canada where shoes are smaller). What are we going to doooo!!!?!

He and I were living in Texas for a few months. We were gonna stay for two years but after finding out we were expecting I actually made the choice to move to the Midwest where both our families are. I want his and my family to be able to come to the delivery and they wanna host the baby shower so yeah.

I miss TX but it will be there after baby is born. :)

  • Since this is a random thread, I'm going to have an AW moment: We had our second doctor visit today and he said everything is going excellent. After seeing the baby on u/s about 2 weeks ago, we heard its heartbeat again today via doppler. It was so exciting! Baby is measuring 3 days ahead of schedule, so the doctor changed my EDD to Jan. 27 from Jan. 30.

I am a little worried though because the doctor said my cervix is inflamed. He said it's ok and that my cervix is just naturally sensitive, but now after the pap I am spotting like crazy. Ugh, I know he said it's fine, but this amount of bleeding just totally freaks me out.
  • @MusicFanatic‌ congrats and good luck!

  • @MusicFanatic wow that's so exciting! Congrats!
  • @MusicFanatic‌ I'd do it! You shouldnt have trouble living there legally, seems working would be the big sticky issue. Is there a consulate your husband can confer with, or will employer assist with paperwork to relocate? It really shouldnt be all on you to sort it out online... :-) Good luck!

  • We've gotten help we needed! I've already filled out some paperwork and got the ball rolling. I definitely cannot work for a bit, but I knew that. I have the medical stuff sorted out, though, and have been in contact with a midwife there :) as soon as that was clenched, I told H to go for it. Scary as heck, but I'm excited!

  • Dragging this up to say my husband accepted the job :) Yikessssssss.
Congrats!! Good luck on your move and settling in. Buy warm clothes now as they'll be cheaper. (I'm a wussy in the cold.)  <:-P
I am, too.  I'm from Hawaii. And I complain about the cold in NY. I can online imagine the cold in Canada :/

  • @MusicFanatic I totally would. I love to travel and I would love to live in another country and have the chance at experiencing another culture. My only thing is I would want to at least finish nursing school first.

  • @12ChaChaCha my feet were bigger during pregnancy but have since gone back to normal.

  • I find that I'm doing well as a pregnant person. However, if I say anything negative at work or on Facebook people the wrong ass idea!!!! It makes me so angry. .its like ... I can't complain or say anything . But if I don't say anything I feel like I give them the wrong idea too.... I just want to jump up and down for joy and complain about it... is that so wrong?
  • My doctor put me on a new medicine for nausea, thank God. But my insurance said they wouldn't cover it and then decided I should try something else which causes birth defects.. You work as an insurance company not a doctor... Irritated.
  • I am dealing with the SAME issue right now!!! I deserve a bed I am comfy in!
